WNBA transactions

Dallas Wings site shows roster down to 12 - no Karlie :(
Minnesota showing 13 - Crystal OK so far.
Liberty showing they're down to 12 - MW OK (and apparently Sabrina Ionescu made the team).
Several teams showing fewer than 11 players.

CT - 11
ATL - 12 including Tiffany & Renee
PHX - 11 including Bria Hartley
CHI - 11 including Hebard and Azurá
IND - 13
SEA - 12 including Tuck
LV - 11 including Swords (apparently not officially retired)
Wash - 11

Lynx get down to 12 by placing forward Jessica Shepard on the team’s full season suspended list so Crystal makes the cut. I guess Shepard is not 100% ?

That's the only reason I can see that Shepard is not on the roster: when healthy, she was playing well within that system and probably would continue to do so. Now that I think about it, the injury happened less than a year ago, so maybe Reeve decided to "suspend" her and let her come back strong. Hopefully, that designation will give her some access to the team's training and resources.

Yes, that seems to be the case based on an article in the Star Tribune

Jessica Shepard, coming back from an ACL injury sustained early last season, will not play in the WNBA this year. She will officially be listed as suspended while staying in the Twin Cities and, when allowed in a summer affected by the coronavirus pandemic, will return to working on her rehab with the team's training staff.

I think karlie plays better defense though
I mean, she may play better defense ( I dont have an opinion on that ) but is it a significant difference? I dont think anyone is expecting either of them to be a defensive stopper. Katie Lou does everything Karlie can, but better. Why would you want to have the same type of player twice? Marina turned into a very good passer her last two seasons. I'm excited to see her and KLS play on the court together ( hopefully ). I could never imagine those two being on the same team.

Defense is needed though

Wow. Tough league to crack into in the first place, made even harder when you don't get a chance to get on the court to show your skills. Hopefully, a number of these young players can get signed to international contracts and work on their games to come back in 2021.
They say this is the worst year to be graduating and entering the workforce - no exceptions for WNBA players, it seems!

and we don't even have the safety net of entering graduate school (kids may not want to spend full tuition on classes conducted like youtube videos). :(

Now they just need to start playing. Prime time daily 3 games a day. 6 pm eastern, 8 pm eastern ,10 pm eastern. 6 teams play, 6 get a day off. 3 games a week, one 2 day break. Switch teams around. They would rake the TV money in. Now pick a location and roll.

Pretty good plan.

I guess venue should be picked by looking for urban centers with minimal Covid19 infection rates.

This article has the data . San Antonio or Portland sounds optimal

The teams should probably try to practice first. Zoom team meetings likely don't prepare the 12 teams for quality competitive play.

I agree that us fans want fresh content to watch as soon as possible, but the WNBA has lots to get worked out re: protocols for testing and removing a player(s) from competition once an active infection is identified. And that inevitably will happen.

Perhaps players (the total was 18 the last time I saw the growing list) who have been suspended by their respective teams may actually get a shot to play in 2020 if the rosters take a hit due to more positive tests. Current rules call for the suspended players to sit out the entire season. Or, waived players may get their shots sooner rather than later if depleted rosters need some help.

The WNBA won't know until it tries to open. Should the NBA start up again as anticipated in July, the WNBA will follow.

Tampa, that way the players can get a decent night's sleep even with a late game.

Once again. The W needs to stop taking a backseat to everyone else. If I was a player or coach, I would care less what the NBA does. The W needs TV and less competition for viewers.

I think the NBA and WNBA will be active in the same time window July-Sept as they try to squeeze things in before the feared second wave. We will be small guppies in the tsunami of the NBA playoffs
