2025 NBA Draft Thread

All depends on if it gets them a ring. But they do have a bevy of future picks and swaps also. Some of those swaps could convince a third team to join the trade to lighten the actual players the Spurs send out.

The Spurs own the #2/#14//#38 this year.

They also own a first round swap with ATL next year, their second, Utah's second, NOP/POR (worst of) second, and two other seconds.

In 2027 they own ATL's pick (unprotected) plus swap rights for their second with a few teams.

In 2028 they have swap rights with Boston, and own three seconds.

In 2029 they have their own First and three seconds.

In 2030 first round swap rights with the better of Dal/Min

In 2031 first round swap rights with SAC
Sounds like an embarrassment of riches for the Spurs. With that they have pressure, more than usual for a front office, to make the correct moves.

Am I the only one that thinks if the Spurs keep the pick and decide between benching Castle or Harper, they'd pick Harper?

A 6'6 PG that is best known for getting downhill and finishing at the rim, while also being a good passer to set up teammates? Steph Castle literally just won ROY doing that while averaging 15/5/5. Why would you replace the reigning ROY with another rookie and hope he does the same thing? You could just keep playing the guy that already did it
What you present makes a lot the sense BUT this is professional sports where the sense meter is full of cobwebs.

It's hard to tell how much Liam was affected by the high ankle sprain. He seems to have shown much more athleticism at the combine then he showed us at UConn. His injury came just as he was coming into his own and then he missed 8 games in the middle of a 35 game season.

latest ESPN mock draft after the combine has him at #18.

18. Washington Wizards (via Memphis)

Liam McNeeley, SG/SF, UConn
Freshman
| TS%: 53.6

Combine measurements:
Height without shoes:
6-6 ¾ | Weight: 214
Standing reach: 8-3 ½ | Wingspan: 6-8 ½

Intel and fit: Expect the Wizards to keep making draft picks as they add to the fifth-youngest roster in the league with an average age of 25.1. In this scenario, after drafting Johnson, Washington would add a more versatile complementary wing in McNeeley, who would fit with its preferences for positional size and feel.

McNeeley measured and tested a little better than expected at the combine (6-8 in shoes and 215 pounds) and seems to be trending positively. After an ankle injury hampered him for a chunk of his freshman season at UConn, he'll have an opportunity to help himself on the workout circuit, where he can reaffirm some of the questions around his athleticism and long-range shooting, and remind teams why he entered the season viewed as a lottery candidate. -- Woo

This article is saying Liam's going to be outside the lottery. I hope it's wrong.

Was surprised that the other "fallers" were Kam Jones and RJ Luis.
I think that is expected. He's projected to be in the late teens somewhere and could sneak into the lottery. His measurements helped him. His fall-off post ankle injury hurt him.

Kam is projected to be at the very back of round 1 to early round 2. Didn't have a great year.

#11 is higher than I’ve seen Liam projected recently, but I’d love to see him play with Donovan in Portland. They need a wing who can shoot. #11 is a point in the draft where I have no idea what will happen.

Have seen Liam all over the board, as low as 25. He’s got a big delta in how he’s seen. Would love lottery but not sensing it’s going to happen.

Liam had a really good NBA experience so far: taller 6'8" in shoes now, 3pt shooting was better than when injured here. Could go anywhere from 12 - 23 reasonably. A lot of teams could use a facilitating wing that can shoot from distance, rebound, and has a good first step.

So much hype for other wings might push him toward the lower end of that, but I would be shocked if he isn't a fantastic pick by some team.

Vecenie has Liam 17th in his final draft guide big board. The Ringer/J Kyle Mann has him 28th on his updated today big board, 21st in the mock.

I think Liam's game is gonna translate to the NBA a lot better than most people think.

Rumor has it the Blazers like him, but 11th seems a little high. They may trade down to get two picks (Nets/Magic?). I agree he is likely more suited to the NBA, and his combine didn't hurt either.

I agree. I think he will be a very valuable piece as your third guy on a really good team. He's a significantly better shooter than he showed (he was like 38% from 3 pre-injury with a slow start), more athletic than we realize, and has a ton of intangibles. He's not a #1 option, and he struggled in that role in part because he was asked/expected to do far too much at this stage of his career.

They brought him in for a workout, but I agree that 11th seems too high based on everybody’s rankings. They could trade down if there is nobody they love at 11. The only issue with accumulating more picks is that they have a weirdly crowded roster for a non-playoff team, due to the emergence of their young guys while their high-priced veterans are still on the roster.

This is interesting. It’s good news for those of us who want Steph to stay with the Spurs.

Sounds like the sixers might want to get Harper if they move up. not sure how that would work with Maxey as two ball-dominant guys.
