Will Geno get a player from the portal?

Agreed. If Geno is considering Forbes and/or Somfai (and we don’t even know that he is) he’d have to decide if he wants a more polished, but shorter term, player vs one with potential. Me, I’d go with Forbes but I have zero championships and watch games from my couch

Not familiar with how she played within the Marquette system, but 4.9 rebounds a game seems low.

I doubt he’ll approach Forbes, but Somfai seems like a natural given that he recruited her last year. One caveat: he has occasionally expressed a preference for players who have satisfied their commitment to their prior school, ie graduated. There have been exceptions — Evina for example — but in the main this seems to have been his practice.

At Stanford, in the game I was able to watch, Lara seemed more of a 4 than a 5 while Eschmeyer seemed like the main 5. This distinction may not matter all that much though.

That's kind of my caveat with her. In watching her games against UCONN, it seemed to me that, although being big and talented, she really likes to hang out and shoot from the outside predominantly. To this point, she hasn't seemed to be any sort of banger inside.

Somfai might indeed be more of a 4 than 5, but she didn't seem to shy away from physicality.

the real question is how will Geno's behavior on Friday affect recruiting?

If true that Geno prefers 4th or 5th year seniors, then this is a message to HS players that he will not over recruit on them. It speaks to the integrity of the program as a whole. Dorka, Lou, and Kaitlyn all fit this role.

Wait a minute. How do we explain Kayleigh if Geno is only looking for graduate transfers?

oops - you got me there, but I think it was his fear of not having enough guards, and no one anticipating Ice getting injured and out fr the year.

Because this is a thread for looking at players in the transfer portal
How do you not consider players on hand who might fill a need rather than using the transfer portal? If Ice could do the job, why look for outside help? It's a legitimate point. AND Ice was highly regarded when she came to UConn and showed flashes of quality when healthy.
PS/I read that Crooks wants at least $5mil to transfer. Expensive Audi.

We could use shooting or a bail out offensive player. I don’t think there is a particular position UConn should go for; but if there is a clear and obvious upgrade that becomes available… UConn should take a look at it.

If Auriemma had impact players on hand he wouldn’t have a need. He would’ve already been using them and that includes Brady before she got hurt again. But he doesn’t and that’s why he’s been playing small ball so much. As for Crooks, do you have a link for those $5M demands? If true she’ll be staying at ISU.

We need a big that can score and compliment Jana. Someone who goes up strong and can take being double-teamed. I do not know who that would be. Footwork is important too.
UConn needs a big who can score and rebound.

On the other hand, we are not privy to what the staff assesses with regard to impact within players like Kelis, Morgan or Gandy going forward. We can only speculate (which is what the Boneyard does)...

IMO, we need a big who's athletic and can defend and get rebounds against the likes of SC. Scoring is secondary.
UCLA had players who could defend and get rebounds, and their players are not as athletic as SC. UConn was not as athletic last season and yet they beat SC twice. UConn needs a player who can play the game the way the coaching staff wants them to. I believe athleticism is overrated, although athleticism does help. Whoever they get I hope they help the team win.

I don't care if we run it back, just get an athletic 2/3 guard who can score and defend, mostly defend. Because USC will have scorers everywhere. We need better defenders and better athleticism the most in my opinion. I think they will be our biggest obstacle the next few years. I actually don't think as of right now, we have enough to contend with them in the final four next year. Our frontcourt is A+, it will be our guards that will not be enough when it counts. Sometimes will be an awesome addition as well. Actually I like KK and Kayleigh as a combo at the point too, with KK advancing her shot and scoring. Its that 2/3 where we'll need scoring and a stud defender. Blanca is a stud at the 3, but her feet aren't fast enough for the elite 3's like Makeer and Davidson. I would get 6'0" ish athletic 2 guard to defend players like them.

I think our biggest need will be rebounding. Can't leave it all up to Sarah.
More efficient low post scoring. 55% shooting from 3 feet is really not good.
Guards who can rebound also. We missed Paige's scoring but she was a very good rebounder.
Also, we can see how 3 point shooting comes and goes. It would be nice to guards that can finish at the rim with their dominant hand. Finish or get fouled. Our guards really were just fair in the lane.

.-.
How about a player from the Big 10
Nation-leading 72.48% FG
Gracie Merkle (6'6, C, Penn State): 19.2 PPG | 8.2 RPG
I think UConn's traditional post role is set........they might consider signing a traditional power forward who can rebound, play solid defense and contribute something on offense....
