Xavier Post Game Thread

We ran plenty of good sets over the course of the season. The shots are just finally falling. But you can’t tell me two games ago we couldn’t win a natty and now we can all of a sudden, which is what the analytics say.
What the analytics were saying was that playing like we were two games ago we couldn't win a national championship. And that is true: if we played like we played against Providence or Villanova, we'd be knocked out in the second round.

If anyone caught the post game press conference with Hurley, was he insinuating that there are issues with Reibe and his people not being thrilled about his playing time?
I haven't listened yet but isn't this the role he came here for? Did he really think he was starting over Reed? Or did he think they would split the 40 minutes evenly? Due to Reed's early season injury he got a lot of run early which helped him. Maybe Clingan's family needs to have a discussion with Reibe's family if they really have an issue.

That would be really strange for Hurley to divulge something like that. Doesn't sound like something he would do.

I just listened to some talk about Reibe and I didn't get that sense. Unless it came later.

He talks about Clingan really buying into his role, and he hopes Reibe does the same. I didn't catch anything about his people not being happy.

He did, however, talk about laying into Stewart and Ross 2 games ago for not being aggressive enough, which is interesting on about 50 different levels.

Sure sounded like it when Dan Hurley mentioned how Dc and family saw the big picture and it worked out ok for DC.

Yeah. That's exactly how I read it. So that's probably going on.
However, It would feel way more troubling if we didn't have a final four type team. The best recruitng/retention tool has to be "hey, do you want to come back next year and start for the defending national champions?"
Who's gonna say "nah, I think I'll get more eyeballs at Ole Miss"

clear difference in both Ross/Stew's approach the last 2 games after that Providence game when it looked like a grenade was in their hands whenever they touched it. Stew couldn't get his shots to drop tonight but at least like that he was looking to shoot and take it to the basket, he's gotta figure out a plan when he gets in the air though

It was quite the answer to how he’s “settling in” here. Basically the insinuation is that he knew he had complete buy in from his last extremely talented backup center, and at bare minimum isn’t sure if Reibe (or his support system) has that same level of buy in.

What I have a hard time believing, is that Reibe didn’t know the deal coming in. Makes me think Dan is probably referring to someone in his circle nagging for more PT, and hopefully publicly reminding them of how well it worked out for Clingan will ease their concern. Reibe playing pretty well when Reed was out might’ve adjusted expectations for PT in his circle.

Not much to be upset about, other than the ridiculous flagrant call and the even more ridiculous people defending it.
The thing that surprise me was that you can call a flagrant in a review to determine out of bounds possession.

No, that's not remotely true. The analytics did not say that

That’s not what I took away
What was the question that was asked?

I didn't get the sense that he or his family are disgruntled about his PT. He's logged 21, 19 and 17 the last 3 games, while Reed Jr who's a senior logged 19, 21 and 22. Maybe he wants more, but what competive kid wouldn't want play more.

Sometimes Hurley says stuff that people just want to read into it. Reibe's body language doesn't seem to support this conspiracy theory.

Geez! We just had a 30+ blowout and this is what this thread is morphing into!

I'll chime in here. The Analytics aren't saying anything other than stacking teams up one ahead of the other based on a set of metrics.

As for the eye test, the way they were executing their half court offense ineffectively for long stretches in January and not shooting the ball all that well both beyond the arc and at the rim, were pointing to a team that was not looking like a team that could win the national championship playing like that. In fact coach Hurley himself said that after a few of these games.

But the players, coaching staff and many of the fans know that this team is capable of playing much better, which they have the past two games, and are plenty talented to cut down the nets when it's all said and done. If they continue to play like the way they did these past two games, their metrics will improve, as will their seeding if they continue to win, and other teams near the top end up beating each other.

There are a few teams that are very capable of winning it all , and UConn is among them, especially if they execute the way they did on both ends of the floor and score at the high level they showed tonight.

People put way too much stock in the metrics. I wonder what our metrics looked like during the season when we lost a slew of January games but went on to win the championship in 2023. I don't think many people were saying at the end of January that this is a team that is capable of winning the championship.

Analytics don’t count for missed open shots. We ran good O. We have finally started making open shots.
I agree with that, and as a result our offensive efficiency is going up. What I'm saying is our previous offensive efficiency was by no means prohibitive of winning for all the reasons you just said

Just got home from the game. Why was the student section so anemic tonight? Are they on break?
It’s been a trend. I don’t get it. Seems like the students just aren’t that into UConn basketball like they used to be. I could make excuses about he cold weather or playing teams we are expected to beat but that wouldn’t have stopped them in the past. 22-1. 12-0. #3 in the country. Smh
Also noticed Hurley has stopped asking the crowd to get into it more.
I think he’s accepted that at least for now, the Kansas ,BYU Duke type crowd energy ain’t happening.

I don’t like Solo’s shot selection most games. He’s forcing and missing. However, I loved his last two plays of the game. He could have easily forced two more shots, which wouldn’t even have been bad shots. Instead, he passed to his teammates and got two nice assists. Donny basically said the same thing. Great overall performance by the team. Might be the first ever Big East team to go undefeated in conference play.
Solo is a good all around player. I don’t mind his shot selection, but there are lot of good players on this team and he doesn’t have to take all the shots he takes. Both Reed and Reibe shoot at a high percentage and that should be priority over a Ball shot. Demary is very good at creating something out of nothing, and when nothing is happening I would like to see Demary take over rather than Ball, but Ball is a good plan B. I like it when Solo drives, and I like when the other team zones and he flashes to FT elbow and makes that shot. Ball is a great zone buster. He needs to shoot the 3P at 33% plus or he shouldn’t take them. He should be easily able to make that mark, given his form and shot selection, but if he doesn’t, it hurts the team.

He has rebounded like a champ last 2 games.

A bit surprised KP offense only moved up a spot or two. Pre creighton I think we were 41ish and jumped a bunch to maybe 28 or so.

Given the outstanding offense today I would have expected a bigger jump at least closer to low 20s.

Maybe the teams were just more bunched up in the 40-30 range than they are in the 30-20 range.
