We still have a lot of offers out there that are still open on the second day of the early signing period.
Is it unusual to have so many not yet committed, or have we just made more offers this year?
Or, do you think the portal is making it harder because kids may be waiting for a "higher level" offer and those schools are trying to manage their rosters and may not be in a position at this time to offer some we've offered?
Yes

The December Early NLI Signing Period began in 2017.

The institution of the Transfer Portal begin in the fall of 2018.

Now throw in the extra year of eligibility due to Covid that that also complicates recruiting/roster sizes and it’s hard to compare year to year.

He’s the “known” offers made by UConn and the size of the incoming recruiting class going back to 2015 (my best guesstimate - could be +/- a couple each year);

2015 - 143 offers/31 commits (incl. transfers)
2016 - 125 offers/21 commits (incl. transfers)
*2017 - 118 offers/21commits (incl. transfers)
2018 - 175 offers/32 commits (incl. transfers)
2019 - 143 offers/29 commits (incl. transfers)
2020 - 156 offers/31 commits (incl. transfers)
2021 - 154 offers/21 commits (incl. transfers)
*2022 - 175 offers YTD

Coaching Change

Here is Indiana University Transfer haul:

IU also had major success with transfers. This seven-player group -- running backs Shaun Shivers (Auburn) and Josh Henderson (North Carolina), defensive linemen LeDarrius Cox (Ole Miss), Patrick Lucas Jr. (Ole Miss), and JH Tevis(California), linebacker Bradley Jennings Jr.(University of Miami), and receiver Emery Simmons (North Carolina) -- ranks among the nation's best.--

What is my point ...

We aren't seeing this level of P5 transfers. Nor will a layer of G5 look at UCONN today. I think there is something different in being a Indiana and playing at a B1G University and us. And Yes ... IU was 2-10 this year. Pitching that they could follow Mel Tucker's success with transfers.

What is our strategy therefore? I agree with what John Silver said. We need to be a little patient and do great due diligence. There are still 500 guys in the Transfer Portal. Being deliberate. We target the needs and get the best ... and this may last well into the summer. Kids can enter the Transfer Portal at anytime; and we can find value late. If we aren't gonna compete direct with IU or others at this level ... can we push ourselves as a State U Flagship far beyond the Sun Belt etc on kids who care about academics and ... that Syracuse-NCState-Michigan-BC schedule.

FCS all star team might work.

You are Preston Pehrson, GM of the Program, what do you search for in the next 10 player wave of guys coming to UCONN.

What I see ... the P5 Transfer Portal seems to be - the last 30 days - guys looking to land at OTHER P5 programs. One to another. Keep their hopes alive for the highest. But with 500+ names sitting there, including the 15 contributed by the University of Connecticut, what can be ours. I think this thing - the Transfer Portal - comes in waves. Because of its structure, there will be guys available well into July. So whatever stiff view we had, it's over. If we can pick up a LT on July 20, be prepared with your due diligence and video review. Like our normal, there are states more likely to flow to us. Pehrson, from his Texas Tech background, has his fingers on the Juco and the Texas 11 FBS programs - kids looking for play. That's how the two Juco lineman showed up the last Sunday of our recent recruiting bonanza.

NEEDS: One more QB - definitely a HS rising guy (if available) and maybe 2 QB total. This late, youre probably talking about a HS kid unhappy with what his chosen school has brought the last months AND maybe a kid that saw his school recruit over him. What does that QB Luke at South Carolina today feel today after they bring in Spencer Rattler + two 4 star HS kids in a week.

OLine. NEED one of two more experienced transfers. ONE LT. I think 2 good pieces plus Guidone provides a solid adjunct to the kids we are developing.

A Nose Tackle type to replace some of what Travis Jones gave us. We now have lots of Edge.

Linebackers. Love Jackson Mitchell and Ian Swenson. Hunter Webb was a good plug. Need more.

WRs and TEs were largely targeted and procured this past week. We actually hired John Allen ... and the next thing you found was he was reaching into his past relationships with Nigel and his Maryland coaching network with Hicks and targeting. That was not random. He went direct to those two. And maybe that is the fallout from Xavier Brown. Always need to look for more playmakers.

We took Art Thompkins a few years ago. We need another like him. At RB. Is that Carlos Washington from UNH or Will Knight: maybe. But Carter needs to be supplemented with more experienced rush attack.

When Palatine whines about Spanos, I am looking at this. Charlton, Barthel, Marinelli, Sammis, Diabite, Hilliard. 6 guys replacing our previous 6. A energy; six guys ambitious with remarkably parallel rises in their career arc. Compare that to Randy bringing Aaron Smith, Wholley, Curome Cox, Corey, Giufre, Horton, Weiss, Moynseenko along. Do you see a complete transformative mindset. Those 6 are the institutional energy to our next day. Mostly Charlton's ability to craft an offense and grown a QB.

I am not participating in any debate on 3 wins or 6-6. Wins are what we need. Next stop Logan Utah - where I have amazing personal history.

Deyavie Hammond
Will Knight?
IDK...Will Knight would be good.
I got around to watching Deyavie Hammond, he would be a real difference maker for the OL.

Btw - Will's younger brother Wayne, also a RB, signed with JMU on 12/15. Wayne originally committed to Stony Brook.
Will finishes up at his community college here in December and I dont see other recruiting activity on his twitter account, so it seems like he would be a good guess on the EJ Barthel post.
