OT: Winter Olympics Watch

I went to college in upper New York State only 20 miles from Canada and watched a lot of Canadian tv. Curling is a big thing up there so I developed a liking for it. It’s great the U.S. is doing so well in this cool sport

These sports seem goofy, but while in college I was never good enough to make the USA cycling team, so I figured my ticket to the Olympics was luge, or skeleton, or curling. I ended up liking these more than the bigger name brand sports.

A good explanation for hocky, but not for curling, which has to be the least impactful sport in the Olympics. FYI, I've done curling and I have friends who are really into it. It is a little harder than it looks.

All the curling events are held at the Cortina stadium. Even with four sheets in the facility, three rounds of matches are the most they can fit in one day. Grooming the ice is a really big job and important in keeping playing conditions consistent and fair. With three events (men, women, mixed), extra days are needed to get all those matches in.

It's just the number of matches in Curling. There's 3 groups, Mixed, Men, Women. Each "tournament" has a round robin stage of 9 matches for each team, then playoffs. And I think most of the "mixed" players are part of the men or womens teams. So they complete the Mixed before they start the Men and Womens. So like 280+ matches?

Nope. Sorry, never heard of them. Just the events started the day before the question.

Just walking on the ice or sliding on one knee on the ice is pretty much impossible for me. Let alone the actual skill part to direct the stone down the ice and have it go where I want.

Having tried it once - the sliding part is the most challenging. Never had to worry about where the stone ended up - was just happy if I didn't fall.

I have been to the Petersham place twice for birthday parties. It was a lot of fun but a drive too far to make more regular visits.

Curling is incredibly intense and nuanced. So fun to watch. One can really understand the dedication to the sport.
