I went to college in upper New York State only 20 miles from Canada and watched a lot of Canadian tv. Curling is a big thing up there so I developed a liking for it. It’s great the U.S. is doing so well in this cool sport

These sports seem goofy, but while in college I was never good enough to make the USA cycling team, so I figured my ticket to the Olympics was luge, or skeleton, or curling. I ended up liking these more than the bigger name brand sports.

So does this mean the Olympics have started even though they haven't started?

(Reminiscent of ony of my favorite lines from Firesign, "Benjamin Franklin, the only President of the United States who was never President of the United States.)

Actually started events yesterday.

Michael Scott of The Office said that Franklin was one of our great presidents.

Opening Ceremonies are tomorrow evening starting at 8:00 ET. However, because some of the sports take longer to play out they start one or two days beforehand.

A good explanation for hocky, but not for curling, which has to be the least impactful sport in the Olympics. FYI, I've done curling and I have friends who are really into it. It is a little harder than it looks.

All the curling events are held at the Cortina stadium. Even with four sheets in the facility, three rounds of matches are the most they can fit in one day. Grooming the ice is a really big job and important in keeping playing conditions consistent and fair. With three events (men, women, mixed), extra days are needed to get all those matches in.

It's just the number of matches in Curling. There's 3 groups, Mixed, Men, Women. Each "tournament" has a round robin stage of 9 matches for each team, then playoffs. And I think most of the "mixed" players are part of the men or womens teams. So they complete the Mixed before they start the Men and Womens. So like 280+ matches?

Is that a reference to Firesign Theatre? Porgy tire biter...?
Nope. Sorry, never heard of them. Just the events started the day before the question.

🫨 Quite a statement considering that it looks pretty close to impossible.

Just walking on the ice or sliding on one knee on the ice is pretty much impossible for me. Let alone the actual skill part to direct the stone down the ice and have it go where I want.

Having tried it once - the sliding part is the most challenging. Never had to worry about where the stone ended up - was just happy if I didn't fall.

You can try your hand at curling clubs in Petersham,Ma and Norfolk, CT.
I have been to the Petersham place twice for birthday parties. It was a lot of fun but a drive too far to make more regular visits.

Curling is incredibly intense and nuanced. So fun to watch. One can really understand the dedication to the sport.

There’s no way I could get out of that crouch position. I enjoy watching the sport.

Bocce on ice. The ice is pebbly and 1 shoe grips and the other shoe slides, so it's not too difficult to walk on. However, getting down and getting back up again is a challenge even in my living room 😊

What did everyone think of opening ceremonies? I thought that they were okay. Showing athletes from four different locations had to be a chore for NBC. I don’t think every country was shown.

I asked my cousins how are things in Milan. She said that the city is in chaos. No place to park. Roads are blocked. When I was there last year I didn’t go near stadium. I stayed around the main station area.

Nice to watch Men’s downhill thus morning with option to rewind.

There is young man from Fairfield competing in freestyle.

Peacock is worth it for me in February.

Highlight of the opening ceremonies for me was Andrea Bocelli performing the Nessun Dorma aria form Puccini's Turandot.
It gave me chills.
