This isn’t a shocker, but they’re already down Karlie. Absent any more injuries they can live without a frontcourt player, but they sure could use another guard.

Does waiving Pili free up some cap space? Honest question, I have no idea how that might work.

Yes. After 5pm EST tomorrow all contracts are guaranteed for the rest of the season (though they're offloaded if another team picks them up). Sure, she's on a rookie contract so it's not more than $80k, but I'm guessing they may want some room to sign a shooting guard since they don't have the most robust bench behind McBride with Samuelson out.

No it's not. Timing sucks considering it was after the game but that's the business side of this sport.
 
Great game by Chicago. Looks like Angel and Kamilla are finally figuring out how to play together as well as trusting the coaching staff. Of course, my beloved Minnesota Lynx did not help themselves any by coming out flat and letting Chicago dominate in that first half. Hats off to Angel, Kamilla, and Ariel. Angel is putting together quite a run of games lately. Her last 10 games have been incredible. Well, 9 out 10 games have been incredible. She did have a 9/2 game back against Phoenix. Everyone is allowed to have a game like that once in awhile.

When you look into Angel Reese's advanced stats, it's clear she has gotten better (as have the Sky) as the season has gone on.

First impressions were rough: In 6 games in May, she averaged 10ppg on just 31% FG.
But in June, in 10 games, she averaged nearly 14ppg, while shooting 46% FG.
And in just 4 games in July, she's averaging 18ppg while shooting 53% FG.

The other big difference between last year and this year is that they are putting her in a lot more playmaking opportunities. Her assists have soared (3.8apg in 2025 vs 1.9apg in 2024), though so have her turnovers. Still, she's making plays for others.

All this being said, the reason Reese will always be a significant figure in the WNBA is she is likely the best rebounder the league has ever seen (And it has nothing to do with "Me-bounds." You take out all her offensive rebounds (which are not all her own missed shots anyway), and she still is averaging the 3rd most rebounds per game in the league.) Even with the shooting woes early in the season, she averaged more that 12rpg each month of the season thus far.

I was in a little state of shock when I saw the news. Just the downside of the WNBA and I hate it. But on the flip side, the WNBA does that crazy window where a player can get picked up by a team again, so hopefully that happens. Then there is always the beauty of expansion coming up as well. I just hate that so many talented players sit on these benches, get cut, get limited minutes, and then they waste away their talents here in the states but go overseas and dominate. It is a struggle. The whole WNBA journey (in terms of their contracts) just reminds me so much of the ABA and the struggles of the NBA up until the late 70s and early 80s. Both the ABA and NBA had some really interesting contracts in the early days.
 
Indy-Dallas is off to a good start, entertaining game, both teams shooting really well, pretty much all the stars are showing out.

Nurse's career has stalled since her ACL injury while she was with the Mercury. She hasn't remained with a team for more than a season since coming back from the injury. For what she's being paid, more is expected of her, which is why I think the author listed her. As to whether it happens, I think it's unlikely, but who knows?
 
Fever turning it into a track meet in Q2, getting a bunch of transition buckets.

VERY entertaining first quarter in Indianapolis. Really enjoy Rebecca and Ryan. Lobo's analysis of the CC assist to Boston over McCowen illustrates why she is one of my favorite sports analysts.
 
WOW!!! Poor Paige. This is, well . . . embarrassing. . . . I wonder if the paper bags will come out?
 
Yueru is playing decent on offense, but Howard is sprinting down court and blowing past her, getting layups on the other end constantly. McCowan is too slow too. Absolute clinic by Indiana in Q2 as they have blown this wide open from what was a 1 point lead after 1 quarter.

36 in the quarter and 64 in the half for the Fever. 3 in double figures already and 2 more 1 point away.

Never in one million years did I think a player would take the title of "never improved at all since college" from Brianna Turner......but Tierra McCowan just might grab the award. She is absolutely abysmal in all facets of the game. She can't score, defense, rebound, pass, nothing. The fact that she's Dallas' 2nd highest paid player is atrocious.
 
Clark's passing is amazing. It was on full display all throughout this game. 13 assists/2 TOs. That's pretty good, right? Also threw in 5 steals just for fun.

20 for Mitchell, 18 for Howard, 17 for Boston, 14 for Clark, 13 for Cunningham.

Bueckers and Yueru were good for Dallas but not nearly enough help. Quinerly and James were decent. Brutal game for Ogunbowale, first game back after an injury. 0-10 shooting.
 
So. . . . I know there are a number of Brondello skeptics on the board .. . . but

Winning on the road is hard - the Dream explode to a first half HUGE lead . . . again.

And, again . . . the Liberty respond. The in game reporting on the Liberty prep for the game focused on Brondello's focus on defense.

Now, there are those that hold the view the defense does not win championships, but defense and coaching certainly won this game.

While the million dollar coach seems to be the flavor of the day, like a fine wine Sandy Brondello, winner of championships as a player and coach seems to just keep on leading her teams to elite levels.
 
Atlanta jumped all over NY early, but Lib surged ahead after Q1 for 79-72 win. Fiebich w/ an outstanding 21 pts on 8-9 shooting. Ionescu continues to be mired in a shooting slump, 3-20. 18 pts for Stewie. Gray has been excellent this year but she's hit a slump recently too, including today.

Well the Lib and the Merc have the same record, and NY has the most talented roster in the league, so... :rolleyes:

She's been frustrated by the additional attention defensively and isn't happy she's not getting calls with respect to fouls from what I've observed. The defensive scheme against Gray today was well executed. Fiebeich (sic?) defended her very well today. If Howard is out for an extended period of time, she's going to be the focal point of any defensive gameplan and better get ready for it.

She's not alone. Been quite a few players and coaches sounding off about that this year. Commish just keeps doing absolutely nothing.

WRT Atlanta, they went to the line WAY more than the Lib. If they’d shot 80% rather than 60% they win the game. Don’t blame the officials for missing your free throws.

Both the flavor of the month and championship coach have dealt with similar roster challenges with injuries to both squads and Leone in Europe.

Both have had tough losses - the Liberty have lost twice to the Merc, the Merc held Dallas to 98 in a really ugly loss.

While both have identical records this year, career records are much different

Sandy 257-170, 2 championships, one coach of the year, 6th winningest coach in W history

The west coast games ending today's wonderful schedule are a study in contrast.

In SoCal both coaches are running the Dallas "defense" although not with the same lethargy as the Wing, demonstrating the need to completely disregard D in the Wing scheme.

And in coffeeland hard to tell if it is defense or a real incompetence offensively that leaves one looking for scoring.

Jackson is loving the Sun version of Dallas D - as the Sun are making both Rikki and Stevens look all world. At the time out Stevens comes off the court with a HUGE grin, and lets face it who wouldn't.

I've been reflecting on Clark's tact during her pre fourth quarter interview with Holly. Rowe indicated the half time score *(and continued 3rd quarter scoring before asking "What is the source of the team offensive success?" Clark smiled (I mean, who wouldn't) and said we are all moving well - while thinking "Holly, its Dallas."

Definitely some, but outside of Collier nobody I would call a superstar. We don't agree sometimes, but can you find it in your heart to entertain the possibility that Reeve gets more out of her team than Brondello does? Give Sandy more talent than everybody else, and she MIGHT win a Championship, but it's far from a guarantee. Given a choice between those 2 coaches, I'd take Reeve 1000/1000.

Back to your favorite coach, there is no sense in comparing somebody halfway thru his second season w/ a coach who is in her 12th year. Of course career wins and stuff like that are going to tilt in Sandy's favor.
