I find Fulwiley oddly likable. I say oddly because normally I do not care for flashy players, But, with her, while she has flashy skills, she doesn't jump around and scream and holler like she discovered the cure for the double dribble every time she makes a play. Seems like a sweet kid.Yeah, most Gamecock fans are just ready to move on too. In this merry-go-round of the transfer portal year I just want to see the final roster. I don’t even care who lands where as long as we keep what we‘ve got right now.
Come on Dillon........she's got one year of eligibility left..........why not go to UConn where she'll get great coaching and a pretty good chance of winning an NC!!!One of the teams she might fit in with is Notre Dame: not just because she went to Mount Notre Dame HS in the Cincy region, but also because she played with one KK Bransford (and that team won a couple of Ohio State championships), who is currently on the Irish. Their games complement each other and gosh knows she'd get PT.
She’s not really vocal but I can’t really get on board with her playstyle because I don’t really feel like she plays particularly team-minded basketball. Every time she has the ball it’s like she’s thinking of a potential highlight reel rather than doing the fundamentally sound thing. I can see why Staley kept her on a leash and I think she would drive Geno insane.I find Fulwiley oddly likable. Same. It genuinely feels like she can't help herself but go for the high risk, higher reward plays. (Haley Jones from Stanford was also like this, in a very different and yet similar way, and I also always appreciated it.)I find Fulwiley oddly likable. Emoji's are left to be interpreted. The big grin tells me nothing except it's funny to you. The big grin doesn't say sarcasm. I don't have time to backtrack and get the full picture of the statements, so I take it on face value. I get it now.....so end of story.I guess you chose to overlook the big grinning teeth emoji at the end of my statement to indicate it was intended to be humorous.
or they have already made a deal at their new place of employment........I mean education.......Nowadays I laugh when someone says a player has a "do not contact" tag like it means something. Players don't want to be directly contacted and are just signaling to be contacted through their agent..
Oh, there you go again....Come on Dillon........she's got one year of eligibility left..........why not go to UConn where she'll get great coaching and a pretty good chance of winning an NC!!!![]()
We know that Geno never guarantees PT or a starting role and yet, over the past 2 seasons he has lost a total of 1 player to the transfer portal, Q who was last off the bench and wanted to go someplace where she could play. Every other top school has lost key starters or rotation players to the portal.Oh, there you go again....
I'm guessing she entered the portal for a few reasons, one of which being that Vic Schaefer is trying to land another veteran guard named Kneepkens. As I read more throughout this transfer season, the pursuit of NIL and opportunities for post-college positioning is huge. That means Playing Time. Can UConn. S. Carolina, UCLA really guarantee that? Even the old proverb, "great players assume they're going to start" might not hold when there's one year to get all this stuff done. Plus, with Azzi Fudd (sorry, still in a Lenten mood) being the featured scorer for the time being at guard, why would Phelia entertain her? And why would Geno risk the pipeline of other players he has in Storrs?
I'm guessing that only Williams is still in play here, fitting right into a one season role while Jana, Ice, Ayanna and Gandy are being evaluated. Heckel is a 3 year obligation and was at Kelsey Plum's Dawg camp with KK and Kelis, so probably thought too much competition there and is looking elsewhere. We know that Geno never guarantees PT or a starting role and yet, over the past 2 seasons he has lost a total of 1 player to the transfer portal, Q who was last off the bench and wanted to go someplace where she could play. So culture is a “thing” at UConn. Whether that has to do with chasing a national championship, developing as a “pro-ready” player or simply that a player wants to commit to being a part of a TEAM, and everything that entails.
The challenge for Geno is to find that one or two players in the transfer portal who want UConn’s culture and will be a compliment to the returning roster. That’s exactly what he found in Evina, Dorka & Kaitlyn. We shall see if Williams, Heckel or some other transfer fills that role this coming season.
Great post and fair statements, all...There are some caveats, of course: The "program" lost a few players to the portal in the not-too-distant past. Has Geno/Chris tightened up the ship or is there a nice run by this particular crew? Yes, Geno produces "pro-ready" players, but other programs since the Stewie years have also done a good job of that, as well, including the poster's alma mater. The concept of the Team and the unified pursuit of championships -- plus the fact they seemed to like each other a lot -- is noticeable and admirable. We know that Geno never guarantees PT or a starting role and yet, over the past 2 seasons he has lost a total of 1 player to the transfer portal, Q who was last off the bench and wanted to go someplace where she could play. The 2017 recruiting class that included Walker, AEH, Combs & Gordon was really the last time UConn dealt with major player departures as 3 of 4 transferred and Walker left for the pros after her junior season. There were a lot of reasons why that particular class was problematic. But I think that it’s fair to say that Geno subsequently made some changes to the way he deals with players, and there really hasn’t been much turnover at all since then.Great post and fair statements, all...There are some caveats, of course: The "program" lost a few players to the portal in the not-too-distant past. Yes, he's selective in who comes aboard...but that's why they fit into rotations: Chen being an excellent example.
Meanwhile, out in Indiana: After starting her HC coaching stint at ND with a lot of churn (players who fit into McGraw's system of offense eventually left, while her offensive type of gang came in), Ivey used the portal as a way of filling gaps, but -- for the most part -- they fit in with the types of players she was targeting in H.S. recruiting: Maya Dodson, Lauren Ebo, Anna DeWolfe, Liza Karlen and, of course, Dara Mabry, who should've been there from the get go.
This year, things have gone a bit kerflooey (for a variety of reasons and confluences), but Ivey has been selective, even in her choice of players who -- on the surface -- look like role players. However, there are reportedly three portal candidates visiting this week/weekend, along with HS prospect, Savvy Swords. That's interesting because Kayleigh Heckel is due in and they're both from LuHI, home of Kate Koval, who transferred out. So, whatever happened with Koval, doesn't seem -- to a point -- have had an institutional damper. Stay tuned there.
It's a new world: UConn has done a good job of being who they are (while making subtle adjustments, I presume), while Ivey needs -- to use Marcus Freeman's phrase -- question everything going forward. She still has three very good players in Hidalgo, Prosper and Bransford (back from injury), but won't have Leah Macy until next year.
I was referring to Williams but I get your point........the question is does she want to improve as a player who wants to be WNBA draftable next season and possibly win an NC or does she simply want to get more playing time and take her chances....Oh, there you go again....

Is this William or Phalia? (Or anyone for that matter)? No doubt Geno and staff prepare players for the pro's but since the Diggins years, ND has been adept -- particularly at guard -- with doing so, as well. A guard like Phalia wouldn't be "taking chances" at ND or S. Carolina (heck, she's probably good enough as is, but point taken).I was referring to Williams but I get your point........the question is does she want to improve as a player who wants to be WNBA draftable next season and possibly win an NC or does she simply want to get more playing time and take her chances....
If I were the coach, I would hope it would push them forward and create even more urgency and competition in their minds to develop quicker and know there are reasons why I'm looking to bring in a player like Williams. Is this William or Phalia? Given how well Aaliyah Edwards developed at UConn (and in Canada), I think Williams would benefit from a year with UConn...particularly playing alongside Strong. But would that push back your other centers? Who knows....
I think she did it for the fans, not the media attention, TBH.Fulwiley is either "wide open good" or "wide open bad". There was not a consistent Fulwiley at any point in her career at South Carolina. She wouldn't play within the game and show flashes, when possible. If the ball was in her hand, she tried to make it a highlight "flash play". She was always going for Sportscenter reels and media responses....it seemed. I am not sure that will play long term anywhere. She seems likable and I am sure she is. She has played that way her whole life and that is hard to change and maybe it's something she shouldn't change. I am just not sure it translates into a WNBA career or will be something that another coach won't try to alter or bench her when things go south. We shall see how it all plays out. I wish her luck.....unless she goes to LSU. Then I hope she and that team lose every game. Mulkey is scum IMO.
Note those three transfers really underperformed based on their high school rankings and didn't fare much better after they left UConn..........a rare case where Geno's judgement of talent veered off track.....The 2017 recruiting class that included Walker, AEH, Combs & Gordon was really the last time UConn dealt with major player departures as 3 of 4 transferred and Walker left for the pros after her junior season. In this age of the transfer portal and NIL, it is a luxury to have 4 years to recruit and develop a core group of kids out of HS. When you look at UConn’s tremendous execution on both sides of the ball during the NCAA Tournament, the not so secret sauce is Geno’s ability to build his team over multiple seasons from the ground up. Trying to do that on a team with a revolving door of players transferring in and out every year is nearly impossible.

This is in no way a comment on what her personality or character is like off the court. And obviously, willingly going to South Carolina and coming off the bench for two season shows that she is trying to be a team player. Again, it’s just a play style I’m not really a fan of that’s taking over basketball at all levels, from the NBA on down. A lot of one-on-one instead of team ball.
Still very talented and on the right team, she could be one of the best players in college basketball.

Laila Phelia, # 5 with Texas as a senior guard, reportedly played 8 gamesI liked Phelia and wanted her at UConn last year. Personally though. I don’t want a player that has been in the portal more than once.
