Update on Jordan McLaughlin

Jordan McLaughlin is another electric point guard that UConn and their fans are used to. With the most recent electric point guard to leave UConn leading them to their third national championship. Everyone knows it was Kemba Walker. Now UConn has a couple more in Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright. They are looking to lead UConn to the NCAA Tournament and hopefully to another championship. The rich guard history was the first thing McLaughlin mentioned for what makes UConn an attractive school to him. He said, “They have good guard play year in and year out, good winning history, good coach, and good style of play”

However, the next electric point guard for UConn is still up in the air and the 6’0″ 170lbs McLaughlin could be UConn’s next great point guard. He describes himself as an, “Atheltic, could score, also about setting up others, gets after it on defense, and plays hard,” point guard. Despite being a top 20 player in his class he still feels that parts of his game need more work so he can get better. Among the areas he says that need work are, “Getting stronger, defense, shooting, ball handling, and posting up.”

Jordan McLaughlin also has an idea in what he wants his college coach to be like. He want his coach to have a, “Winning background, fast style of play, ball screens, and has good experience with guards.” That fits head coach Kevin Ollie perfectly. As many people know he was a point guard himself for UConn. Therefore, Ollie knows what point guards want and he knows how to get it done not only on the college level, but in the NBA. One thing the staff has been telling him is that the way he plays fits the way they want to play.

We then went on to talk recruiting. He’s had a final eight for sometime and the eight schools are UConn, USC, UCLA, SDSU, UNLV, Gonzaga, Kansas, and Indiana. Out of those schools he currently has, “No favorites and the local schools are recruiting me the hardest.” He’s been saying that for a while now but he recently told Rivals that UConn, Kansas, and Indiana were starting to pick up their efforts. Currently he has no visits scheduled but he, “Most likely will,” visit UConn, Kansas, and Indiana officially due to their locations. Currently McLaughlin also has no timetable for his recruitment and a decision. I also asked him if he looked for coaches during the live periods. He responded by saying, “No I don’t like to look on the baseline. I like to just play my game.” It’s nice to see a recruit say that. From here everyone should look to see him schedule visits and take the time he needs for a commitment.
