Some thoughts on the Xavier game:
  • Congratulations to Aaliyah for earning a spot among the HOH. She is the epitome of what UConn does, taking a really good player and turn them into a great player.
  • Pretty uneven start for the Huskies...a little sloppy....missing their first 10 shots from the arc, until Allie took the lid off the basket and then caught fire with a career game going 10/14 from the arc, scoring 34 for the game. 😮
  • Ash was all over the court, filling up the stat sheet with 12 pts, 6 rebounds, 6 assists & 9 steals.
  • I really like that UConn was consistently getting the ball to Sarah in the middle of the zone, where she is money!!!
  • I know many of us wondered whether a 15-player roster was too many. Today, the Huskies had only 9 players available.
  • Maybe the biggest surprise today was Azzi missing a FT after making 40 in a row, which presaged a pretty tough shooting night for one of the best shooters in the country.
  • As for DEFENSE, not too bad, as the Huskies held Xavier to 39 points, forcing 34 turnovers with 22 steals.
  • Next up are the Lady Vols, who are currently in 1st place, undefeated in the SEC. GO HUSKIES!!!

After the first quarter, that was a really fun game.
  • Coming out party for Allie - not only POG, but Badass as well. She drained a bunch of 3's in Q2 after we struggled in Q1
  • For 30 minutes the defense was elite. 22 points in 30 minutes after Q1
  • Another stat stuffing game for Sarah. NPOY!
  • Ash, KK and Kayleigh were really solid, especially KK, and Kayleigh had 6 points, 8 boards, and 8 assists
  • Jana showed some stuff, but the missed bunnies were ugh...
The offensive foul call is one of the worst and misused calls in the game. Numerous offensive fouls were the wrong call IMHO. Having said that, the rest of the game was reffed well IMHO. I thought Xavier was lazy or unaware of UConn's defense many times as a player came around the blind side to rip the ball away. I was not thrilled with that overly physical play by the Xavier kid on Shade in Q1.

It was great seeing Aaliyah go up on the wall and it was a nice interview with her during the game. Her stories about Geno and Azzi were classic!

Bottom line a really solid effort for 30 minutes missing 2 key players. I hope they are ok for Tennessee because we will need them...

This was Allie's night. What else is there to say. Lots of other great performances, but 10 3 ptrs is really something. Go Allie.

The other usual suspects were pretty awesome too. Kayleigh was tough as nails. Ash Was everywhere. And Sarah was a rock the team could rest on when necessary.

And another lesson in lineup construction: What do you do if you don't have 2 main rotation players? Easy. Ash plays 36 minutes, Allie plays 29, and Kayleigh plays 25. Problem solved.

Some gaudy numbers here!

Was 34 points the most a player has scored in a single game this year, regardless, what a shooting night for Ziebell. K9 with eight rebounds and eight assists and only one turnover. Ash is Ash.

Who had AZ shooting 10 for 14, and Azzi shooting 1 for 7 from three on their Bingo card?
It was the most scored in a single game this year. Elite air with Katie Lou, Kalena M-L and Maya with 10 3's

Early on in the game the commentators made a remark that this game against Xavier probably wouldn’t turn out with a score quite so similar to the last time these two teams played. That was before Allie decided to get blazing, white hot from the arc!!

Who would have thought she’d be the leading scorer for this game AND the one with the most three point shots made? Congrats Allie on entering rarified Husky air!!

Also have to shout out Heckel tonight. She was hustling and scraping all game, everywhere on the floor, and while most things she did won’t show up on the stat sheet, her defense and intensity was VERY impressive.

Allie tells the world who she is! Given the kinks in the line up I'm shocked at how normal it all looked in the end. I think we can now state with some confidence anyone who wants to beat UConn better show up with 100 points in their bag.

Quarters 2. 3. 4 were a clinic. Allie was absolutely sensational, and demonstrated why she was 2x Wisconsin player of the year. Strong was her usual - just so consistently good. Heckel did her best impression of Shade, who did her best impression of Heckel. Those two are the horsepower that drove the engine tonight. KK was solid as usual on offense and defense. Some good minutes from Jana, who just misses too many close up. Did anyone notice how Caroline was keeping Jana cool after she was angry for coming out after missing an easy one? Azzi, well, if was an off night, although I think she is pressing and rushing her shots!
