Anthony Sherman Making His Mark In The NFL

Who’s the best fullback in the NFL? If you’re a UConn fan, you’ve probably seen the guy in person at Rentschler Field – and he wasn’t playing for the other team. Anthony Sherman, now of the Kansas City Chiefs, was rated the number 1 fullback by Pro Football Focus a service that “…watches over a combined 400 hours of football [each week] to ensure we know who the best players are. It makes us the premier outfit in player evaluation, used by NFL teams and fans alike to understand which guys are getting the job done and which guys aren’t.”

Sherman, aka the Shermanator, was taken in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL draft by Arizona. After two seasons, he was traded to Kansas City where he’s impressed fans, coaches, and media alike.

The trade to Kansas City wasn’t because Sherman wasn’t getting the job done there. In fact, he was named captain of the Cardinals’ special teams unit. It was just that Arizona’s new head coach, Bruce Arians, installed a new offense that had no use for a fullback.

“I have not been a fullback guy — never have been,” Arians said shortly after joining the Cardinals.

Hence the trade to Kansas City in exchange for cornerback Javier Arenas. The Chiefs may have gotten the better of the deal, though, as Arenas has seen his stats decrease this season and has had 3 tackles in 6 games to date.

Sherman has been playing with an unspecified knee injury and is on the injury list for the third consecutive week but is listed as Probable for Sunday’s matchup with Houston.
