When the Miracle left Orlando, Hartford wanted them to play there. Even though our capital city is not New York or Los Angeles it is a way better place than Uncasville or Montville if you want to do something on off nights. Plus the airport is closer. With what seems that every major city wanting a franchise now where does this leave the Sun. The current teams are updating their facilities. Will the Mohegan tribe do the same? I doubt it. Team average attendance is annually in the lower quarter. With the WNBA giving the Liberty the championship last season the Connecticut Sun becomes the longest league team without a championship. Even though they have come close. We all know that players don’t want to come to Connecticut to play. There isn’t anything here. The can’t even spend time playing in the casino because they are employees. The New London Day wrote an article about this a while back. Will the league force the team to sell or relocate at some point? Is that possible? I really don’t have that answer. However, can the NBA offer the tribe a G-League team for the tribe to move the Sun?

Thank you for your post. I had no idea about the history of this franchise or the ownership which is reminiscent of a community that owns an NFL franchise in Green Bay.

In fact, the tribal owners created history in the WNBA by making the Connecticut Sun the first-ever profitable team in the league’s history in 2007

So this dilemma is an intriguing one. From one perspective you have a unique ownership group that really reflects the WNBA drive for diversity and inclusivity. The article above implies that the tribe has been relatively successful in managing their assets and is fiscally sound.

That being the case your critique of recent times reflects the long drought suffered by Green Bay after the Lombardi/Star years. That franchise struggled with organizational difficulties before they were able to put in place a Management group that understood the ownership structure, the challenges imposed by that structure and how to accommodate those challenges in order to be successful.

I see no reason why this couldn't be duplicated with the current Connecticut Sun ownership.

My advice would be to look to the Phoenix Mercury and do the exact opposite.

If DT doesn't retire...could be interesting to see who asserts themself as THE alpha in Phoenix. AT has certainly been that in Connecticut for the majority of her career.

A team can only core one player at a time. Does anyone know if a team can trade for a 'cored' player, if they already 'cored' their own player?
Edit: Found answer: See article

"It's not a tag that just sticks to the player, preventing a team from having more than one cored player on their roster. Like Griner, Skylar Diggins-Smith was also cored in 2020, in her case by the Dallas Wings. She was then signed-and-traded to Phoenix, which is perfectly legal because she wasn't the Mercury's cored player."

Other Cored Players: Fever - Mitchell, Seattle - Williams, Liberty - Stewart, Wings - Sabally.

Tiffany was a key addition for the Aces last year, and I expect both the team and the player would like to do it again, but the cap may get in the way. The Aces will probably be looking at 11 players not 12, and quite a few that are at or near the minimum. To the extent they do spend more than that on a key rotation player, the money might be better spent on a big.

One advantage true contenders have, however, is that they can sometimes get a player for less than they could get elsewhere because the player is chasing a ring. It happens in reverse as well, where weak teams in unattractive cities, or with poor facilities, that have lots of cap space frequently have to pay more than market value to get a player to go there.

With BG going to the Dream, my gut is telling me DT won't be back. But who knows with her?

I think it all depends on who else they can get in free agency. Adding AT is a start

What could have taken place if Tiffany Hayes had returned to the Sun instead of jumping ship then signing with the Aces?

I don't think Tiffany Hayes staying in Connecticut would have made much of a difference. The Sun's biggest issue was their post play. Bri and AT are both undersized, they handle it well for the most games but in other games they got overpowered and out rebounded by the bigs who dominate the league. Another productive big could have helped them tremendously.

Free agency this year has seen a lot of big names move around. As of yet, I haven’t seen any move that makes me think a new contender to the Liberty/Lynx has emerged.

If they can get Bonner and/or Satou, it might be too attractive to pass up for Diana. That would be a title contender for sure.

I mean Vegas is one for sure Jewell and talks of a productive big coming as well. Atlanta has potential with a legit big for once and a depth piece in Shatori. Seattle, Indiana and Phoenix have potential based on who else they get.

Kelsey Mitchell resigned a 1 year contract with Indiana
Right move for both parties.
I could see Fever standing pat now -- seeing if White can coax Smith to play some defense -- and getting a solid contributor in the draft (Citron? Morrow?).

On the other hand, maybe a trade? Stay tuned.

I am keeping my eye on Dallas. I am ready to pounce on twitter if they give away Satou for a cheap price.

Monica Wright Rogers Will be GM of the Toronto Tempo

Has put in time in a lot of capacities, as a player, assistant coach, administrator, etc. (Solid player in college and for the Lynx.) She'd been with the Phoenix Mercury for two years, but this still struck me as a bit of a leap to be the first-ever general manager of a franchise. Is she a rising star or is there that small a hiring pool in these positions? Plus, the Mercury haven't exactly been lighting it up the last few years.

@azfan -- Given your knowledge, is there anything you can impart?
