Jerry West definitely deserves credit and may very well qualify as a basketball front office genius. When Kobe came out of HS, it was rare for a wing and especially guards to be successful and that's likely why he was picked #13. The great HS players to make the jump were usually 6'10' or taller and Moses Malone and Kevin Garnett were the prototypes.

They are not remotely the same player. Bowen is 100% front court who protects the rim, but could play at the 3 for stretches like Polley, Edwards is a 2-3 player that is very perimeter oriented. You wouldn't be recruiting Edwards to replace Akok. You would recruit Bowen to replace Akok. If we have backed off in any way it is not because we are recruiting Edwards. We should want both. All these kids have tight relationships with 1 or more of Castle, Karaban, and Clingan. We should have as good a shot as anybody depending on what an individual kid is looking for. Bowen is Akok with a straight line aggressive drive from the perimeter. He's a rim protector but not as good a rim protector as Akok, he is fast and quick to defend perimeter bigs, about the same deep shooter as Akok on 1-3 attempts per game, but Bowen has an aggressive offensive attitude to build on.
