WNBA Draft

I do not blame the Sun for taking Kelly because I do think she will be a great WNBA player, but I do think the team is a mess this year with the injuries. And definitely Kalana, Hightower and Kelly have similar qualities and not all three will remain. I thought there were a few teams that would have been better for her at least this next year.

I know this is typically a Uconn board...but is anyone else surprised by Markel Walker not being picked...I felt she was so multi-talented...Like I think Whitney Hand was phenomenal when she was healthy...but really?! Kamiko Williams was kind of a shock for me as well. Being so high that is.

I'm surprised that D. Williams, and T. Spani were not drafted.
Some other thoughts: Diggins will make Tulsa interesting (she looked real fine and she can sure talk = she'll be the face of the team for years to come).
I think that IN and LA will be really sorry they didn't pick Kelly.
Lobo sounds so much better when she does not scream. She is articulate, smart knowledgeable and a pleasure to listen to her analysis.

Spani played most of the last season with back pain. She really needs some time to rest. I'm sure the GMs were aware of her medical issues. Hopefully after some rest she will be able to play overseas.

With Faris, you know what is are getting...hard-working, versatile player, who maximizes her skillset, allows other players to be stars, and is the consummate glue player - the catalyst to help the team win.

With other players, their ceilings are higher. But will they reach those ceilings? There is so much more by way of player-coach relationships, motivating factors, etc., to factor into the analysis. With Faris, you know what you will get, and you will get the same things no matter who is coaching and no matter what team she is on. For a good team, like CT is, that is a good fit. You don't need a cornerstone of a franchise; you need a player who will help the team win and get he Sun "over the hump."

What C Crazy just said. And I would almost like to take that thought and apply it to some college teams. The high potential players vs. the solid known commodity.

Thanks for the insight, Cam.

nice lovely person the sun are getting. + she will set tix at the mohegan sun where they play.

Lobo was really great last night, she was the best thing on the telecast. Agree she is so much better without the screaming and she really knows her WBB!

I think Bone will be a washout.
She has the physical gifts to be very good, but I don't get the sense she has developed them in college the way she could have. I think of the transformation Tina accomplished in four years and she was maybe a less highly regarded in HS? I would compare Bone to Kia Vaughn in terms of development. So yes, I wonder if she will blossom as a pro or end up falling by the wayside. And with that question, not sure you can use such a high pick. Similar to their pick last year.

Williams has a shot as a free agent, as an undersized post player for bench depth. A team like Seattle could use her.

As for Spani, I am not surprised. What WNBA-level skill does she have? She is a hard worker, and she hustles. She had a good shooting year and has good size, but she cannot create off the dribble and is not known for court vision or as a passer. She is not a lockdown defender. Spani was a good college player who had a nice career. Just because she graduated from Tennessee does not make her a WNBA player, just as graduating from UConn did not make Maria Conlon a WNBA player.

As for Indiana not taking Kelly, I do not think the franchise will be sorry. Among its guards, Indiana is pretty set with January and Douglas as starters and players like Zellous and Erin Phillips as backups. Sure, you may see Douglas at the three, when Catchings move to the four. But Indiana already has a Faris-type player in Jeannette Pohlen (a player known as a glue player who broke out her senior year to become the PAC 12 Player over the Year over Nneka Ogwumike).

As for Los Angeles, that is a pretty good question. There is concern that Beard's injuries overseas may limit her ability to play many minutes, if at all in the WNBA this year. Harding and Toliver are the likely starters, with Beard at the three, but without Beard, there is a glaring hole, to say nothing of the fact the roster is severely lacking in bench depth at the perimeter positions. There is definitely a positional need. For LA, the question is whether the franchise thought Mathies was the better player (or could be the better) or the better fit with the roster. Only Penny Toler can answer those questions (as an aside, I do not think much of her GM abilities).

Tina Charles was National HS Player of the Year.
Whoops! But as I remember it Bone and Griner were trading turns being the top ranked player in their class, too.

Good analysis - And I sort of see Mathies in the mold of Toliver and Harding - volume shooters - which makes me wonder with Parker being their prize player. I would think a Kelis Fisher type player would have been a pretty perfect fit - someone who doesn't need to shoot much but will work to get everyone else their shots.
