2025 WCBB Coaches Hot Seat edition (merged)

Illinois hired Shauna Green and got better. What about that is something that Illinois did that Wisconsin wouldn’t do? Not following your crumbs and innuendo, but perhaps it’s just me.

I wasn't saying this like it was a BTS take or anything.
They hadn't been to a tournament in 20+ years, hired Green, gave her a respectable contract along with resources/NIL and she rewarded them taking Illinois to a tournament in all 3 years she's been there.

I'll give you resources as a possibility, but their past coaching hires, while they didn't necessarily work out, were not bad hires in the abstract. Given that they were not bad hires, the "contract" isn't really material.

After the "ok" Grentz years, they hired Law. She was the #1 assistant at Rutgers for CVS and a top head coach prospect. She didn't work out, but is a pretty decent assistant, currently been with Dawn in her native SC for quite a while. Matt Bollant was very successful at Green Bay (NCAA sweet 16 one year) and again was a great Power Conference prospect. For whatever reason(s) he didn't work out at Illinois nor his next stint in the Ohio Valley Conference and is back at an NAIA school where he started. Nancy Fahey didn't work out, but had a 30 year career in DIII and is a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. The only significant thing about Green was that she was already a head coach in DI (as was Bollant) and she was another much sought after coach for a power conference.

Hiring a head coach is ultimately a bit of a crap shoot, plus measured against varying standards. It is difficult to see that Illinois' hires prior to Green were totally misguided - each had a potential for failing which played out, but they certainly had prospects of success as well.

Not a bad choice, really. She was always an "ok" coach, just not going to lead to the promised land. I would expect to see them in the NCAA's again, but not expecting they will contend for a title. Time will tell.

I kind of liked Kelly on ESPN/SECN as an analyst, but I won't necessarily miss her. Probably liked her more than Nikki Vargas who I guess will still be around . . . :p

I’m happy for Harper as she seems like a perfectly nice person and had a somewhat embarrassing exit cause from Tennessee despite meeting expectations for most programs…but, if she couldn’t get it done at Tennessee I’m not seeing how she’ll do it at Missouri. Yes, the standard for success will be lower, but she also won’t have the same name brand or resources, and the SEC is more competitive than ever.

To me, this hire suggests that Missouri is content with being somewhere between mediocre to decent in WBB.

I personally think Mizzou and Kellie are a perfect match for each other. The state of Missouri typically has at least one or two nationally ranked players each year, if she can re-establish that base that’s already a win because Mizzou has lost out on their own talent because of poor results the last few seasons.

The portal can also change some things rather quickly. I think she’ll be fine.

And what would make you think she could?
Name me any top HS frosh she got to either NCSt or Tenn? I think her highest recruit was the kid who transferred after one year to Vandy.

Every school and every circumstance is different. Girls in the Midwest typically stay in that general region to play, with many opting to play in their respective home states. She previously spent several years coaching and building relationships in Missouri. She’s already familiar.

I think most Tennessee fans will tell you the university was not giving her adequate NIL support. From what I heard, the Lady Vols received nothing from one of Tennessee’s collective. The women’s sports had to share money that came in from other pools. Nonetheless, she still managed to do really well with the portal. I think she’ll do just fine, especially if she can convince Judd and Slaughter to stay.

That was Justine Pissot, the Jersey girl who went there, in part, because her dad was a legacy.

My fellow ND alum, Beth (Morgan) Cunningham, was allegedly was in contact with Missouri brass, but Mizzou brass obviously went with the -- no offense intended -- the glitzier hire. Cunningham will probably stay at Missouri State, where she's had three 20+ win seasons.

Who knows? She might've dodged a bullet --- I'm not sure the will is there from Tiger administration to push the Tigers up the mountain. Cunningham might be better off waiting for Uncle Joe to finally retire/leave at Northwestern so she can take a program that is/will be completely at rock bottom.

Yes, lack of NIL was a huge factor at Tenn during Kelly's tenure. Now she is replacing a coach that wasn't getting much NIL and will probably get a good amount to work with

Great move for Missouri. They hired a talented and a coach with a name. The SEC is loaded with brand coaches. Reminds me of the old Big Men’s ball. You can say on the women’s side as well with Paretta, Stringer, Auriemma, Muffet, Walz, Bruno.

Got it....I'll throw in that "East" for you. ;)

I was able to verify this an hour ago (not that i doubt it or anything)
but i'll add 2 more to this as well:
Aaron Roussell- Richmond
and a surprising name- Johnnie Harris
I thought the GCU coach had her pick of Mizzou, Ark, ASU?

MO is filled.
She's not listed here for Ark.
ASU?

Or do we say,
Molly, you in danger girl
