2019 FIBA Americup

From Lou’s IG. Is it possible that Lou and Liv both made the team?!

Absolutely agree...and hoping this is a the 'shot in the arm' Lou might need to get things moving in the right direction in her Professional BB career...both abroad and in WNBA.

Sure hope they don't have to wear these numbers in the tournament!?!
This should also be a big confidence booster for Liz. Surrounded by Pro's might make her nervous but by tournaments end, surrounded by those great players, will give her a ton of mental strength.
Good Luck to all.

Looks like Tournament is on ESPN +, which is $4.99 a month. I used ESPN+ a few months ago when KSam44 was playing for GB in a FIBA tournament in Europe. Watched for 2 weeks and then cancelled a few days before auto renewal. It was not a problem to do.

I think the numbers somewhat reflect their temporary status on the national team in lieu of the talent that's not available right now.

Sue Bird (Seattle Storm)
Break down this week’s training camp:
I thought camp went great. It’s always interesting when you have a new group of people and you’re trying to learn new plays, learn new defenses, and make what usually is a month’s worth of work into three days getting ready for competition. I think everyone came in with an open mind and really did a great job, especially for how young the group was. I’m looking forward to how they do in Puerto Rico.

Olivia Nelson-Ododa (University of Connecticut)
What has it been like for you to be at this camp and be around so many veterans?
It’s been an incredible experience. I’ve been able to learn so much from watching the vets in front of me, what they do, how they talk and communicate and just how they play overall.

Are you excited to travel to Puerto Rico and play in the AmeriCup?
It’s always an honor to be able to play with USA across your chest. To be able to go down and compete, and especially to have the chance to learn from the best, it’s going to be an amazing experience.

How much will this help you with your upcoming college season?
Definitely just competing at a higher speed, a higher pace and learning a lot more than just being at school will definitely help a lot for me going into my season. Also, I think it’ll help a lot with confidence. When you’re around the best people, playing with and learning from the best people, it’ll be something great to carry back to my team.

Christyn Williams (University of Connecticut)
What has it been like for you the past two days to be on the court with so many legends of the game?
It’s been great. I’m taking advantage of the opportunity. These are players I’ve looked up to when I was younger. So, for me to actually be playing with them, that’s unbelievable. It’s been great. I’ve learned a lot so far.

It looked like you were picking Sue Bird’s brain after practice today. What were you asking her?
Defensive-wise, in college they don’t really play certain stuff like they did today. So I was just trying to get some pointers on how to work through that, and she helped me.

What will you take away from this experience?
Learning as much as I can, just soaking up all the knowledge. I mean, we have legends on the floor right now. So, I’m just trying to learn as much as possible in these three days.

Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury)
On the short training the team has ahead of the AmeriCup
You know, it’s what we do best. We cut and paste. We get commitments from all these guys who take time out of their busy schedules, whether they’re a WNBA player, college player, whether you finished a week ago or whether you finished 48 hours ago. I think the commitment to this team has always been our priority. You see that with all these players here, people are flying in today, tomorrow, we take pride in making sure they can put together the best team to go and compete.

What do you think of all the younger players out here?
I was just saying what a great opportunity it is for them to come out here and play against people they’ve probably watched for a long time. I thought the college kids looked great. They fit right in, they competed. And with these camps, you just keep getting better every day. You get a little more comfortable with what we’re trying to do on the court, with the people around you. I think they did a great job.

How will this help you heading into the November training?
It helps. It gets you back into the USA Basketball mind frame, what we try to get done on the court. And even today, I didn’t participate much, but to be able to go over some of the things that we did really well when we were in Spain (for the 2018 World Cup), it’s like riding a bike. You need a couple trigger points to get you back on track and for Sue and I, as well as Skylar and Sylvia, that’s important.

Okay. Unless I'm mistaken Liv is the only college kid to make the team. 5 of the 11 UConn grads. What an opportunity for all of the youngs on this team. Arike, Canada, Diamond, Lou and Pheesa. Congratulations to all of you. Well deserved. Now, anyone taking bets as to which ones actually make he National team?

So Liv made it but CW could not break the Guard Rich team. No surprise. Among the bigs, Dolson, Williams, Fowles (age + long WNBA season) , Charles, she is probably the best pure shot blocker and with International rules, that is an extra plus.

I will bet Pheesa, Diamond and Canada. Defense still matters.

Don't forget that Dawn probably likes Pheesa more than Geno from her U16 days.

Tina and Syl will provide the experience.

Phee, Diamond, Arike, and Jordin can all build on what they did this season.

Love this. Sue responded:

You’ve proven you’re worthy. I think we could work something out ROY

Pheesa. Be careful what you wish for. Here, she corrals Stewie.

I think Sabrina and Pheesa, and I don't think anyone could like Pheesa more than Geno. But it appears that the real competition at the camp for this team at forward came down to Hebert or Liv, and Live got the nod, probably due to her better size, shot blocking ability, and athleticism.

I thought you were only asking among the list

Arike, Canada, Diamond, Lou and Pheesa.

Definitely Sabrina and she would probably push Canada out (if Sue and Diana make the team)

Looks like Bird/DT/Skylar aren't ready for in game action yet. I believe every other WNBA player who was invited, and not still in the playoffs, made the team (except Jewell Loyd--maybe she didn't make it to camp?)

So depth chart is likely:

C: Fowles/Williams
PF: Charles/Dolson/ONO
SF: DeShields/Collier/KLS
SG: Arike/Sykes
PG: Canada/Sessions

The Nelson-Odobo and Khadijah Sessions selections are the oddest on paper, but I'm guessing they fill a need the team thinks they have for the upcoming tournament (and maybe Sessions is pulling an Erica Wheeler post college).

PF: Charles/Dolson/Nelson-Odobo
SF: DeShields/Collier/KLS

DeShields may start the games but Dawn will get flashbacks about why Pheesa is so valuable and will end the games.

Pheesa may lead this team in minutes as well. ;)

I actually went back and forth on who should start. In some ways, I think Deshields is perfect for the role Geno often had Angel McCoughtry play off the bench in her Olympics stints: instant energy, offense, athleticism, and defense.

Actually, I think the other way. I have seen a few DD games and she seems to be extremely good in the beginning of games and then can hit some spells where she is overamped and it can lead to issues on both sides of the ball. Not an issue in this tournament to be sure and she is a fantastic talent who is unbeatable in the open floor but during those moments when you want some structure and order on both sides, give me Pheesa.

Khadijah Sessions has got to be exhibit A in making the case that playing for the national team coach in college gives you an advantage with USAB.

Obviously we don't know who may have turned down an invite but are we that short that we can't get someone who at least was on a WNBA roster?

I don't believe Jewell was there.

She wasn’t even playing professionally. I guess she runs basketball camps? As long as she gets the job done....

Just a small edit and point of order... @bbsamjj... I realize from your avatar you are a Rutgers fan, but Olivia's name is Olivia Nelson-Ododa... not Odobo... She just got selected to represent our country in the 2019 FIBA AmeriCup tournament... Seems She deserves to have her name spelled properly by people on the BY ... and pronounced correctly by the media. Thank You :(
