Xavier Post Game Thread

4/9 until the desperation heaves. I was wrong about Andre, and I'm happy to admit it

We love you Dan Hurley! We all accept Dan Hurley as who he is, but he needs to know whenever he lets his emotions gets the better of him, nothing good will happen. In all honesty, I’d rather this happened in December than in March.

I'm happy Dan Hurley pushed for the technical. Refs needed a louder in-game message to highlight the free throw disparity. Just asked for it 2-3 minutes too late.

Xavier should get credit for their offensive performance. An older, highly disciplined team that consistently takes the right shot. End of the day, we have more talent and should've won.

Tough matchup for Sanogo. Newton is slowly fading into the background in conference play. Hopefully, he figures it out.

Played a grind it out game in tough environment. The opponents shot the lights out. The foul situation was unbalanced. It takes the pressure of being undefeated away. It gives Hurley stuff to work on and will make the players focus a little sharper.

In the big picture, it means very little. A very winnable game if they take care of details. Danny seemed to be hunting that technical, almost like he wanted it.
Hopefully Hurley can take it as a learning experience too. He can take some responsibility for a stupid T.

.-.
Pretty terrible game for everyone not named Andre Jackson, and as a few people have said the subs were subpar. I think a lot of that is having no options other than Karaban at the 4, so Samson will help there. Hopefully this is the wakeup call the team needed that they won't just coast through the season

Not great D, turnovers and couldn’t make big shots down the stretch today. It happens…you either win or learn.

Have a Happy New Year!

I was hoping to get to this game undefeated once it looked like we might for this reason. Taking the L on the road against a good conference opponent isn't going to kill you.
The tech by Hurley was embarrassing. Terrible to get that at that point in the game. It energized their crowd and UConn played with the same loss of composure their coach showed the rest of the way. That part was very disappointing.

I’m not saying this is ok by any means because it’s not ok. I say that because when you say it’s okay then you won’t get better.

We got outplayed and out coached it happens. We’ll have a hungrier team that should be sharper from this game. Going back to the drawing board, let’s not lose sight of the big picture.

I still think we're the best team in the nation. It's just that we're still learning how to prove it.

Also we're still learning how to play together. This squad has never faced adversity like they did today.

We will be fine, this road loss changes nothing about my expectation of winning the BE crown.

Clingan needs to play more, specifically when a team has 2 bigs that play like freemantle and nunge do.

Karaban got absolutely lit up on defense all game and clearly teams have ID'd that on tape and are gameplanning for it. Becoming a clear problem with the first couple Big East games. Too small to reliably play bigs tough, too slow to keep up with guards on the perimeter in space.

With that said, we lost to a top 15ish team on the road who shot the lights out and had a 26-9 free throw advantage.

Not going to make too much of it, just need to adjust better

Just commented on Tristan in another chat. But do we hand diarra the keys? Risk his spark? Will newton be able to provide a lift if our 2nd line which is based on speed and mayhem (sans dc)? Bring alleyne back?

I agree with the foul disparity, but it was also somewhat of a product of all the threes being shot.

I feel like BE play started we are not getting downhill as much as we need to. I am fine with the open shots, even Jackson’s, but we need to drive more to create fouls.

No answer for Freemantle and Hunter.. "House whistle" by the refs.. AJax had a great floor game.. Needed our shooters shooting in last ten minutes--Gotta be able to get open... Can't give up 4 pts with the T ..Momentum changer..

Learn from film and get ready for PC..

Do we really need multiple anti Hurley threads? Come on guys. We're better than that. Look at the box score. We missed a lot of shots (41%) and they made a lot of shots (53%). It's not rocket science. We're going to get everybody's best shot especially in their building. We lost to a ranked team that played very well. Let's accept it and not hammer our coach or the refs. (Well hammer the refs a little - LOL)

I suspect we will see Xavier 2 more times. Have to get the next 2

The foul call on Newton that led to the Hurley technical was egregious. He got the ball clean twice in a row. Love Hurley, but he can't lose his composure there. I'm curious what he did or said. I don't think they showed a replay of Hurley reacting.

This should be a fun one.

I could fill a novel with my thoughts on this one but I'll try to limit them to 3 -
  1. Sanogo was unstoppable. Whoever Sanogo was guarding was also unstoppable. Hurley needs to immediately figure out pick and roll defense with Sanogo. DC doesn't have this problem (yes I know he's 7'2)
  2. Our roster is meant to wear teams out and we have a super deep bench. Diarra, Clingan, and Alleyne were playing very well while Newton and Karaban were playing very poorly. The adjustments that had to be made were not made
  3. Karaban is getting very tired. He needs to be a situational PF because he gets abused on defense against big or strong 4s. When he's a traffic cone on defense and is being used as a spot up shooter but cant make a shot, he's got no business being out there. I get that this isn't his fault because Samson is injured, but he was a net negative after the first few minutes
Credit to Xavier, they played a great game. 54% shooting and 23-28 from the line. In the last 5-7 minutes I saw some questionable calls. But before that, I thought it was fine. We took 37 threes tonight, 55% of all FGs. Hard to get to the line when you take 37 threes

I I am not l aiming this loss on that technical.
Not a surprising loss, should have played clingan more.
I am sure that all of us who follow UCONN an come up with what Hurley should have done. I expect Hurley, coaching staff, and team will learn from this loss. Did anyone really expect a no loss perfect season?

Sean Miller just picked apart Hurleys Defense. They shot 54 percent.

We have no guards who can drive and score like Daniels of Nova or Boum or Jones of X. Newton and Jackson drive and always look to pass not score. X was waiting for the pass.

That TECH on Hurley deflated UCONN’s ballon a bit but they just could not get it together today. What was that TECH for??
I had A LOT of issues with the refs today but that T was on Hurley and it was stupid. He’s the coach. He’s got to know the situation and keep it together.

At the end of the day, we weren’t going undefeated and this was the most likely loss. On to the next one.

Yes, the officials were bad, yes Hurley got a T to more or less put the game out of reach... but we were already losing.

And that's because our execution was just not good enough in the last 10 minutes of the game.

08:09 - We're just passing the ball on the perimeter and Newton makes a sloppy hospital pass that's picked off and leads directly to a layup and we go down 4.
05:48 - We got a rebound, pushing the pace. Newton lobs a ball into Sanogo on the move. He makes a nice catch. The D swarms, and he looks for open guys but sees nobody. Ends up just kinda losing the ball in an attempt to do something.
04:21 - Newton drives to the lane, has an opening that gets cut off by help. Instead of finding the guy the help was coming from, he throws a pass to nobody into the 2nd row.
03:54 - We get a steal. Defense leads to offense. Hawkins has the ball attacking the rim. Instead of drawing a foul, gets called for an offensive push-off when attacking multiple guys.

Around these plays, Jackson made a few nice plays. We were still in the game. But this was where our run should have been. This was the last 10 min run, but instead we made some bone-headed plays and that's the difference in close games on the road.
