Just thinking about this season; BYU and ND would have easily taken 2 of those slots. Then they have their pick of Vandy, Texas and Utah for the final 2. Whoever didn't get that final slot would be the team the media talked about as being snubbed. I doubt even with a 12-0 record this year and a 16 team playoff we would have gotten serious consideration.

It is what it is. Just keep winning and change the perception over time.

You might sadly be right, but I feel like the CFP would have put a 12-0 UConn over Utah, even if we were #16 and just awaiting an ass-beating at Indiana. Vandy and Texas, idk, SEC bias would be strong...

What they should have done was added a provision where they could select a significantly higher ranked school over the conference champion (Miami over Duke) if there were a ranked non-champion but no ranked champion.

As it pertains to us, I'm curious as to the exact language that gives ND a bid for a top 12 finish. I'm pretty much convinced that at the moment we would need to clearly demonstrate that we have top five team to get enough support to be ranked in their top ten, and then it may take the correct circumstances from other non-champion P-4 schools for us to get a bid.

Does this mean that if ND is #12 and a G6 team is a lower ranked team that ND gets in over the #11 team. That doesn't seem like it will go over well if it actually happens.

That's exactly what it means. If ND finishes in the top 12 (CFP's, not AP or any other ranking) they're in.

Yeah, I imagine this will lead to quite a bit of animosity.

The way he's become in thrall to Steve Balmer these days leads me to think the "supposedly" is unnecessary.
 
Indiana winning is definitely good for us, I believe there will be a good trickle down effect for us. We are a ways away from Indiana but we are closer to them than people think. Skyler Bell almost went to Indiana, and Indiana just got out strength coach just days after winning the national championship, well stolen from CSU.

I’ll say this for whatever it’s worth. The teams that played in the NC were at that moment the two best teams in college football and one one snuck in. The more the influence and gaming of the system by media whores for the SEC and B1G are muted through more team participation in the playoffs, the better it is for the game. Indiana winning was perfect because it was a historically weak B1G program, so the powerbrokers couldn’t complain. Miami shutdown the ND entitlement mentality that is pervasive there but also in the SEC. It also boosted the ACC. Seeing the Ducks annihilated was perfect payback by the B1G buying trophy programs. The more the entrenched establishment takes a beating, the better. Go UConn!
 
I have little faith in our ever being included in the P2-4. If this should this be our fate, forever wandering the Independent galaxy like the Silver Surfer, is it going to be enough to continue to field a competitive, watchable supportable Football Team and program? The biggest uncontrollable variable is scheduling. Many have noted how much more palatable our Independent schedule is than our AAC schedule was. Are we going to be prevented from scheduling P32-4 teams in the future?(ACC, B12, BIG, SEC)

Yes, our Indy schedule is way more palatable than the AAC. AD Dave has done a great job scheduling. I can only speculate he is killing time for us until we hopefully upgrade to a conference like the B12, ACC.

I don’t think we get in to a P2-4 conference. My question, concern, fear is that we will be denied the ability to schedule teams from the P2-4 and what does that do to the viability of our program.
 
If FBS as we know it becomes P2, we will end up playing in a middle tier between the P2 and FCS.

If the P4 model holds, I do think we will find our way out the desert eventually. How successful we can be in a P4 context is an open question.

An ESPN analyst said the committee wants a couple of years more data / fallout from the 12 team format before they go to 16 teams. Iron out the bugs.
 
I think we need 3 things to be a Indiana (restating a lot of what has been posted already)

  1. We need to continue to win and be relevant. Without that the next two points are irrelevant.
  2. We have to be in a P4 conference. Without that we will never get a ticket to the party. Not saying we cannot be successful, the last few years are proof of that.
  3. We need at least 1 big time donor. Donations will be a struggle (especially in down years) unless you have someone (or someone's?) that can fund NIL to a level allows us to be competitive consistently.


(on a side note Trisha Bailey is just a fantastic sponsor/ambassador for UConn no question)
 
So this might open the CFP door a little bit for us... The G6 representative no longer needs to be a conference champion, just the highest ranked G6 team gets in. The story doesn't mention us directly, but maybe this would lead to a 12-0 UConn getting in during a year with worse G6 champs than this past season.

Well no conference to win for starters and that’s all that really matters
 
I didn't want to make a new thread and thought to put this here. I came across a graphic that plotted how teams did relative to their talent. Not surprisingly, we skewed in the "did more with less" category, above a few ACC teams that "did less with more". You'll note towards the middle that Toledo is present. Given we've acquired many of Toledo's staff and players, coupled with other P4 and G6 signings, I hope we can keep the trend of moving up and to the right.

So that graphic has me looking at ODU -- what a season they had. 3 losses:

@ Indiana 27-14
@ JMU 63-27
@Marshall 48-24

Outside of that Marshall loss, they had as perfect a season as can be expected.
