2025 WNBA Regular Season

Some musings from yesterday. I like Clark a lot but I think she flopped a bit on the contact from Mabrey which kinda escalated things. I know you can say Mabrey escalated things and you wouldn't be wrong but idk. I think about this a lot, when superstars flop during confrontations it's actually a bad thing for their team because their teammates now have the pressure of sticking up for their stars and things get more out of hand. I know it's not scripted but things getting out of control is so predictable when this occurs its like a script they follow. Lol. It was almost compulsory that Sophie does something like the thing she did at the end. I didn't like Caitlin in the press conference after the game, getting frustrated and saying let's just talk about basketball. I get it and trust me I prefer talking hoops over drama. I also get the idea of what happens on the court stays on the court. Like it's not that deep. I'm sure she doesn't hate Sheldon or Marina. But she was doing all the wwe stuff, hyping up the crowd, talking crazy. I don't mind that part and love her intensity, but then u can't be frustrated ppl will ask about that.
Idk if it's roster expansion that's needed, or it's because these players that are signing the hard ship contracts I'm so emotionally invested in. But it's crazy to turn on a game and see Grace Berger getting some quality minutes, then Mackenzie Holmes subbing in on the opposite squad. I saw Haley Jones on the bench in Dallas. I'm like I thought all 3 were cut, and was bummed. It was good to see them but I also know they can be let go rather quickly. I also think Grace is better than how she played last night. Part of my point is I do think it's hard to throw players in these situations. The even crazier thing is the hardship player will play more at times than players that made the roster, perhaps cuz they play a different position.
I thought Paige looked good last night. She would've had like 25 if the rims were slightly friendlier and she didn't smoke a layup late. But in terms of creating her shot, she looks really good. Like she was so efficient in college and used dhos so well, but I think she's just creating space at a different level which is cool to see. I think their offense is still not great. And I actually think they need a point guard. I feel like Arike and Paige playing ur turn my turn, ur side initiates the offense when I randomly don't feel like it, limits offensive cohesion. I know the w doesn't work this way but put Haley at point guard or at least bring the ball up and also defend wings. They could really have used Carla Leite if we're being honest.

I think this video pretty much sums up the situation for those that didn't witness it:

The trolls will be coming out of the woodwork after this game. Marina Mabrey will be public enemy #1 after she shoved Clark to the ground and somehow didn't get ejected. Later in the game Sophie Cunningham exacted the revenge on Jacy Sheldon with like 40 seconds left in the game and they both got ejected along with Lindsay Allen. This was a really heated game with a lot of skirmishes. Technical fouls and flagrant fouls were being tossed out like candy in the second half.

Marina shoved Clark because Clark shoved Sheldon.

Clark went down awfully easy on that shove. I would agree probably that Marina didn’t deserve to be ejected there; I don’t think that rises to the level of an ejection.

And I like Clark. And I think she has goat potential. And will be the best player in the league soon. But I also think she has one of the worst attitudes I have ever seen on a basketball court.

We can go round and round on this and I'd rather not get into the blame game (Marina bodied Clark because Clark shoved Sheldon...Clark shoved Sheldon because Sheldon poked her in the eye and then walked into Clark's personal space talking smack after the play was dead...and on and on and on). In the end all involved players were at fault. Players need to be held accountable as well as the refs. Everyone is responsible for moderating their attitudes and refs need to be more aggressive in tampering down on this type of aggression. Clark and Sheldon should have been given technical fouls much earlier in the game.

Agreed wholeheartedly.

1). I agree with you here as these questions get asked of others when it happens. It's a fair question to ask.

2). Jones struggled with PG duties while in Atlanta, so I'm not sure if she's the best fit for that role. Also, as she just joined the team, it could be a situation that Dallas wants her more up to speed before having her more involved?

I am still stunned Mabrey was not ejected. She was not involved in the play, but she came over to shove Clark to the floor.
In a previous post I noted I don't think she could have been because it happened during a dead ball situation.

Was what she did enough to be considered a flagrant 2? That's the only scenario that would have had her ejected immediately. If anything she would have received a technical.

As no one was assessed a technical earlier when the first shoving situation happened, it wouldn't have been enough for an ejection at that point as two technicals are required for an ejection.

I'm still of the opinion that had the referees done their job in the first half, a lot of this mess could have been avoided.

Nope. Players can be ejected at any point (even after the game). Live ball, dead ball has nothing to do with it.

The first push by Mabrey was after Clark had pushed Sheldon in the chest.

During the first half when it started getting chippy, Antonelli said she was glad the officials didn't call any T's. I've been thinking that if they had at least issued warnings after Sheldon/Mabrey/Clark first got into it and whistled the first extra-curricular activity after that, they might have been able to avoid this.
Many years ago in the NBA Mendy Rudolph would always take control of a game early if they got too physical. One quick warning then a technical . Players got his point very fast, and they always got back to playing basketball.

Correct.
Official Ashley Gloss said in the pool report after the game that the contact made by Mabrey did not rise to the level of ejection or meet the criteria for a flagrant 2.

Speaking of the good ol’ days — did the play by Cunningham on Sheldon toward the end of the game give anyone flashbacks of (IIRC) McHale clotheslining Rambis in the Celts-Lakers series many years ago?

Correct.

Thanks for posting it. At least I was partially correct per the referee's perspective. The foul has been upgraded since last night.

I was impressed with Minnesota yesterday. Phee did not have her all-star, League MVP type game yesterday against Las Vegas but other Lynx players stepped up and played well. Courtney Williams and her mid-range game is lethal! Diamond Miller had her best game as member of the Lynx. She looked amazing out there. I think Diamond needed a game like this for her confidence. Alanna Smith looked great as well. Way to go, Minnesota!! As for Las Vegas. Wow.

By what standard? The number of times I see posts like this on the board, it makes me shake my head.

The same was being said about Hillmon when she was drafted by the Dream. Some thought Amihere being drafted in 2023 was a sign she was going to get cut. Who's still in Atlanta?

If she does get waived, it doesn't mean she's not fit for the W. It may be a situation that Connecticut wasn't the right fit for her. Bridget Carleton is a great example of that as she was a 2nd round pick who got waived and is now a key cog in Minnesota. That took time as well as she had to work her tail off to earn her starter's role.
Anyone who has eyes can see she is outmatched and unprepared.

Her skillset is not good enough in this league. She is 6 foot, so not good enough to play the 4. She isn’t a 3 either because she has zero ball handling skills and her perimeter game and defense declined significantly since she left DePaul for LSU. If she wanted to better herself she was better off going to USC or SC.

She’ll be out the league within couple years

Apparently sales for Sophie Cunningham jerseys are blowing up after last night's action.
Sigh. Had a feeling that would happen based on how the fans celebrated her when she fouled Sheldon. For as much as we read and hear complaints about the game being too physical, the fan reaction at the game seems to indicate otherwise.
