This is a bit surprising.I remember finding it odd for a Cali girl to commit to Iowa. Perhaps she got caught up in the Caitlin Clark frenzy during her recruitment.
yeah. I had the 15 days in my head and forgot that's just an administrative deadline, not a deadline for actual lists, etc.The 15 days is just the timeframe a player can enter their name into the portal. Players can continue to take visits for longer and then make a decision.
She made the all-freshman team for the BIG10. She definitely held her own and earned recognition for it.This is a bit surprising.
Deal quoted as saying she became intriqued with Iowa and packed home court already during Gustafson era.
Last year buzz was that Deal, #9 frosh recruit, would step right in at the Clark/Olson spot on the way to 4 yrs of starting at Iowa. (Think Chavez, Galvan, Davidson)
Instead she was good, but played behind Chit Chat, Stremlow, McCabe and Feuerbach.
For 26/27 she was in line to step up as a starter.
Will be interesting to see this play out. Sure, UCLA is an option.
I'm including this article because my initial thought was she would go back home (left coast schools!). However, this piece -- which I think was based on local (Iowa) reporting -- states that Deal's parents moved from Cali not just to watch Addy play at Iowa, but her older brother, who has one more year at Grinnell, home of the DIII program that shoots, shoots, shoots. This is a bit surprising.

Would you like to see her at ND Dillon?I'm including this article because my initial thought was she would go back home (left coast schools!). So, she may not necessarily be headed back to California ... We'll see. I was a bit surprised because it looked like she'd either start or be in position to start next year.

Iowa women's basketball guard Addie Deal entering transfer portal
Former 5-star prospect Addie Deal is entering the transfer portal after just one year with the Hawkeyes.sports.yahoo.com
I'm not really sure, Charlie. To be honest, I stopped watching tape of her in HS because she committed so early to Iowa.Would you like to see her at ND Dillon?
Thanks for the straight-forward report. Are most starters back?Oregon so far losing 3 players to portal in addition to 3 graduates. Of the transfers out G Elisa Mevius started 3 games but then missed the rest of the season with injury. G/F Sammy Wagner spent most her career on the bench with injuries. F Sara Rambus was a starter then a primary rotation player at 6’3”. Surprise there.
Nine returnees at this point all 6’1’ or shorter. Unworkable even with 6’4” Emilia Krstevski coming in. Graves needs some serious portal shopping for front line bodies.
You can’t say much until the portal closes. But at this point 4 starters plus two rotation players are back. Losing #2 scorer MIA Jacobs to graduation. Thanks for the straight-forward report. Are most starters back?

I think Deal leaving Iowa isn’t that surprising given how her season went. She had some good games but was largely unplayable a lot because of defense and turnovers. She didn’t seem to ever be able to fully find her footing . . .

That's a yikes of a retween by Barrett. Pretty direct attack on an 18/19 year old kid.Respectfully disagree with the majority sentiment expressed above. IMO, it is highly unlikely that Deal was in line to start next year, and that she was told that in no-uncertain terms by the Iowa coaching staff. GoCardinal has it right. No surprise that Deal is leaving after a disappointing season. A guard lineup of Chit Chat, Stremlow and Deal would be short, slow, and slow with bad handles. Apparently the Iowa coaching staff was not surprised by Deal's announcement. Iowa assistant coach LaSondra Barrett chose yesterday to retweet the following: "Some ppl apparently think you deserve playing time based on your rating, rather than how you actually play. Interesting concept."
As far as Deal making the coaches' All-Freshman team (but not the media), hard to explain. Deal was one of four BIG McDonald's AA Freshman (Davidson, Betts, McGaughy & Deal). Still, Iowa had a deserving frosh, but her name is Journey Houston, not Addie Deal:

FWIW, I am guessing the "some people" was more in reference to Deal's parents than her. From reading around on Reddit, my sense is that her family has strong views about what she's entitled too and has had a heavy hand in her entire career, including holding her back a year such that she's a 20-year-old sophomore. She probably benefited from the extra year going up the ranks in HS but in college that's not the advantage it once was and her limitations are definitely becoming more apparent. That's a yikes of a retween by Barrett. Pretty direct attack on an 18/19 year old kid.
Also a bit ironic that an LSU alum is now coaching at Iowa after the last few seasons.
I remember that Deniya Prawl from Tennessee had interest in ND.........I really liked her game in high school and was surprised that she got limited minutes this season..........she may be more of a wing than a guard.........from the looks of the portal, you'll have plenty to choose from.....I'm not really sure, Charlie. To be honest, I stopped watching tape of her in HS because she committed so early to Iowa.
When I saw her play for Iowa, she had a few O-fers but did well in otherwise short stints. However, what I did come away with is she's a shooting guard and the Irish have a very good one coming from that state in Jenica Lewis, who is a three-time state champion and can drive and shoot three's. Don't want to recruit over her.
What ND needs in the portal is another "Vanessa de Jesus" type of combo guard that can spell Hannah Hidalgo in bringing the ball up from time to time to "rest" HH (as if she ever really does). That could be a grad transfer type, but a Kayleigh Heckel kind of game.
Ivey still likes to keep her roster tight, so we'll see where she goes with all this.
One minor clarification. She will be a 21-year old Sophomore, as of early September. Juju Watkins will be 21 in July.FWIW, I am guessing the "some people" was more in reference to Deal's parents than her. I think Deal leaving Iowa isn’t that surprising given how her season went. She had some good games but was largely unplayable a lot because of defense and turnovers. She didn’t seem to ever be able to fully find her footing, and I’m pretty sure Iowa has another highly touted California recruit coming in next season anyway.
And, as I read in an article I just posted here, her parents have gone far away: in fact, they moved to Iowa to be near Deal and her brother, who plays at Grinnell.FWIW, I am guessing the "some people" was more in reference to Deal's parents than her. I do remember that do-se-do, my friend. Seems like Ms. Wagner might be running into a case of musical chairs, if she doesn't watch it.Ah, Sammy Wagner from San Antonio. Early verbal commitment to Baylor. Then de-commits and commits to Texas. Then de-commits from Texas and signs with Oregon. Who could have predicted she wouldn't finish her career at Oregon? 🤣
It was strange to me that Deal thanked the staff in her transfer announcement but didn't thank her teammates. It may not be anything but it made me wonder what her relationship was like with teammates.I'm including this article because my initial thought was she would go back home (left coast schools!). Sammy Wagner was plagued by injuries during her three years as a Duck. Never developed into a regular but very positive on the bench #1 cheerleader in fact. She was successful in student government and graduated in three years. I am sure that along with Mevius the coaches gave her a nudge.I do remember that do-se-do, my friend.
