2024 Red Sox

It was also rumored that Bloom did not get along very well with his World Series winning manager. The hardware will normally win out. If Bloom stayed, Cora was definitely walking. Breslow got him signed, stabilized the clubhouse, and did just enough at the deadline to show a commitment to the MLB club. It is no secret that the World Series is not a primary goal until next season, but if they get into the tournament, anything can happen. That said, I agree with @HuskyHawk . Bloom is Boston is a dead horse.

My son and I were offered tix by good friends and we are headed up to Boston on Sunday. This will be my first live game since 2021 and it's like I'm 8 year year old again.

The Sox are 3.5 games back of the final WC spot and are right in the middle of the pack in terms of strength of schedule (#16, 36 games remaining, .498). The Twins and Guardians have nearly identical schedules to each other, but have a slightly tougher stretch (#10, 35, .504 and #11, 36, .504) remaining. The Twins also play three in Boston on the second to last weekend of the season. KC's remaining schedule is comparatively brutal (#3, 35, .535).

Wow, the wheels really came off. Just an awful stretch of baseball.

I wouldn't worry too much. You ran into a buzzsaw. The Mets are the best team in baseball since, I believe, the first week in June and Lindor is on an all-time run right now.

Sure, but the Diamondbacks? It's been ugly. The best news is Roman Anthony is just crushing AAA.

The Diamondbacks are 79-70 and 9 games better than the Sox. Do you think they're bad or something?

They were six games better when that series started. The Sox were coming off winning a series against Houston and splitting with Baltimore, then collapsed and got blown out.

You know the Diamondbacks were in the World Series last year, right? Is this the typical AL ignorance?

I check out the Mets thread on occasion. Early-June, that was about the same time all you guys were giving up, iirc.

I knew the rough numbers. Did you see the turnaround coming? It must be nice having a competent front office.

So what are you all hoping to see? Here's my wish list.
  • Soto - hell no. LH Hitter benefitting from Yankee stadium. Just keep Abreu.
  • Hernandez - Yes, need that RH bat but need to move Yoshida and possibly Casas.
  • Bregman - Alternative to Hernandez, would move Devers to Dan Hurley/1B
Still have too much depth in the OF. Bregman probably makes more sense given Duran, Abreau, Rafaella and Anthony are all legit starters. Rafaella probably becomes a super sub utility guy. Mayer is waiting at SS. If Griffen doesn't win the 2B job shift Story to 2B. Teel should make the jump at C.
  • Corbin Burnes - Yes. Rotation needs a guy like him and it weakens Baltimore.
  • Garrett Crochet - Yes. Trade some of that minor league depth and add the lefty starter you need. Use some of the money save from not signing Soto to extend Crochet.
Acquire both of those guys and Whitlock can move to the pen to bolter it. Crochet, Burnes, Houck, Bello is a hell of a first four and there are several decent #5 options.

They don't need to spend stupidly. Two starters and one RH bat and this team is a contender.

Man, I just want them to do SOMETHING. Last offseason was the nadir of the descent that started with the Mookie trade.

I'd love to get Burnes or Crochet. Both would be amazing.

Lots of smoke today re Soto. Lifelong Sox fan, etc. But recently, in Boston, when there's smoke there's no fire.

.-.
If I'm the Sox I make sure I go toe to toe with both NY teams for him. If you can't make him the highest offer between the three teams, get creative - offer opt outs after four years
if that's something he and Boras would find enticing. Play off his love of the Sox when he was a kid and papi, manny and Pedro were on the team.
We've held our powder for years, this is the kind of guy you use it on. A 26 year old future hall of famer. A 21st century Ted Williams (or at least close to TW)

No park in MLB is built for Soto like Fenway. His oppo power in that park would be laughable as long as he elevates. Sign the man JH.

They are doing that.

"Soto was said to be impressed by the Red Sox’ presentation, which included a video taking note of the franchise’s history of star players from the Dominican Republic, Soto’s native country. The Red Sox laid out their plans for the future and highlighted the crop of soon-to-be-arriving top prospects while giving a detailed outline of ownership and Fenway Sports Group.

In turn, Soto wanted to know about the team’s commitment to winning, player evaluation methods, and Fenway Park and its facilities."

The Sox aren't going to sign Soto. This is just kabuki theater.

I just want them to do something to make this team a contender.

I haven't been this low on the organization in my entire life.

Depends on whether he does what most of them do and goes to the highest bidder. That will be the Yankees or Mets most likely.

I'm trying to make sense of it all, given he's a lefty. Reports yesterday were that the White Sox were ok with Abreau as the centerpiece of a deal for Crochet. So that leaves a spot for Soto and you can still put Anthony in the other corner with Duran in center.

Kristian Campbell will start at AAA but if Grissom doesn't make a jump, look for him at 2B.
If the Sox can move Yoshida and not eat all his contract, then Devers could go to Dan Hurley and Campbell could play 3B. If Mayer is worthy of a call up you shift Story to 2B and you've got an incredible lineup and very good defensive team.

The Sox are freaking loaded with talented position players. Need to sign a starter, trade for Crochet. That lets them move Whitlock to the pen, where he's been tremendous.

Hat tip to Breslow here, read the market correctly. Now they really can trade for Crochet and sign a front line starter as well.

Talk about commitment to the bit. Breslow just loves signing pitchers that can't pitch and passing on and trading pitchers that can.

Eh, not really. Giloito had never really been hurt until we got him. Whitlock was an injury recovery signing and it panned out very well. Sandoval may be the same. Crochet was a great addition. They are likely hoping for Sasaki.

What did the Sox get out of his deadline acquistions besides the DL?

Deadline acquisitions aren’t really relevant to building a team. Those are player dumps for non playoff teams.

Those acquisitions were meant to bolster the team for the playoff push. All of them were failures. Breslow is a failure.

There was no playoff push. They knew they were a year out. Everything has been setting up this year and next, when Anthony, Campbell, Mayer and Teel (now converted to Crochet) arrive. Rafaella and Abreu arrived last year. Sox fans get so riled up about spending. The Yankees and Mets would be thrilled to have the cost controlled core of position players the Sox have, most of which are still getting better. The outfield incredibly strong and they are all young.

The Yankees just spent on Goldschmidt, you don't think they'd love to have Casas instead? They definitely would. The Sox are overly left handed, but aside from that they are overloaded with talented position players. They don't have any "needs" aside from right handed power. Pitching is different and Crochet was a huge addition, filthy stuff. Chapman is still good too. Need another starter.

And there it is. Still in on Sasaki, but rotation is set. Best it's been in a long time. Now for that RH power bat.

Nice 1-year move. Lets see how he is with a full year removed from the TJ recovery. His regular season wasn't very good but his final month plus playoffs showed some promise. In particular his two appearances vs. NY.

Crochet
Houck
Bello
Crawford
Buehler

Depth:
Giolito (at some point early in season when healthy)
Criswell (start in AAA or long man/spot starter in pen)
Fitts (to start in AAA)
Preister (to start in AAA)
Dobbins (to start in AAA)
Sandoval (really for 2026 but possible in 2nd half of 2025)

Bullpen:

Left:
Chapman
J. Wilson
Penrod/Bernardino

Right:
Hendricks
Whitlock
Slaten
Criswell (long man/spot starter)

Probably the most starting pitching depth we've had between the majors and AAA in a long long time. Breslow has done a good job in adding arms over his 2 years.

Also, I say no chance we get Sasaki. Would be unreal surprise, but almost as likely as mega millions.
