Yeah, I'm not going to another bowl game in Detroit. Literally witnessed a hand to hand transaction walking to the sports bar last time we were there. No thanks.

Stop being a pu**y.

If witnessing "hand to hand" transactions was that big of a deal I'd never be able to look my dogs in the eye again.

Gotta do better than the empty grassy lot where a building used to stand as a herd of people walks by if you're being "discreet". Seriously, If I was offered an all expenses paid trip to watch UConn in a bowl game in Detroit I think I would seriously consider passing.

Been going to Detroit for work for years. It’s not Miami, LA, New Orleans, etc., but, it is not horrendous and downtown is fine. I really like Comerica Park; but have never been inside Ford Field. Plus, for entertainment, one can always go across the river to Windsor. Of course, as a 30+ year old married guy, there is nothing I would find interesting there

The only thing worse than a bowl in Detroit is playing in the second tier bowl in Detroit. With the B1G now having their own bowl there, any other bowl in the city will probably draw less attention than a regional high school cheerleading competition.

Detroit has interesting old buildings. I actually have an interest in architecture (and history). Detroit will always be a historic city. Michigan is still in the B1G, right?

Unfortunately, I've come to the concluion that my stock in UConn and it's athletics programs are trading at a 10-year low. I'm hoping there are enough UConn fans who have the means and ability not to sell their UConn stock right now so that we can weather this storm together.

At this point it seems we need to concentrate on getting bowl eligible and absolutely dominating ANY bowl we're lucky enough to get invited to.

The rest is in the hands of both JC's.

I agree.

As an architect, you'd be the first person to recognize how important the city of Michigan is to the future of the state of Detroit.

If hand to hand transactions are an issue you better cross Rentschler off your list. And XL. And every other city in America

To be fair, it really is horrendous. I travel at least twice a month for work and have been to almost every metro area in the country and Detroit is the worst by such an incredibly large margin that its almost impossible to put in to words. Comerica and Ford Field are amazing and Chelis, Hockeytown, Greek town and the Motor City casino are ok but I'd rather pull my finger nails out with pliers then spend another weekend there. That being said, I love Uconn enough to do it.

There really is no reason to spend a night in Detroit with Windsor right there.

I wonder how many of us were in the same bar.

Unless Detroit bans single malt scotch I'm there.

(And even if they do I will just bring my own)

I really can't think of a reason not to go to a bowl game.

Can we please consider cities that aren't in the top ten crime in the us. Some of us value our lives

I stayed in the Westin outside the city and drove in for the game. Hardly dangerous. We did drive down 8 mile road though. Strange. Was all strip clubs and churches.

Trust me guys, I've worked with criminals for almost 15 years. There is little that shocks me when it comes to crime, but when I'm spending a good chunk of change to go on a mini vacation, I don't want to almost bump into two dudes during a drug transaction. Add on top of it that it was cold, and dingy, and yeah I'll definitely pass. Much props to those who will make that trip a second time.

Well flint and Detroit are 1 and 2 on the violent crime list and Memphis is number 5. Strip clubs and church's don't interest me either.

If that is the case, you would have to rule out the Sugar Bowl or any other bowl in New Orleans. Meadowlands could be out to if one includes that as part of the ‘Newark’ DMA.

Detroit in many ways screwed itself. First, it put too many eggs in one basket – the auto industry. Second, it never invested in public transit infrastructure due in part due to pressure from the auto industry. Thus, when the manufacturing jobs evaporated, service companies found it hard to set-up shop in downtown Detroit due to lack of transit options into the city core. Chicago, which is also a major manufacturing city, diversified its economy and invested in public transit. Its population between 2000 and 2010 dropped 7% while during the same time period, Detroit’s dropped 25%.
The auto industry in the US was its own worst enemy, too, in the early 2000’s. The Big 3 refused to see that consumer taste was changing, i.e. let’s sell hemi engines in everything when gas post-Katrina was over $4 a gallon. The auto unions also contributed as their greed blinded them to the fact that the industry cannot afford workers with a high school education (good people, just not the skill set needed in today’s economy) making $40/hour on the factory floor while folks doing the same job in Tennessee and abroad are making $20/hour or less. Plus, for every job lost at one of the Big 3, something like 5 jobs are lost at the Tier I and II suppliers that are all over the place in metro Detroit.

In Detroit, you can avoid the crime. Memphis is a little rougher, as most of the action is downtown. I got chased down the street by a bum back in the 90s when I was there for work because I wouldn't give him money. But Memphis is a lot more fun. Great food and jazz.

(I'm not suggesting I love Detroit - but it won't deter me from attending a bowl game)

The outer parts of Detroit's not great / just flat out horrible & dangerous - but the downtown + midtown's areas are pretty solid.

There's been a real push to redo Detroit's entire downtown area through private funds the past few years pushed by Dan Gilbert (the guy who owns Quicken Loans) and that's led to that area getting built up again and businesses moving in. It's too early to call it a success but the early results look quite promising.

Memphis cleaned up quite a bit, but people in the burbs have iron barred doors and lower windows -- lock down.

I've been chased in NYC before. One night at UConn circa February 97, 5 friends and I decided on taking a road trip to NYC and we jam packed in my little VW jetta. We were in the Village and this dude just started shouting at us that we were on his territory and that he was going to bust a cap in our . We ran and he followed us into this tiny restaurant and continued shouting at us and the he was going to kill us. The whole restaurant screeched to halt. And thankfully, this one big guy with a big booming voice, was like "hey man, you have to get out of here, I'm trying to have dinner with my lady and you are disrespecting me and my lady here. you need to leave now." The crazy dude was like, "ok, i'm sorry, i'm out."

As an 18 year-old freshman, i was scared less. For that guy to chase us into a restaurant, I did not think it would end well. I remember when we busted in there the hostess told us, "you need to leave now". I was like, "we'll take a table, we'll stay for dinner." She was like, "all the tables are full." Kind of of like the Power 5 conferences are telling us, we just need one strong guy with a booming voice to come to our rescue.

I've been working in NYC since 1995 and have never even remotely felt unsafe. Strange how that works.
