The Fever had to do it to fill out their roster. I think Katie Lou would have wanted to stay. But they probably told her she wasn’t part of their plans and that led to this compromise. I am curious to know more about this though.

guessing the buyout terms + KLS already having a preferred landing spot is enough to compel her to agree to part ways. $180k contract for her production is alot to give up on her end.

Not shocked. She would be the 4th best SF on the roster. Her contact was one of the worst in the league. Wish her well. The Valkyrie should be able to pay her

Along those lines, maybe they want to fill out the roster and needed to find the room to get the necessary cap space.
Cutting a deal with KLS allows them to do so...

Why? Perhaps there's another trade coming up that sends out yet another Fever small forward (among Cunningham, Hull, Wallace) or draft choice. A trade that specifically brings in Marina Mabrey.

Mabrey collects more than $200,000 and Indiana is finding the (financial) space. KLS makes $180K. While Mabrey played just the end part and playoffs for her, Stephanie White liked what Mabrey brought to the court with her shooting, flexibility of positions and moxie. Indy could send a small forward and/or draft choice to Connecticut, while the Fever get a wing who can shift over to off guard when Indy wants to go big.

The timing on KLS got me thinking on this....

Stay tuned.

Phee and KLS reunion??

If Annie Costabile of the Sun Times reports it, I'm sure Minnesota is one of the four teams interested.
And, yes, I'm sure 'Phee would have been consulted/asked about this....

It was a contract divorce so the Fever still have to take a loss. It's been reported they agreed to 106k. So at best they have enough for 1 vet and a mid-season cheap 12 player. Or they can go after in on the 11th player for around 115k.

I would not be shocked if the Aces showed an interest, now that her overvalued salary is not an issue.

Or trade someone?

From the WNBA Transaction Page of Feb. 10th, here's one that caught my attention:

- Kathryn Westbeld signed a Training Camp Contract with the Phoenix Mercury.

For those of you who might recall, Kat Westbeld was the captain and fifth starter on Notre Dame's national championship team of 2018, along with Arike Ogunbowale, Jackie Young, Marina Mabrey and Jess Shepard. She's the only one who has not played in the WNBA, although she is playing professionally in leagues from Puerto Rico and Spain to Australia and Spain.

Who knows if she has a chance to make the league this year or next (with two more new teams coming in)? But it's good to see her get a chance, particularly since her younger sister, Maddy, will probably be trying out for a team after the draft in a few months.

Coach Niele Ivey refers to Sonia Citron as the glue of this current ND team. Kat Westbeld was not only the glue of that NC team, but the silent, calming leader teams are lucky to have. Go Kat!

Interesting as Meesseman just posted this and I was going to tease @Dillon77 that their posts about her got on her radar. ;):D

C'mon Emma....Annie and I think you sign the deal!! :)
And then Mabrey may take back her "trade me" demand....
Things get interestinglyer and interestinglyer.

I mean, there's only one premiere landing pad for Euros in the W, and it's obviously the Valkyries! Not sure what we're going to do during Eurobasket, but I guess we can always load up on 7 day player contracts... :p

WNBA Transaction of the Day:

Taylor Soule signed a Training Camp Contract with the Washington Mystics.

Soule was with the Lynx last year, right? If she hung with Coach Reeve, that's a good sign. And the Mystics have a bunch of knock-me-down and I-come-backers. Good luck, Taylor

They need the depth with Horston out for the season.
Nika Muhl is probably out for the season, as well, given her injury in the early part of the Euro season.

At first, I was wondering why a point guard, with Skylar Diggins-Smith and Muhl, then I remembered Muhl's injury and the fact the Sami Whitcomb has moved on to Phoenix. Guess there would be room if Seattle takes a lead or combo guard at #2.

Didn't realize Muhl will be out with injury. If she was healthy, do you think Seattle has enough faith in her to be their backup PG? She barely played at all as a rookie.

Conjecture at this poin. However, I think we'll possibly know the answer to that question when Seattle makes it' draft choice in April, particularly if Ms. Bueckers or Ms. Miles are available.

Where is my brain at today? If they do select either of those two, could make Wheeler's role with the team in doubt. Maybe just an insurance policy. Or maybe they see her playing at the 2 some.

Muhl is in WNBA purgatory. The league requires a team to carry 11 players, even if coach does not plan to use them.

The 11th player is often an inexpensive 1st yr draft pick.

On a well managed team, that 11th player is nurtured in hope they can become a future contributor.

On a poorly run team that 11th spot just rots like dead wood.

Nika like Lou Lopez-Senechal further complicates things by being injured.

Only time will tell for both, if there is a happy end. I'm pulling for both, two of my favs.

I just went back to the WNBA transaction site and saw the deal is a "training camp contract," so this could very much be a "let's see what happens" deal...
