1 or 2 Seed Better?

Since Duke likely secured the 1 seed in the East with its win over Michigan….

Would you rather see us as a 2 seed in the East or a 1 seed in the South?

It’s a “pick your poison” situation either way, but Duke scares me. I’d rather avoid Duke until the Final 4, even if it means a road matchup in the Elite 8 with Houston.

Is Scheyer still coaching Duke? Then I'll take Duke as a potential Elite 8 matchup any day of the week (and twice on Sunday) just on its own.

But when weighed against having to play a potential team in the Elite 8 in their home state...it is not even a debate.

Want to hear an incredible factoid that I don't think people realize :

In the past 20 years, UConn has only lost two games after the first weekend of the tournament--and they were both us having to play a team in their home state/location.

In the last 35 years, UConn has only lost 8 games after the first weekend. Of those 8 total losses for UConn...6 of them were us having to play against a team in their home state/location.

So UConn essentially either blows it in the first weekend, gets stuck having to play an away game in the NCAA tournament, or wins the Championship. That is crazy to me.

Here are all of our NCAA losses in the past 35 years after the first weekend:

2009 vs Michigan State in Detroit, MI
2006 vs George Mason in Washington, DC
2003 vs Texas in San Antonio, TX
2002 vs Maryland in Syracuse, NY
1998 vs North Carolina in Greensboro, NC

Just saying regardless of seeding, come March we will always be the hunted and teams will check brackets to confirm and become relieved UConn is not in their bracket. And yes that includes every last team in the Tourney (except Creighton and SJU).

Was discussing a similar oddity with my son this weekend. We have not lost after the first weekend since losing to MSU in ‘09, 17 years ago. We have not lost in a regional (sweet 16 or elite 8) in 20 years.

Think of that. If we get through the first weekend, we haven’t been stopped short of the Final Four since George duck*ing Mason 20 years ago.

I would take that bracket in a heartbeat considering the alternatives. I want nothing to do with Florida in the Round of 16 (or frankly anywhere but the Final Four) and would prefer Iowa State to Houston if I had the choice. None of the other 3s or 4s scare me.

2-4 Teams I’d generally look to avoid are Illinois, Florida and Kansas, ironically.

I think Silas on Flemming would be a plus matchup.

1999 and 2004 no team scared me. In 2011 Cincinnati scared me. 2014 everybody scared me but I was confident vs Mich St. 2023, maybe Gonzaga. 2024 absolutely nobody scared me.

We take the 1 seed wherever. The gap between 2 and 3 seeds is much closer than 3 and 4. Give me TT or Vandy or UVA or Zags in the sweet 16. Duke is better than Houston and we’d have to play them in the final 4 anyways based on current seeding.

Agree, the kicker is that they'd likely have to beat us to get there. Can't have both.

I'd gladly swap to the 1 in that same region. I tend to think Florida will also be a 2 seed when it's all said and done, with one of Illinois or Purdue bumping out.

After seeing the reveal, I realized it’s probably unlikely we’d get the 2 in the East, because there are so many B1G and XII teams they have to avoid putting together. They can’t put their two outliers, us and Duke, in the same region except in some narrow circumstances.

I’m back on team “just win the stupid games and go get a 1 seed,” even if it’s in the South with Houston. As has been discussed, the 4s look particularly weaker than the 3s. And then, screw it, I’ll take our chances against Houston in the Elite Eight.

Good one. Fan since the mid 80’s, but Boneyarder a few years. Let me rephrase that I am not scared of Dook, but just think they are better than Houston.

Duke has an eerie feeling this year. Boozer may not be as overall talented as Flagg, but he has an aura about him that screams winning that feels contagious. They can really defend. Ngongba is an overall better player than Maluach. In some ways, I feel like this Duke is better built to win than last years team.

AZ would seem to be a worse matchup for them because they do have good guard at the 1/2.

Question - can anyone out of the top 4 seeds make a F4? St Johns? Arkansas is really talented and Cal did show up for the tourney last year.
