NCAA Provides Clarity But Not Finality For Roster Management • D1Baseball

The NCAA on Wednesday extended a COVID-era related roster blanket waiver that increases roster sizes, but it wasn't the finality that coaches are looking for.

<The NCAA on Wednesday approved yet another blanket waiver for Division I Baseball that pertains to some of the roster management challenges facing the sport. The governing body extended a COVID-related blanket waiver that expands the roster size from 35 to 40, increases the numbers of players on scholarship from 27 to 32 and allows for 40 official visits, up from the previous number of 25.>

<The other important topic that college baseball’s power brokers are expected to tackle in the coming months is the current redshirt rule. In football, a student athlete can appear in four games without blowing a year of eligibility. However, in baseball, a player loses eligibility for a year if he throws a single pitch or has a single at bat. The only caveat would be if the player suffers a season-ending injury the first 25 percent of the season. Baseball is not alone with this frustration, as legendary Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo, earlier this week, questioned the difference between basketball and football’s redshirt rules.

Currently, student athletes can compete in 36% of the football season without burning a year of eligibility. Should the NCAA eventually make that equivalency the same for baseball that would mean that a baseball player could play in 20 games of a 56-game season and still not lose their eligibility.>

As always, looking forward to the coming season. It seems that Luke Broadhurst and T.C. Simmons were nursing injuries during fall ball (both are personal favorites of mine), so it will be interesting to see how they get used in the coming season. Before fall ball started, I was thinking that Broadhurst could see time at both 3B and 1B in the coming season, and that Simmons would be the likely starter in CF. Drew Kron seems to have done quite well out in CF during fall ball in place of the injured Simmons, Padilla ended up getting playing time at 3B during fall ball, and it seems that Dalena did well at 1B during fall ball. Also have to think that Matt Malcom might get some time at DH when is isn't catching as well. Nice depth at the catcher spot with Garbowski, Malcom, and team captain Ryan Hyde.

Judging from the South Florida schedule posed above, UConn will play Indiana State on Saturday, Feb. 17, and will play Louisville on Sunday, Feb 18.

USF baseball website is showing the game with UConn as having a 6pm start time.

For me this opening game of the season is going to conflict with a UConn women's basketball game that night taking place at Gampel.
