2025-26 Injuries (already)

Is this her second major injury? I seem to remember an injury sustained during a 3v3 tournament a few summer ago.

Actually that was her younger sister who injured her knee last summer (2024) in the tournament. Hopefully she is good to go this fall for the beloved Duke Blue Devils.

Ok this just s+cks bigtime. What are we, one week into pre-season practice?

Can one hope that there is a concerted, concentric effort to address the prevalence of ACL injuries? And if there's anything that can be done to cut down on them?

As for Chloe Kitts, all one can do at this point, is hope the surgery goes well, as well as the recuperation.

Isn't this the same kid who tore her ACL last summer playing international ball? She surely deserves a break at some point. Closer to home, Vandy's Madison Greene, who almost certainly would have started at point guard this season, recently suffered her second ACL tear in three years and will also miss the season. I knew she was hurt but the nature of the injury, ACL, was verified earlier this week.

Ugh.....this is a different trend that breaks my heart when I read these announcements. While it's possible to have a productive career after two consecutive ACLs, like Laeticia Amihere for example, I can't fathom the mental health side of it. Eventually they get through it I'm sure, but damn at the same time.

Is this an addressable thing? I’m asking sincerely. It just seems to me that bball is particularly susceptible to this kind of injury. All the quick cuts and jumps on an unforgiving surface. If there were some sort of mitigating preparation that could be recommended, I hope someone figures out how to implement it.

I think they should consult with track and field development experts. Specifically, limiting overuse during physical development of a female body. Trainers of track athletes and swimmers too, are very cognizant when it comes to balancing the intensity and frequency of training. Even baseball has made adjustments with limiting pitch counts and using more RELIEF pitchers. IMO, they play too much…too early.

If this becomes the focus, I would hope that youth sports and specialization is focused on in depth. It's happening way too soon from in my experience, especially from what I saw when I coached youth development programs. Young athletes, both male and female, are dealing with injuries much younger because of this.

I think you’re probably right. I also think bball places unique stresses on the body. Track and field sports don’t tend to require analogous movements. Not baseball either. Maybe football, though that’s not relevant here. Geno once speculated in an interview about the value of playing more than one sport in high school. Maybe that’s related.

That's where the issue of specialization comes in. Kids are focusing on one more primarily instead of playing multiple sports. Playing a sport now is a full year thing instead of what most of us were used to when we went to school.

The money behind it too is insane. The number of prep schools for basketball that I'm seeing just for the city of Toronto alone is scary, even for a city of its size. And it's not only basketball. Soccer, hockey, baseball are all in the racket too.
