Huskies Picked To Finish 7th in The American

The 2013 American Athletic Conference Summer Football Kickoff conclude on Tuesday and the University of Connecticut was picked seventh of ten teams in the league’s preseason poll.

Coaches and players from the 10 American Athletic Conference schools converged on Newport, R.I., for the popular event.

In addition to head coach Paul Pasqualoni, UConn was represented by junior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.), junior offensive guard Steve Greene (Edensberg, Pa.) and junior cornerback Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.).

On Monday, the league hosted its annual golf outing for at Newport National Golf Club for coaches, media, school officials and bowl representatives. Later on the Monday night,

The American played host to the most famous media day event among any league in the country – a traditional New England clambake at Fort Adams State Park.

The centerpiece of the conference’s coverage on Tuesday was a live, three-hour program featuring in-depth analysis and interviews with coaches and players, which is now available in an archived format. In addition, an archive of Commissioner Mike Aresco’s opening remarks and each coach’s question-and-answer session at the podium was available on ESPN3 and is now archived. The show was hosted by John Rooke and Pete Brock.

In the preseason poll, with 14 starters returning from a team that went 11-2 and won the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Louisville was tabbed as the overwhelming favorite to win the first American Athletic Conference football title in the conference’s first preseason media poll. The Cardinals received 28 of a possible 30 first-place votes and had 298 points in the preseason voting of media representatives.

Cincinnati received the other two first-place votes and had 257 points. The top five teams in the preseason poll either won or shared their league’s regular-season championship last season.
