Wait a minute. There is somebody missing here. How can the leagues pre ordained MVP not be in the top 5 in any stat? It must be another Auriemma conspiracy.

She's 6th in scoring, 8th in rebounding, 6th in assists, 8th in steals and 9th and blocks. More importantly, her team is tied for first place and is undefeated. It's early in the season, but Parker and Moore are the runaway candidates for MVP early on this year.

Tina Charles is 1st in points, 1st in rebounds, 8th in assists, and 8th in steals (CP is tied for 9th now).

I wouldn't consider a player for MVP that is playing on a team with a sub .500 record and/or a team that didn't make the playoffs. That just a player that's racking up stats on a losing team and they are losing games with that player putting up numbers and losing games without that player putting up those numbers.

if teams continue to double Breanna then her numbers continue to be outstanding... teams playing to stop Stewie will only produce lots good shots for Jewell...Stewie continues to prove that she is among the elite players in the game...and a deserving olympian...think the Stewie and Loyd are a great start to a strong future for the Storm...wonder after 6-7 games, if Loyd has thought she would have at least 3 national championships if she had signed a different letter of intent...just curious

Tina is the top candidate for MVP at this time, with Maya a close second. Parker is great, but not playing as well as them right now.

I also find it humorous (ha, ha!) that UConn prides itself on free throw percentage and yet no alum shows up here.

No UConn tie, but I gotta give Chicago's Jamierra Faulkner a shout out, leading the league early with 6.6 apg. She was the 34th pick in the WNBA draft by the Sky in 2014, made an impact right away, and with Vandersloot missing a couple games (injury?) this season, there has been no drop off with at PG with Faulkner filling the void, perhaps even improvement as she has been a slightly better scorer than Sloot thus far.

Stewart's rebounding (which just jumped from 8.9 to 9.9 rpg after 17 in her last game) has impressed me the most. Starting alongside forward Alysha Clark who stands at 5'11" and center Crystal Langhorne 6'2", she definitely has risen to the challenge on the glass for Seattle, which surprised me b/c her rebounding at UConn was merely excellent, versus her phenomenal scoring/shooting and shot blocking (although, Kiah Stokes certainly made a statement with a nasty block against Stewart in their meeting yesterday: Kiah Stokes With A Massive Block Against Her Former College Teammate - WNBA.com - Official Site of the WNBA)

Yeah, Vandersloot had an ankle injury. The Sky struggled while she was out despite Faulkner's good play, mainly because they had no one to spell Faulkner. Chicago has won 3 straight since Sloot's return (vs. Dallas and vs. Washington x2). For now, Faulkner has retained the starting spot. It's pretty awesome to be able to bring Sloot off the bench to captain the second unit.

Faulkner has been a favorite of mine for her entire career. She's so much fun to watch with her speed and now her passing and shooting have both improved. If she could cut the turnovers, she'd be as good as anyone in the league.

Eric, how would you handicap it? I think right now Moore would be #1, but Parker is certainly a contender.

Food for thought:

Per 36 minutes:
Parker - 22.1 pts, 8.6 reb, 5.0 ast, 2.1 stl, 1.5 block
Charles - 21.6 pts, 11.7 reb, 3.7 ast, 1.6 stl, 0.7 block
Moore - 24.5 pts, 5.0 reb, 6.3 ast, 1.2 stl, 1.2 block

Charles is shooting a better FG%, but when you factor in Parker's 3s, she has a better eFG% and true shooting %.

PER:
Parker - 26.4
Charles - 24.0
Moore - 27.7

Charles is playing 35.7 mpg compared to 30.0 for Parker. Once you adjust for that, the stat lines are pretty comparable.

Of course she's a contender. I was disagreeing with the idea that she and Moore are the "runaway candidates thus far".

Gotcha, they are my top two at this point but not a "runaway". Not like, for example, EDD was at this point last year.

My money is on Tina Charles. She is scoring and grabbing almost 12 rebounds a game.

Looks like UConn is bad for woman's professional basketball as well as college basketball
