I didn't like the phrasing, but years ago coach Stringer made a comment about playing for scraps when you want a seat at the table (or something along those lines). She refused any lower tourneys until Rutgers made her go; in the end, Rutgers won the WNIT in 2014.
And that was when the WNIT meant something, before the WBIT. Only one Power 4 conference school in the WNIT, Wake Forest which is 3 games under .500 (WNIT can go pretty low to fill their field).
For some its pride, some its state of the program, finances, or a lot of other factors. That said, theory said that more games improved the next year. Of course, that was before the portal.
