They seem to really believe in the 2 center system. If thats the case, and Samson is in line for major minutes in that system (as he should be) you probably aren’t getting the bigger names like big cliff etc interested in being a part of that.

Sanogo like quicks. Seems decisive wit the ball. He does camp out in the defensive lane.

Definitely talent there. Rivals had him #31 in class of '22. Clingan #39. Looking at his two games vs Illinois, 31 minutes, 16.5 pts, 6 rebounds, 7 of 9 FT. But then there are the two Purdue games where he averaged 5 fouls over 22.5 minutes and 4 points,. But 8.5 rebounds. Went to the line once in the 45 minutes of playing time.
We should all trust Hurley and staff with all this stuff, they're the best in the country at it. Also factor in that Reed and Hausen played their only two college seasons for absolutely terrible coaches.

Edey ate him up, but there's no Zach Edeys in college basketball next year.

Kind of meh on Reed. Would prefer Cliff or Aidoo but doesn’t seem like there interested in us.

Hurley hasn’t really implemented that in his system tho. Excluding the first year he was here, his starting big is usually getting 25-30 minutes a game. Clingan this year was down a bit given injuries and blowouts but was basically averaging that towards the end. Obviously he likes having two really good bigs but they don’t split time equally. Them attacking the portal for a big of his caliber suggests they are going after a big to start. Hard to see it otherwise.

There is no big man in the world outside of Jokic who could look even decent w/ a bad coach and no guards.

Reed has great size and close to elite feel -- sets good screens (could & will improve) and is a very, very good passer. Not a quick jumper so he's not an excellent finisher around the rim, but he's still very good.

Very good but not elite paint protector. Excellent 1v1 post defender and very good pick & roll defender.

Basically a poor man's version of Clingan. I don't think we reasonably could've asked for me.
He may be more athletic than people are giving him credit for. He is very good.

Gotta look beyond his stats. Watch the tape. Quick, Big frame, Great footwork, quick twitch, good passer, 2 yrs eligibility. He tries to play like Karl Malone. Looks like him physically. Will be great both sides with pick and roll. Someone said in other thread Jeff Adrien-ish
was thinking he looks a bit like Drummond physically

Big shoes if that's true. Jeff Adrien was a double double machine.

They are clearly recruiting over Samson. Reed Jr. is being recruited as a starting center and that should come as a surprise to no one.

Samson will stay and be a candidate for 6th-man of the year if he keeps his improving. We need a starting big.
Do you think there's any chance Samson could resurrect his 3 point shooting that he was supposedly known for in high school? His form looks so broken now on free throws, but if he could add a respectable 3 point shot to his arsenal, he would be impossible to defend because of how damn fast he is. Drag the opposing center out to the 3 point line, whoops there goes Slamson sprinting by you to get an alley-oop

It also might take a full year to get the bad coaching habits out of them, which is fine because they would be 2 year players for us

This is a question Ive had all year. Last year he won the starting 4 job over Alex in part due to his shooting range. Upon his return from his injury he would still come in and jack 3s with comfortability (very small sample size but he shot 2 3s last year and 2 3s this year as a comparison)

This year he looked like he hadnt shot a jumper in his life

He wasn't really a 3 point shooter in hs. They always showed the same few makes from his senior season in highlights.

Really like the idea of this kid and Samson splitting the 5. You’re not getting the Cliffs or Aidoos without dropping a huge bag up front, which isn’t how Dan operates. He’ll get more out of Reed than Howard ever did, and his experience in the b10 is valuable.

Having a guy go from a 45% free throw shooter with rough looking form to becoming a viable 3 point shooter in a game in one offseason seems like a big jump.

Free throws and 3 point shots are not at all the same. Even with that he’s hasn’t shown a 3 point shot at all

I get the impression theydon’t want to appear to be recruiting over Samson. This seems to be a complementary player who has muscle to play against more physical centers.

Why wouldn’t they recruit over Samson? We’re trying to win games, not collect friendship bracelets. Samson will get an opportunity to win a starting job. That’s all he can ask for. If he thinks he automatically wins a starting job due to seniority, then I don’t know what team he’s been playing on.

It’s indicative of shooting. Usually, there are parallels between being a good FT shooter and extending the range. NBA often will look at someone (say for instance Castle) and project their shooting potential based on current FT percentage. The idea being the shooting can be developed. Taking a guy whose a 43% FT shooter suggests that extending his range to a point where it’s viable in a game is unlikely.

Not super excited about the pickup but I can see why UConn is going this way. They want Johnson to stay. Well let's trust in the system and hope Johnson gains 20-25 lbs of muscle in the offseason without losing too much of his hops. Whatever happen to his shooting? He came as a recruit who could shoot from outside. I was hopng he could play more of the 4 position and not just the 5 but I don't see that happening based on how ugly his shot is right now.
Samson needs to live in the weight room the next 6 months.

Agreed to an extent.
