2020 Recruiting: Marcus Santos-Silva

Rebounding is already going to be a huge strength. If we were to add him we would be the best rebounding team in the Big East, one of the best in the country.

Agreed. If we don't get Sanogo, this guy makes a lot of sense as a backup plan.

Provides absolutely zero floor spacing. But is another good interior defender and rebounder.

Not the worst thing.

But if you’re against playing whaley and Carlton together, this is the same problem, just with 5 more quality fouls.

Sanogo would yield the same problem as well.

With the recent moves Hurley seems to be prioritizing rebounding over spacing. Teams will play off Jackson and Martin for example but they rebound. We took a little bit of a chance on Springs because he was such a good rebounder.

It's really not the same problem overall because he's a really good rebounder and very large. I mean if no Sanogo I say please make it happen!!

sanogo is a long term investment. You can deal with that for a long term investment of his caliber.
But also just saying that how people say stuff about the Carlton/Whaley duo. I never thought 5 was a need for 2020. We have 3/4 centers in the Hurley system already (depending on how you classify springs)

Martin and jackson will get plenty of open looks as stretch 4s if we are adding another center to the roster.

he’s a better version of Carlton. But stylistically it’s going to be similar challenges pairing him with Whaley.

No need for more floor spacing when porkchop is draining 2 threes per game next season!

sir, I’ll have what he’s having...

is that grain alcohol or just pure ethanol?

While you may be stretching it (not the floor) I believe Whaley will be making a nice percentage of 10-15 footers which will help open things up a bit. His stroke improved tremendously and I am sure he is working on it even more as we speak. Not saying 60% or anything but even at that distance for him the 40 area would help the team out, think he can make that happen.

yeah I was joking about making two threes per game but I really do think he will become reasonably reliable as a shooter. He’s shown he works really hard and is able to make improvements that show in games.

Sorry that Dirk Nowitzki isn't on the transfer market.

Hope you are right, however I thought his play was better at the end of the year when he was passing up those shots and concentrating on put backs ,rebounding and moving without the ball. I actually did not like when he made early jump shots because I thought it gave him a false sense of confidence which lead to some ill advised shots.

While he wouldn’t be my first choice, he doesn’t seem like the worst choice, either. He would probably be better than Springs this year. Against certain teams, he gives us the option of playing two big guys. In other matchups, either he, Whaley, or Carlton would obviously end up playing a lot less.

Not a lot of film on him. Found this from one game.

Definitely a really good player. Would make us better. Size and athleticism is there judging by the short videos. If anyone has seen him before... How much of a 4 is he? I would be foolish to turn down talent if he's interested, but I'm not sure this solves our immediate problem.

Played all his minutes at the 5 last year . Marcus Santos-Silva, 6-7, 250, PF, Grad, VCU
Stats: 12.8 ppg, 8.9 rpg
Scout’s take: “Below the rim guy, but carves out a lot of space. Strong lower body and can seal and duck-in deep. He actually moves pretty well laterally and can hedge ball screens, and do things defensively he doesn’t get credit for. Non-shooter and a poor FT shooter. One-hand dominant inside and struggles to score over length. Has to play the 5 and doesn’t give a ton of rim protection.”

Kinda funny Kentucky is recruiting both him and haarms.

I’d bet one of them ends up there. They need a big body down low.

Worst case scenario he’s our back up 5. I don’t trust Carlton and I don’t think Hurley does either. Carlton will see a major reduction in minutes wether Santos or Sanogo or someone else comes.

He had 14 rebounds in the Rhode Island/VCU YouTube game I watched to scout Martin. Top 80 in both rebound rates. Makes him one of the best rebounders in the country.

Seemed like a 5 to me in how they used him. It was post entries, penetration dump offs, and attacking glass.

I know it's VCU and that is their style, but he had the same steal rate as Alterique, so he could probably guard 4s.

Has the shine started to come off Calipari from the kids perspectives? Also wonder how much this G-league thing would hurt his program

Never mind - just saw he has the top class right now per 247 LOL.

That is all you need from a 4. Akok hurt us all year on offense because he spent way too much time on the perimeter. It's a rare skill to have a big man that can really be a consistent scorer out there. But you need your 4 to be able to score inside and pop midrange J's.
