WNBA Draft invitees - Azzi (merged)

I posted on one of the draft threads that I didn't think that Dallas would draft Azzi because Arike had re-signed with them. I'm glad that I have no idea how the W works and that Paige and Azzi are together again.

This was potentially a chance to lock up the equivalent of Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi for 5 years.

They can now start Paige, Azzi and Arike with their two new $1 million post players. Plus they have some depth behind that.

Now they just have to stay healthy, and we will see how the ball sharing goes. 😁

Congrats to Azzi!

Holly’s French is horrible, literally incomprehensible. If her goal had been to communicate, it would have been much better for her to speak slightly slower, simpler English. 😬

Based on your handle, I’m wondering if you’re from Maine, and if so, from up in the County (I lived there for several years) or down by Bidderford and if you’re fluent in Québécois French.

I appreciated Holly’s respect for the French player by addressing her in her native language. Perhaps you found it terrible but the player clearly seemed to understand what Holly was saying and IMO, that’s what matters most.

It would have been respectful to exchange basic pleasantries in French, but to not conjugate verbs, not use object pronouns, throw random English words in the middle of questions, no. To me that showed that it was more about Holly than about making questions comprehensible for the draftee.
And, no, I am from nowhere near the County. My French was primarily learned in college and in Nice, France.

I was wondering though, why Holly was using the more familiar tu versus vous? Don’t the French think it is disrespectful to use the informal when you don’t know someone? The exception being for small children? I agree w OP that her French wasn’t good and the interaction was awkward with the player speaking English and Holly trying to speak in French. It was distracting.

No. We needed Awa, Cotie or Betts. SMH! We did not need another guard.

The Wings have been loading up on bigs in free agency. With Yu also coming back, they appear to be set at the center position. The question now is whether Arike can mesh her game with Paige and Azzi's.

very interesting draft. i wonder what the experts think about "winners" and "losers", and i wonder who will make rosters. Glad Williams was drafted, she went to portland? better shot at making that roster than the sun.

In case people are interested, here is what Dallas Wings coach Jose Fernandez and GM Curt Miller had to say about picking Azzi Fudd No. 1

Gotta hand it to Paige. She didn't dress too fancy, and tried to stay away from the TV cameras. She wasn't at Azzi's table, even though Azzi was at her's last year. Why? I think she didn't want to create any distraction from Azzi -- it was her night. If she was more involved, she knew it would be a distraction.

I'm really, really happy that all of Azzi's teammates were there to support her and then they got to support Serah. I don't know if it was a surprise or if Serah was notified pre-draft that she was on some team's clock. Either way, she was dressed for the occasion. Also, I enjoyed her post trade media availability.

I'm thrilled for my local girl, Azzi. She and Paige have wanted to play together for 6 or 7 years. Last year, we got a sense of what they could do together. Adding Arike to the mix makes Dallas a very explosive team.

Though there was some talk about Dallas needing bigs, I think that was addressed via free agency. A year ago, Paige talked about making the Wings a franchise that other players would want to go to. I think she was very successful in that regard. The front court now adds Awak Kuier, Alanna Smith, Jessica Shepard, and Zee Spearman. The Wings will be very fun to watch.
