Top 10th, leading off the inning Smith is hit by a pitch, moves to 2B on a passed ball. A sac bunt attempt by Chris Brown puts runners at the corners with no outs when Northeastern tries to get the runner going to 3B. With 1 out, Stock is intentionally walked to load the bases. Simmons is hit by a pitch, UConn leads 3-2. Bushling drives in 2 runs with a single, 5-2 UConn.

Top 10th, a 1 out Huber walk loads the bases again for UConn. No more runs come in, but the damage has been done. 5-2 UConn.

Justin Willis in to pitch for UConn.

Penders mentioned Smith in the postgame. He was pretty angry during the game when it happened. Pretty calm coach but he was pissed at the time

No.15 HookC Rallies, Beats Northeastern in Extras, 5-2

-> Game Notes
  • Head coach Jim Penders is 13-0 against Northeastern in Brookline, Mass as a student-athlete, assistant and head coach.
  • UConn has won 11 in a row at Northeastern with the last loss coming in 1996.
  • The Huskies are 4-0 in extra inning games with all four ending in the 10th inning.
  • Tuesday was the second time that the Huskies won this season when trailing entering the seventh. <-

For fans, a win wire to wire alleviates stress. For a team, constructing different ways of winning games builds on a winning mentality and a never say die attitude. Even though, we have struggled over the last four games, we have gone 3 and 1 with a major facet not functioning well. This bodes well for tournament time.

Coach Penders says they didn't play UConn Husky baseball for the first 6 innings. The David Smith play of not running to 1B on the strikeout is held out as a prime example by Penders.

Penders also gave a mention to Devin Kirby's inning. That's the second game in a row he has had a good pitching outing in a tight game. I wonder if we will be seeing more of Kirby in similar situations, it wouldn't surprise me if we do.

Kirby was good after looking shaky w his first batter. He has good stuff
Good results, but a jerky jerky type motion. I'll take results over looks any day.

So did wang about 4-5 weeks ago bu we haven’t seen him since. Except on a milk bottle

A bit of a difference between Jimmy Wang and Devin Kirby. This is Jimmy Wang's fourth season with UConn baseball, while this is Kirby's first season with UConn where he is able to pitch (he redshirted last season due to injury).

Jimmy Wang had a 1 inning appearance at the end of the blowout win against Merrimack. While he pitched well, I don't get the idea that anything is really expected of him this season, although it wouldn't surprise me if pitches again in another lopsided game. After watching Wang in summer ball in Norwich last year, I certainly had lower expectations for what he might contribute to the UConn pitching staff this season, but sometimes you never know when these guys are going to surprise you.

Kirby has had 2 excellent outings in a row late in games where things were on the line. Unlike Wang, I get the idea that there were expectations by the coaching staff at the beginning of the season that Kirby could be a solid contributor to the UConn bullpen this season. However Kirby was coming back from injury at the beginning of the season and that would to appear to have held him back in his game appearances earlier in the year. Now he has had three excellent appearances in a row, and considering how he was used in the last 2 games, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he shows up again in late innings in a tight game.
