OK. Here we go again. Another year of hopefully exciting UConn Baseball to be tracked by chart below.

I am more of a lurker then a poster ( except for this chart). So I want to thank all of you that keep us updated on all things UConn baseball during the off season.

Based on research of teams that made tourney over last few years, I came up with my unscientific path for the baseball team to get an at large bid. I did tweak my chart a bit. I have separated the out of conference (non New England games), into 2 categories. They are broken into teams that were top 15 RPI last year, and teams with last years RPI of over 15.

I am assuming we play 60 games prior to NCAA. I included 4 games of AAC tourney play ( this can vary). Based on 60 games I came up with the 3 criteria we need to meet (or exceed) to get a bid. Obviously this does not guarantee a bid , but from past history it would place us in great position.

I hope some of you enjoy this. It keeps me interested in season . Also thanks again to all of you that post live updates of games. With work can't always follow team on radio or gametracker. Many of you know much more about the team then I do. I enjoy your micro posts, while my posts are more of a macro view.

I love that you do this. But I'm confused.

Why? So at the risk of being wrong and an idiot, I have two less New England games than you do and two more more non-conference non-New England games than you do. Are you counting Monmouth and Stony Brook (in NJ and NY, respectively) as New England games? (And don't tell me about Aaron Burr's plot to split the United States at the Hudson which would put Stony Brook in that part of New York that would have joined New England in splitting from the rest of the country because Eastern NY is still not New England and if it was Iona would be a New England game but not Monmouth.)

LOL.

Businesslawyer I appreciate that you went over schedule in detail. Checked my analysis of the schedule again at halftime of womens game. Not only were you correct on Monmouth and Stonybrook, but I was also including 2 games vs Army in New England games. So I need to make adjustments for 4 games. Thanks for heads up. Will revise either after Womens game or tomorrow. Great observation.

After getting a heads up from Businesslawyer, I have revised my chart. Moved Monmouth, Stonybrook and 2 Army games from New England to " Over 15 RPI (Out of Conf)".

In the past I have usually have not posted after a loss. But decided needed to today. At beginning of week was hoping for a 1-2 weekend at worse, and obviously that is still possible (but not easy). Our bats were non-existent yesterday. Not an excuse, but tough for a northern team to get things going sometime.

A win over Vandy or Mich would be huge.

Jeez, outscored 11-1 already in first two, plus a lot of unearned runs. Let's see how our boys do against the other cold weather team this morning. Hopefully not an 0-3 start.

Michigan is already on fire tho'. Beat #1 Vandy Friday, #9 Arizona State and Cal Poly yesterday.

The Pats were eliminated in the WC round a season after winning the SB. It's sports. Things are not ordained. Which is why most every baseball fan has renewed hope every spring training.

And I say this as a Pirates fan. Have some optimism!

I agree optimism is a good thing and in individual games anything can and does happen. I'm just pointing out that Michigan is the real deal (and they have a key starter out till end of March).

And they have players back from the college World Series run from last season. That really counts for something.

Just got home from Men's hoop game this afternoon. Great win over Memphis, just sad about Akok injury. Did not follow closely, but was occasionally checking phone for Baseball score updates.

Huge win over Michigan. Never looking to lose 2 of 3 over a weekend. But considering it was first 3 games and the competition we faced, I consider this a success. The Michigan win will be a plus come tourney time. Even if we go 1-2 next weekend, that means we split with last years NCAA runner-ups.

That sounds familiar. Next Saturday I will be at Gampel for the women's basketball senior day game. While watching the women play, I'll have the ear buds on listening to the UConn/Michigan baseball game on the radio.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing. Never seem to get used to the traditional slow UConn baseball starts to the season, but a win over Michigan doesn't make it seem all that bad.

Always big winning a Friday night opener, but a come from behind win vs #1 ( NCAA runner-up) Michigan is HUGE. Great relief pitching, and we out hit them 12 -4. The Fedko brothers were outstanding going 6 -9.

As I said last week, never really satisfied with a 1-2 weekend, but just getting 1 this weekend is satisfactory. With that being said, lets get 1 (or dare I say) 2 more.

Already surpassed our goal of 1-4 vs Top 15 RPI (out of conf) with our second win last night. Our RPI stands at 71, but not worried about that at all ( way to early). That will shake out over time. As of now Mich RPI is 159, Vandy 151 and Hartford at #5. Obviously that is skewed by it being so early.

Great weekend for UConn sports so far. Hockey team sweeps BU, Baseball team takes 2 of 3 from #1 Michigan, Women win and Men up at half.

Incredibly happy with a 3-3 start vs competition we faced to start season. I actually would have been satisfied with 2 wins. Great relief pitching, Krauth awesome and Crawford is going to be a beast.

Lets keep momentum going into next weekend.

A little surprised the RPI is that low considering we have played Michigan 4 times, Vandy and Cal Poly.

Warren Nolan has us at 38, but Merrimack is 3 and UHa 23. Army at 1-5 is 30. It's just too early to correlate anything.

It’s too early in the season for RPI — or any computer rankings — to be meaningful

Well, look at the current RPI listed for Michigan (171), Vandy (189), and Cal Poly (133) on the Warren Nolan website. It is just too early for the RPI to have any sort of real meaning. A few years ago, I figured mid to late March was a good guide. I found this notion of mine to be confirmed by the D1baseball.com website, where there is a statement that they don't begin to list RPI for teams on their website until March 18. By that time five weekends of play will have been completed, and we will have a better idea of how Michigan, Vandy, and Cal Poly will be shaking out for the season. At any rate, I figure D1baseball knows what it is doing, so the mid March date is a good guide for beginning to give RPI rankings any creedence.

By the way, Michigan plays at Cal Poly next weekend.

ROUNDUP Aaron Fitt - February 24, 2020

>>Here’s a quick and dirty look at the teams that impressed us most in Week Two by posting strong weekends against quality competition:

After opening the season with back-to-back losses to Cal Poly and Vanderbilt, the Huskies knocked off Michigan in Arizona last week, then switched coasts and took two of three from the ninth-ranked Wolverines in Florida.<<

So, as is often the case we have been pretty strong against the strong. Great wins against Michigan. Will we finally demolish the weak? Is this the year when we win those local (I don't care about the "New England" tag vs teams like Monmouth and Stony Brook) what we are talking about is the local out of conference games. Bus ride games (can we just call it that?). It feels like we always under-perform against those teams.

The last couple of years UConn baseball has done a fine job against New England or local teams. Last season UConn was 10-1 against New England opponents. In 2018, UConn went 9-1-1 (the tie went to a quality Bryant team) against New England teams, and 2-1 in a weekend series against St. John’s, which always has a solid team. The better team doesn’t always win in college baseball, not like it often does in other college sports. UConn baseball fans should be proud of those terrific records for the last couple of years. You have to expect to lose a game or two to the "local" schools no matter how good your team is in college baseball.

It would be ridiculous to say the 9th game of season was a must win, but I do consider it a big win. A record of 4-5 seems so much better then 3 - 6. Krauth has been awesome. And for the most part, so has our relief pitching. We need better starts out of Cody and Joe.

The overall winning percentage of the teams we face over the next 9 games is 26 % (13 -37). Then we start AAC play with 3 vs Cinci which is currently 2-6-1. So I am thinking we need to go 9 -3 minimum. That would get us to 13 - 8, which means a winning % of .619.

That .619% winning percentage buts us just a little above the .617% goal below.

Go Huskies !!!!
