I think we can take encouragement in this: Calhoun has never lost in the first round when he's had a whole team (I don't count 2008 because AJ got hurt). In JC I trust. Bring on Iowa St and UK.

if we were to beat Kentucky that alone would make my season

Mine too, but the odds are clearly against that assuming we advance to that game. Of course, this is a perfect JC "us against the world" scenario, so stay tuned.

i watched kentucky today and what stuck out to me as potential weaknesses is:

free throws in the clutch
inexperience and lack of depth at pg
forget to get it in the post and get too perimiter oriented
their pg is a terrrible defender is going to have serious problems with boat and bazz.

if we get past iowa st. uk is going to get all it can handle from us. if we play as well as we did in the be tourney for stretches.

Seth Davis picking UK to win it all. Slight boost to our mojo, right?

Take out the word 'Kentucky' and replace it with 'UCONN' and you could be describing us. If they have the same weaknesses as us and they are 31-2 and we are 20-13, I wouldn't call these weaknesses for them in a head-to-head match-up.

Iowa State did manage wins over Baylor and Kansas (both in Ames), but they were also 1-2 against a crappy Texas team. They're not pushovers by any means, but Uconn is far more talented. Then again, UConn's lost to a lot of teams it's more talented than this season.

If UConn plays like it did these past two times against Cuse, they should make it to the second round. Beating Kentucky in the Bluegrass State is a tall order, but anything can happen in single elimination.

Anyway, can't do anything about it, so might as well sit back and enjoy. As was mentioned above, there was a point where it was not entirely clear that UConn would even be in the tourney at all.

Bad news: This is the worst possible draw UConn could have possibly gotten if they intended on getting to the sweet 16. Iowa State is a very good team, and considering we'll be playing in Kentucky, I'm sure 90% of the people in that arena will be rooting for ISU. If we do happen to win that tough first round game, we play the consensus #1 team in the country in about as close to a true road game as you can get.

Good news: First of all, we get to see Kentucky fans squirm over these next couple days as they thing about the possibility of playing one of the ten most talented teams in the country. Calipari couldn't have been very happy when he saw a potential date with the defending champs looming in the second round. This has been a disappointing season, but IMO, all that disappointment can be erased with two wins in the NCAA tournament. The thought of taking Calipari's best team ever out before the second weekend is enough to make me dance across the Brooklyn Bridge.

I checked the link to the Iowa State board linked in a different post. They're not too happy to be playing us and possibly Kentucky. Their fans did not sound too optimistic but then again they have not seen our crappy three point defense. We will definitely need to play our guards more and Calhoun must insist they stay on their man. No reach around steal attempts. The more ball movement the more open shots. If we play 2 forwards one should front their forward and the other should play behind him. He likes to pass he ball and they like to run their offense through him.

If they did win those two games, this bracket isn't that difficult.

It's the first time I can remember where getting out of the first two rounds will be more difficult than getting through S16-E8

Thought our 3-point defense went up a notch late in the year for whatever reason. We did a good job against Syracuse, although Southerland got loose for a couple (one was off an offensive rebound and the other was running Olander off a screen, which is not our ideal defensive set-up). Gibbs didn't kill us out there in the regular season finale, and WV hurt us on the offensive glass more than the 3-point line. Iowa State will probably be a little tougher to defend - we'll need to really guard out there at every position and not fall asleep.

against iowa state its simple. if iowa hits more than 10 threes and hits 40% plus we are finished. if we keep them under ten and under 35% and we win.

ill say this about ku. i see two teams that can knock them off before they get to new orleans. of course uconn in that second round game if we get past iowa st. and another team i see which could knock them off is baylor. jones III vs A.Davis could be epic! if im coach cal yes you take it one game at a time but those are the two teams that really tighten my sphincter.

Well this is also the first time in 20 years where we'd a serious underdog as early as the second round. The last time we were seeded lower than 5th (which is basically a tossup in the second round) was 1992 (also a 9-seed).

KU is Kansas, and isn't fond of being confused with UK, Calipari and the rest of those slimeballs (Ashley excluded).

When UConn beats Iowa State they will be playing Kentucky. In the last 108 match ups of 1 vs 16 it's 108-0. In 1 vs 8/9 2nd round matchups, last 108 games; the 8/9 seed has 14 wins.

UConn can beat Kentucky but they have to play to their full potential on both ends of the court.

Book it right now that we will beat Kentucky. That team is overrated and overhyped. I cant wait to see Jeremy on MKG . Drummond dunking on Davis, and Boat crossing Teague over. I cant wait for this, and I am sure Calhoun is savoring this. He will have our guys ready and playing as underdogs from round 1 will serve us well.
