I'm not a fan of bringing transfers. UConn always has a very high quality of player and I am not convinced the players they bring in really make too much of a difference. Now when they had all the injuries I think it helped for sure but it could be argued the players brought in the last two years have been good players but adding them really just kept the team from developing players with similar skills they already had on the roster.

I know everyone is doing it but in my mind UConn isn't every other team.
 
Respectfully disagree. The portal players of the past several years have been valuable additions. If Geno feels the current portal players are not worthy of consideration, so be it.

Really not busy at all. There are 1565 players in the portal so not even 2 messages per player!!! /sarc for those with a detector lacking.

Once again, the transferring of basketball players seems way out of line for general transfers of college students.

Times have changed and if you don't take good players from the portal you will fall behind ! Uconn is facing that this year if they don't bring in a couple of more players.
 
Maybe Uconn doesn't have/want to pay these players? This entire NIL Money and portal stuff is getting ridiculous.

I heard A. Crooks just received $1.4 million for transferring.

College sports is being ruined by this. Just my opinion.

I will bet that Geno hates this whole system.

Geno did not identify anyone that he could bring in from the portal to help
the Huskies in 26-27. I was hoping that Skylar Forbes would make the grade,
as I believed that she could have helped Uconn. Yet, I believe that she went to
W. Virginia. Oh well! We end up with no one from the portal. Time will tell?
A quick guard and big forward might have helped.......

quick guard = yovanna plus K9 and kk; likely that kelice would qualify, and maybe morgan if u mean quickness without real speed

big foward = sarah, blanca, backed by olivia; jana and - who knows - gandy

think uconn is well-stocked in these areas, perhaps?

besides, adding unknowns could be harmful. showing lack of confidence in your current crew certainly is problematic.

Come to think of it, paying players to come to Uconn is the last thing Geno wants to do.

I read an interview with Dawn Staley and she was outraged at what college basketball has become.

She said " The first question she is asked by a potential recruit is how much money will I get if I come to South Carolina" ...

I just can't see Geno playing this game.
 
Coaches get paid huge bonuses for being successful so why shouldn't the players also get huge bonuses for chosing a school where they sacrifice their health & well being?
Here it is years after the NIL was institutionalized and folks are still grumbling about not accepting it.
NIL may or may not help to win championships but the money earned surely helps players accept their lifelong injuries with a little more comfort.
Many schools and employees profit from the game, so complaining isn't really valid when the laws clearly allow NIL for good reasons which are a lot like civil rights for athletes.
Fans love watching the games on for profit TV but they still endlessly complain.
There used to be an old saying, "If you don't like it then lump it."
In other words it means to go jump in a lake rather than to complain about it which does no good.
NIL is here to stay and many of us support the players civil & human rights because that's how justice works.
They players have collectively paid the price of admission so get used to it.

I don't think the issue most people have is that players are getting NIL. The issue is if the players primary goal is maximizing their earnings as opposed to developing their skill set and helping their teams win championships those aren't the type of players Geno wants on his team.
We all work jobs to get paid. But if the first question we ask our prospective employer is "so how much are you going to pay me?", how eager do you think they will be to hire you?

Let's not forget the prospective freshmen are high school kids (grades 9 - 12) in the throws of puberty, with the top kids being manipulating by agents looking to earn big $$$. The whole situation stinks. I don't know what the right solution is, I'm pretty sure where we are now isn't it.

Maybe not quite as bad for portal people, they are a couple of years older, but still not good.

And I always thought going to "college" was about getting an "education" not about making millions because you can put an orange ball through a hole. Or because you can throw a football 70 yards. They also receive free tuition and room and board, whereas the other 40,000 students on campus have to pay.

Or how about the academically good students who may not be able to get into their school of choice because there only so many students accepted and the 350lb Offensive tackle with the 1.2 GPA gets in first?

But hey, this is just my opinion.

Btw,

For the record, I dont think A.Cooks is worth 1.4 million dollars. I also dont think the Miami Hurricanes next Quarterback is worth 6 million dollars to play college sports.

As soon as any player signs any type of monetary contract they should no longer be considered "amateur" .

Agreed, but where in the world does "amateur" mean anything anymore? The Olympics doesn't care. World championships in every sport include pros. I agree the whole thing sucks. Academics are irrelevant now, and it's a shame that some kids won;t get accepted or get some scholarship help they might have once received. I also agree with those who think the agents are the real bad guys in the scene. Pushing kids for quick bucks is a long-term loss. Let's face it...most of the kids in the portal right now peaked in high school...their careers are done.

Look at what Uconn is paying Mullins.

UConn is preparing a massive NIL package for sophomore guard Braylon Mullins worth an estimated $4–5 million annually to retain him for the 2026-2027 season. This deal is designed to match the projected rookie salary Mullins would have earned as a projected 2026 NBA Draft first-round

How many people actually think Mullins is going to stay 3 more years and get his "education" ? Zero chance.

I agree that these agents are horrible people but so is the NCAA itself.

Hurley said that Mullins might be able to make more money staying at UConn than going to the NBA as a late 1st round draft pick. That's how bad it is. If there's any silver lining, NIL might slow the exodus to the NBA, WNBA.

Not sure how NIL slows the exodus to the WNBA in comparison to the NBA considering the current rules with respect to declaring early.

5th year and older seniors. I think we already have many examples of 5th year players staying in college versus entering the draft. Azzi? Paige?
