I mentioned Heckel a few days ago with a “?” after her name when several BY’ers were suggesting that UConn needed a pg. I really wasn’t serious. But who knows? I know she’s from just down the road in Port Chester, NY so UConn gets her a lot closer to home.

With Q departing, UConn now has 2 available scholarships. Could the Huskies be looking at both Williams and Heckel?

And going to LSU reunites her with Kate Koval, her LuHi teammate.
Of course, many Benchers were hoping for this reunion, but -- hey -- Lent's been tough in the Bend this year. :(;)

Probably a no, she's good but just a sophomore, I expect Geno would like another one year rental.

Isn't that what development is all about? Geesh, even the announcement that Kneepkens is coming would be a dissuading to a Tessa Johnson, who strikes me as being a tremendous individual and team-oriented player.

Looking back, Dawn has never been shy about loading up on posts (I was shocked Dauda was taken out of the back storage room) and, yes, she has brought in a Pao Pao. If Staley has always operated on this mindset, maybe it just wasn't as apparent to me. Or has she shifted to stay in line with a more "win, win, win" mentality?

BTW, of those four schools listed, I see the Lynn Roberts match most in Oklahoma, particularly if Payton Verhulst's eligibility is up. Kneepkens would be a natural there.

There is some truth to the idea that South Carolina is the only program that gets scolded for participating in the portal.

No player is guaranteed a starting spot merely by hanging around. Neither Fulwiley nor Tessa made much progress this year. If they had the portal approach might have been different.

The "NIL/transfer portal era" cuts both ways. If players have the ability to earn money off of their name, image, and likeness and can enter and exit a program for any reason, then coaches should be encouraged to raise expectations for their players (who are earning large sums of money). Performance/execution matters. Why should a player be empowered to leave/exit to "chase a bag" when they perform well but expect for a coaching staff to provide a nurturing environment for them when they underperform/fail to meet expectations? That's not how the real world works. If I have to show you the money to get you to stay (or get you to come to my program), then you either have to "show out" on the court (practice and games) or be shown the door.

This is part of the "unintended consequences" of NIL that the players either didn't see coming or didn't think would apply to them. When money is involved, the stakes are raised. You're no longer a "kid". You're an adult with expectations that either have to be met where you are or you will lose ground to someone more capable of meeting said expectations. Welcome to the real world, kiddos!

For the record, I love Tessa and Lay for what they've done for South Carolina. However, they haven't taken the necessary steps towards making a player like Ta'Niya Latson superfluous. Ta'Niya is very much a need for Gamecocks WBB because she's shown that she can do what Tessa and Lay have not--be consistent in a scoring role against elite competition.

Not sure when that post was made, however Skim posted this yesterday. Could this be in relation to that post?

No. That specific post was about another “insider” claiming that several schools moved on from McMiller. Or something of that nature

Geno loves pg’s and Heckel has 3 years left to play. Why in the world would Geno prefer a “one year rental” over a kid with a big upside?
I remember watching Heckel in a high school game and she was quite a handful.......she looked like a seventh grader in comparison to her teammates but she could really play and had a killer's mentality.......she really needs to improve her three point shooting if she wants to be a complete guard.....

I believe the rationale for a one year rental is that it doesn't impact future recruiting. You have the same number of offers for 2026 recruits for example. If you add someone for three years you have one less to offer 2026 and 2027 recruits.

So it can still be worth it for a major acquisition, but it has to be weighed against maybe not having a spot for a target next year, say Harpring for the sake of argument, or maybe that player wouldn't want to come if there was already a very good player at their position.

The one year rental doesn't impact future recruiting at all. We did pursue a two year player last year in Beers, who I think would have been worth it, fulfilling a need, and likely being better than any HS big we had a chance at in 2025 including Somfai.

I think another factor that might come into play is the confidence level the coaches have in getting the players they want from HS next year at the position a potential portal addition plays. For example if they thought they had a very good chance with Harpring, maybe they wouldn't be interested in Heckel at all. On the other hand, if we were in the mix for Harpring, but with many other top programs, and had no reason to believe we were near the top of the list, then a bird in hand say Heckel might be a better bet than a potentially better one in the bush.

I like Heckel but I don’t get this move. She seems similar to KK. Not a great 3 PT shooter but high energy. With Fisher coming in and Azzi being able to be PG at times, I feel like we’re set in the PG role (KK, Azzi, Fisher). I know Fisher hasn’t proven herself yet but the starters tend to play a good chunk of minutes anyways.

I think this makes sense. I don't love it for Jones but I think if she wants to start and have a shot leading a team playing big minutes it makes sense. Janiah Barker had W aspirations. I thought she wanted to enter the draft. But she sacrificed a lot came off the bench. She's one of those super talented players that I feel hasn't found the right fit to maximize her potential. I don't even know where that would be. I actually think UCLA's departures make sense and if they are healthy even as currently constituted are really a top 4 team. Betts, Betts, Jaquez, Rice, CLW, Gardener, Dugalic is still a super strong top 7.

I wondered why both Timea Gardiner and Janiah Barker would transfer to UCLA one year ago when Dugalic was a returning starter. Comments were out there that Barker made the move because of her girlfriend who lived in L.A. Barker could be leaving for several reasons, but the younger Betts coming in might reduce her court minutes even more.

I agree, I know we don’t really know how Fisher will do next season. But do we really think Heckel will bring that much more to the table? Her stats or play weren’t exactly eye popping, I’d much rather pick up portal players who have a proven resume given you’re kind of working over players that committed to you out of high school. Just seems like the right way to go about it. And at PG I’d add that as long as players are healthy we have KK, Azzi, Kelis, AND Cheli. I just don’t see what Heckel brings that we don’t already have. Not to mention Sarah is basically a point forward.
