Trust me when i say that committing resources to w. volleyball and hockey is NOT going to stop you from having enough for w.basketball.

This isnt a mid-major this is (supposedly) a B10 team in the B10 conference.
 

"One non-portal tidbit this morning is that former Missouri HC Robin Pingeton’s name has risen to the top of the Wisconsin coaching search, per source. I’ll continue to monitor from a distance as Wisconsin continues on with one of the strangest P4 coaching searches in recent memory."

I can definitely confirm this!

This is why it's called a coaching carousel. Fail at your job and get another plum job. it's like the NFL.

I absolutely believe coaches can drop down a level or two and be successful again. But Harper, and now probably Pingeton, aren't dropping down -- they're remaining at P4 level with the expectation that they wont fail this time. I'm skeptical.

I'm trying not to laugh but I legitimately feel bad for Wisconsin fans. I can confirm that at least 4 top coaches (3 mid-majors) turned them down.

I'm thinking of some of the reactions brought up over the Yemen group chat including a reporter: you're joking, right?

Is the situation that bad in Madison regarding women's hoops that mid-majors consider it a "wrong turn" to go there? That's not a good sign. Nor is hiring a coach who clearly was on a slide going downhill. Wow. Just wow.

Per your point, Jonathan Tsipis -- who had success at George Washington before also not being able to crack Wisconsin -- helped out Megan Duffy at Marquette (returning the favor he did when hiring her at GW as an assistant) before taking over a 6-24 team at Western Carolina. He led them to a 13-17 record this year, which is a solid first step forward. In the case of Missouri, a coach has a payout and doe some TV work before landing the next gig, while the coach she replaces pulls a horizontal move.

Now, of course, we'll see if there are resources in place for the coaches to succeed and/or i the coaches have the ability to overcome it.

Kellie Harper absolutely is dropping down. Missouri and Tennessee share a conference, but they don’t share resources or expectations. No school that employs Robin Pingeton for 15 years can claim to be anywhere close to the same level as Tennessee.

Again I had a better impression of her TN time than most , but also Res Ipsa Loquitor?
Two p4 jobs totaling 9 years.

I still can’t believe she’s getting a 3rd try so soon

Harper was decent but not great, two 2nd round appearances and 2 Sweet 16s at Tennessee. I don't think she's a great hire for Missouri but not a terrible one either. At best she'll make them a tournament team but I don't see them elevating to a top 10-15 program, which is likely acceptable for the program considering they don't place huge value on women's basketball.

The amount of money they're paying though is surprising. 900k per year is a lot IMO. If they are willing to shell out that much, I would've thought they'd land a better coach but good for Harper. If she leads Mizzou to the NCAA tournament it'll be her 5th program she's taken to the NCAAs which I'd assume has to be a record.

Every school must allocate time, money and limited resources to sports to achieve the best results possible. To me, spending the rather absurd money on a HC, 4 assistants, numerous paid support personnel like Basketball operations, academic advisers and then money for student managers can be better spent on other sports which do not have the same amount of overhead costs to get them to elite status.

Swimming for example has not only cut the number of Men's programs but also merged all the coaching staffs so one head coach, one assistant coach and one diving coach is responsible for 36-40 swimmers both male and female. That's a ratio of 3 to 40+ whereas WCBB has 5 full time coaches for 12-14 players (plus all the other support personnel I listed above).

I am perfectly fine with Wisconsin not prioritizing WCBB when they do already prioritize VB and Hockey. Heck, UConn prioritizes Field Hockey and that is a niche sport.

Trust you? Are you an AD at a major university? I am not sure if you have ever been engaged in any University AD budget discussions but there is always a hierarchy and pecking order that each school assesses on what is important. Most times it is competing against their conference foes in sports but sometimes geography drives the bus like with Wisconsin or Vermont. Vermont has a phenomenal ski team due to their location, so they do spend resource money on this sport that many of their conference piers do not. Wisconsin is elite in Volleyball whereas Maryland is not. The NCAA does not differentiate sport titles so winning a title in Volleyball counts just as much as Basketball.

I'm not sure if you even know what you just typed. Like what does any of this have to do with what i said about rev. sharing among wbb and wvb/w.hockey.

Heck, what does Maryland have to do with this? Is it because of the Kevin Willard to Villanova rumors, lol?

Looking at nearby Big Ten programs you have:
Minnesota: $4.66 million

Michigan State: $4.85 million

I get that Wisconsin spends more on women's hockey and more on volleyball but the fact that they're basically throwing in the towel for women's basketball and spending far less than all other neighboring B1G programs is stunning. Especially considering the recent explosion of interest in women's basketball and the fact that fans will show up for women's sports if they start winning (volleyball sells out every match and women's basketball was top 5 in attendance in the late 90s/early 00s when they had NCAA tournament teams.)

If they could pull a decent coach and become a borderline top 25 program, they'll start drawing 8-10k fans per game and will generate a lot more revenue and buzz. Wisconsin should be one of the easiest schools to recruit to too--it's a great college town, has strong academics and is within a few hours of Chicago/Minnesota/Milwaukee. They've had a lot of in-state talent over the past decade too that's left the area (Arike Ogunbowale, KK Arnold, Megan Gustafson, McKenna Warnock, Lexi Donarski, and Allie Ziebell to name a few). Hiring Pingeton and not allocating any money for NIL just shows they don't care about the success of the program and it's a real shame.

Just one comment about that attendance back "in the day" - folks that wanted hockey / men's basketball season seats licensed the seats for all 3 sports - hockey / mbb / wbb and essentially had season tix for all. This was back in the day when the Kohl Center was fairly new. We went up to see Rutgers play there and we got the whole story from a bus driver (it was pouring rain and the campus transport driver picked us up and gave us a mini-tour on the way to the game) and also from the person sitting next to us at the game who had season tix with a primary hockey interest.

Maryland spends lots of money on WCBB but does not spend money on Volleyball. In fact Maryland has one of the smallest sports team offerings in all D1 so they spend their money on WCBB. Willard has nothing to do with it.

My blunt point to you is Wisconsin has 23 sports, Maryland has 20. Maryland chooses to give lots of money to Brenda and some to Lacrosse and Golf and very little to other sports as they are not competitive in Soccer, Tennis, Indoor track, Cross Country.

Wisconsin gives money to Hockey (national champs), soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball, cross country and golf.

So this board is solely focused on WCBB which Wisconsin only mildly participates in but they fund so many other sports better than Maryland or CT does and that's ok. Just because we view WCBB is growing doesn't mean Wisconsin has to fund it.

You can't give money to everyone-that's my point.

The player allegations likely took a toll.

Even if they're false, and I hope they are, it's not fun to have those accusations thrown at you, especially when you're already fighting an uphill battle.
