2025 WNBA Regular Season

Thinking/typing out loud:

Last year, Erica Wheeler -- who had been signed the year before Clark arrived to be the point guard -- was a very expensive, underused back-up PG. Now she's a not as highly paid back-up PG to Skylar Diggins out in Seattle.

Sydney Colson is the ostensible back-up but don't see her being the full-time floor general. As noted, by making Kelsey Mitchell the PG, do you also cut down on her ability to be a scorer? While Cunningham and Hull move the ball when needed, don't really think of them as shooting guards/wings that can take over a half-court offense, as a Marina Mabrey has done.

The old Indy regime might've brought Grace Berger back for a series of hardship contracts but this is a new group of administrators, coaches and players.

If CC is really only going to be out four games, maybe some combination of all of those will get through, but if it lasts longer, maybe there's someone out there....I'm still in lacrosse mode after watching Cornell win the NC in guys lacrosse, so my WNBA files aren't quite functioning yet. ;)

I'd guess they move Mitchell to PG with Colson getting back up minutes and bring Hull into the starting 5. Cunningham too if Bonner can't figure things out.

Hull started last game. Bonner played mostly at the 4 rather than the 3. So maybe move Cunningham into the starting lineup while Clark is out.

I just don’t think Mitchell has it to be point. Fast? Yes, but hasn’t shown me the court vision to be point. She needs to be the primary shooter.

Hull’s not a natural but I think she can suffice for two weeks
Maybe she can pull a Freaky Friday with her twin Lacie, who ran point quite a bit for us over her four years in Cardinal red. I can't say I recall Lexie ever playing point, but that's mostly because of the two Lacie was always the more obvious choice.

Great post....I was trying to remember Lexie's sis's name.

What is she up to?

The Fever will be okay with Kelsey running the point for a few games. Like someone posted earlier, they could move Sophie into the starting rotation and have Sydney get minutes at the point. I remember watching some Laker games of the Jerry West days. Folks forget that Jerry West was not a true point guard on that Laker team. Him and Gail Goodrich were both "shooting guards" and they made things work for a couple of seasons. Kelsey is a scoring guard but in high school and college, she played point guard. She will be okay running the point.

I'm not sold, especially when facing the Mystics with players who are good at picking pockets like Citron, Sykes and Edwards. Court vision and speed is important but so is being able to protect the ball. That's why I'm skeptical.

I missed this the other day. Plum had a blow by drive and score against Reese, then did the "too small" gesture as she headed back down to the other end of the court.

I don't really condone that kind of behavior...but that's kinda funny.

Last I heard, she was working for Tesla in Austin. A very Stanford type of gig to land out of undergrad! (IIRC, she was a product design major with like a 3.99 GPA. Both she and Lexie were borderline 4.0 students their whole careers at Stanford, which is insane because they had hard, STEM majors, and, uh won a national championship at the same time.)

I don’t think it’s even a question of condoning. Angel’s taunting in college was shameful. The after echoes will haunt her for a while, especially since she hasn’t outgrown it even now. But maybe Kelsey’s giving her a way out, turning it into something more good-humored and even friendly. Turn it into a joke and they can all laugh about it together.

I love it. It's sports, not tea time. For whatever reason there is a double standard between men and women's sports. Men are allowed to taunt but women must be prim/proper/graceful/elegant. If you want that, watch ballet. Games are so much more fun when players get emotional and rib each other. I love that kind of drama. The refs will ensure it doesn't go too far.

Actually, men who taunt opponents are regularly held accountable as well. Most men’s sports have anti-taunting rules.

Personally, I find all such behavior unpleasant to watch. As some famous person or other advised football players on after-score celebrations: “try to act as though you’ve been there before.”

Are they though? While there are rules, how they are applied is a different matter. For example, Haliburton's imitation of Reggie Miller's choke sign hasn't gotten much push back from what I've been able to see.

True, and neither have the anti-taunting rules in WCBB or the WNBA been enforced very assiduously. But fan disapproval, which is what we’re talking about here, is a different story. It may not appear in on field penalties in the nfl or in salary but it definitely shows up in endorsement deals which is a closer measurement of fan judgments. I imagine it’s a similar story in the MNBA.

Well, there’s no double standard on my part. I hate it if it men or women. It’s a big part of why I don’t watch the NBA anymore.

@JellyBean, I'm only going by what we've seen so far from Minnesota. Do I expect them to join the elite tier? Yes--probably as soon as tonight against Seattle with KMac returning. But, so far, it's been tough sledding. If the schedule was a little tougher, they may be 2-2 right now.

Actually, my high school coach was more specific: "Act like you've been there before."
Message learned. I'll do an occasional, but mild fist bump if the move/basket meant something big, but that's as far as it goes.
Most of the time, run back up court.

If endorsement deals was based on opposing fan disapproval, half or most of the players wouldn't have endorsement deals.

Are you sure about that? Sometimes that works to the athletes advantage when it comes to marketability.
