Not really! The shorter player used her lower center of gravity to move the taller one off her postition. She basically undercut her. The taller player had poor postioning skills which allowed the shorter player to take the advantage. Griner also was never taught proprer skills as well. You widen your stance and lower your center of gravity. Even in the outside postition, the taller player could have used her leg length to her advantage by creating extended pivot points to spin around the shorter player. People need to watch the centers in the fifties and sixties in how they created space and leverage for themselves. That seems to be a skill that is lost due to the elimination of the traditional center postition in the NBA and mens basketball.

I think many high school bigs never get to the point where boxing out is automatic and instinctive, because they are so much bigger than the players they are matched up against, they don't need to. As the competition takes a major jump in college, they can't get away with that anymore against far bigger and more talented players.

In recent memory Nika was particularly good at boxing out, but it's a shame how many bigs never do it well, or develop good habits many years after they have been playing.

The bigger kid could have been called for over the back but the refs let them play on
True but in most cases today seems officials are now over focusing on and looking for over the back calls. The OTB call is something if you look at coaches on the sidelines they are always in the ear of the refs about.

The art of boxing out has not changed in decades. Get them on your butt and keep them there.

But notice how teams, for a while now, go to slap or tap or hit the ball out of the lane to their guards. Marquette did that well yesterday.

That is a great box out. She can keep the player from moving toward her but she can't push her back with her rear any more than the other player can push her in the back. Either way it is a play or even a foul the coach could live with.

It's interesting to hear how many times in a game that the name Shade and the words "box out": occur together. At least a couple of times in each game lately, I seem to recall.

Shade is one of those Indiana "fundamentalists". Kind of reminds me of Imnu.

Interesting post. I noticed something the last 3 games on this topic. While the Huskies are almost all solid at boxing out, Sarah and Paige are some of the only ones that release quickly to go after the ball. If you look back in time, some of our best rebounders such as Gabby Williams and Napheesa Collier, weren't the tallest but they seemed to instinctively know where the rebound was going and athletic and quick enough to get there before their competitor could. Some games it seems like every long rebound goes over UConn's head since some hold their position too long.

Was going to write the same thing. Shade is one of the best at boxing out but worst at releasing.

Off topic slightly but I wish Ice would worry less about the refs calling her for a foul and not stand for a second or two with her arms straight up after the player she's defending shoots. She misses the opportunity to turn and rebound.
