Tayshana Murphy, 18, was shot and killed while running from the gunman, police say.
A high school basketball star was fatally shot in the head inside a Manhattan housing project Sunday morning in a slaying her family believes was a tragic case of mistaken identity.
Tayshana Murphy, 18, one of the top-rated basketball players in the country, was killed in Harlem's Grant Houses at about 4:10 a.m., police said.
She was trying to outrun a gunman in a fourth-floor hallway of the building where she lives, witnesses said.
"She was pleading for her life," said friend Teka Taylor, 22, who was with Murphy when the violence erupted.
"She was saying 'No, please, I don't have nothing to do with it.'"
Murphy, known on the courts by her nickname Chicken, had on Thursday started her senior year at Murry Bergtraum High School for Business Careers on a basketball scholarship. Several colleges were actively recruiting her.

So often a fight leads to lethal force either during the fight or after, in retaliation. That is the kind of fight no body wins. So many lives forever changed by one senseless act of violence. There was a day when getting in a fight meant you had a few bruises, maybe a cut or black eye. Now, you so much as look as someone funny or say the wrong thing and your life may hang in the balance. It is so sad.

Prayers going out to this young woman and her family.

The terrible reality is that there is a lot of violence in inner-city New York, and a lot of young people are being killed. The gun violence in the inner-city neighborhoods of NYC is worse now than any time I can remember in the last 20+ years. Every shooting death is tragic, and in this case especially so not only because she was a victim of mistaken identity but also because she had so much to look forward to in life. RIP, Tayshana.

“Her brother’s like a psycho, and she comes running out to protect her brother,” said cousin Pierre Walton, 21. Tayshana Murphy had two previous arrests that were sealed and another for third-degree assault in July. And she was forced to leave Bishop Loughlin HS in Brooklyn last year after a fight with a 15-year-old girl.

One of the most interesting - and overlooked - sidelights into the Piph Prince issue regarding someone being beaten up was a comment printed in a local newspaper in NJ. According to one of the other players, they had asked her about it and her answer was very revealing - something along the lines of "I don't know why this case is such a big deal, it happens all the time [in that neighborhood]". Also revealing at least partly why she turned pro early to get her family "out".
