Looking forward again to following a UConn baseball game from start to finish, that's for sure. Definitely looking forward to listening to Chris Jones call the game.

Top 1st, UConn offense with a scoreless inning after a 2 out single by Huber. No score.

Garbowski had a solid offensive day against Columbia on Tuesday, good to see after his slow start this season with the bat. Looks like Garbowski and Ryan Hyde are now pretty much splitting time behind the plate now.

Bottom 1st, Cooke with a scoreless inning after giving up a 2 out double that bounced off the glove of Morton, Cooke with 2 strikeouts that inning. No score.

Top 2nd, UConn offense leaves 2 runners on base after a leadoff walk for Broadhurst and a 2 out single by Hyde. No score.

.-.
Bottom 2nd, a scoreless inning for Cooke after he hits a batter with 1 out. No score.

Top 3rd, UConn offense goes down in order, with 2 strikeouts. No score.

Bottom 3rd, a 1 out 3 run homer off of Cooke. Prior to the homer, Cooke hit his 2nd batter of the game. 3-0 St. John's.

Big difference this year to prior year is our pitchers just don't have the same command of the strike zone.

Bottom 3rd, after the homer, Cooke walks a batter, but the runner is left on base. 3-0 St. John's.

True, but I'm inclined to think last season the control shown by UConn pitchers (especially the weekend starters) was something of a rarity for college baseball. Still, the better control pitchers have, no question they generally do better.

Top 4th, UConn offense goes down in order. 3-0 St. John's.

Thus far the pitching hasn't clicked and I am not sure it will as compared to last year. Austin and Pat were exceptional, and mostly everyone else in the bullpen did a great job once Kirby established himself.

I do think there is lots of room for growth. Each pitcher has their own individual areas to improve. For example, last year Cooke's fastball was tough to square up. Seems it isn't moving as much or his mix is off.

Bottom 4th, Cooke with a scoreless inning after a 2 out error off the glove of Morton puts a runner at 2B. 3-0 St. John's.

UConn outfield defense will definitely better once Simmons comes back from his hand injury. Getting to be no question in my mind that Simmons is the better CF, as Morton has had several misplays/balls off his glove in CF since the injury to Simmons.

Top 5th, Tammaro with a leadoff double, but he is stranded. 3-0 St. John's.

Bottom 5th, Mike Quigley starts the inning on the mound for UConn. Cooke threw 74 pitches, and was going a day earlier than usual due to Easter weekend.

Top 6th, UConn offense with a scoreless inning. 3-0 St. John's.

Bottom 6th, after giving up 2 walks sandwiched around a strikeout for the first out of the inning, M. Quigley comes out of the game. Fogell takes the mound for UConn.

Fogell strikeouts the next 2 batters to get out of the inning. 3-0 St. John's.

Top 7th, leadoff hitter Morton reaches base on a throwing error on a strikeout, and Tammaro follows with a walk. Daniels pinch hits for Hyde, comes up with a no out rbi single, 2 runners in scoring position due to the throw with no out. 3-1 the score. Garbowski pinch hits for Padilla, and gets an rbi single, 3-2 the score with no out.

Top 7th, Smith with a no out rbi single to tie the game at 3, UConn with 2 runners on base. Huber with a 1 out sac fly after a sac bunt, 4-3 UConn. A wild pitch brings in another run to make it 5-3 UConn. All this off of the St. John's chief closer.
