As we all know, UCONN is working on finding their next President. If that President understands what it takes to be successful in football, they will direct admissions to work with football on admitting some athletes that could help the program. For too long, the football program has been hampered in recruiting by the admissions policies of the school. This has translated to on field performance. Herbst wanted to make us a public Ivy school and that only works when you pay like minded schools. Houston, Memphis, et al are not academically like minded.

I love how the school has grown academically(I could never get into UCONN now), but this policy has impacted football more than any other sport. Time to tweak to help the program.

Susan did a lot of good academically for UCONN, but the next president will definitely need an overall understanding of what goes into being president of a university such as UCONN. I think there needs to be a balance between athletics, academics and fund raising. The next president 100% needs to know and be able.to handle to to continue the improvement we see at UCONN

If the new president is half as athletics-focused as Susan we'll be lucky.
Specifically laser-locked on Susan Herbst athletics' contacts, knowledge, and management oversight, which direct facts support your suggestion in general and particularly with regard to football @Afroabe224?

I've said this before - some poor decisions were made, and we suffered. And she was at the helm, so has to take responsibility. But the narrative that she wasn't interested, or didn't care, or doesn't understand is absurd.

Can’t wait to see the reaction when someone with even less background/interest in football than Herbst is hired.

And then of course we will have 50 people here that don't have access to the new president but will make stuff up about what he or she thinks.

I don’t recall off the top of my head how a a new President is selected... BoT I imagine?

Do they get how critical this hire is?

That was bound to happen. Can't blame her for that. It was way out of hand.
There were better ways to handle it. They laid down the hammer. She never fought for students at UConn, no matter what it was about. I'm glad she's gone.

Disagree on the “doesn’t understand”. I think she had no clue when it came to Big Time football and what it requires.

I meant the “doesn’t understand the importance” argument we have heard here ad nauseum. I don’t think that’s true.

To your point I think she figured the people she hired would handle it. And they didn’t.

I suspect it won’t be but wish it was a top 5 criteria in hiring the new President. An understanding of P5 level football and how to achieve it.

Susan tried to be too "flashy" in her football hires. That backfired.
You think so? Dandy Bob was flashy but RE and PP weren't, although I cannot remember if PP came on her watch.

I am more interested in why she was pushed out, actually. If we knew that we would have a clue about the BoT thinking on what is needed.

Nothing more than my guess but, I think based on the upcoming budget crunch they wanted someone who is capable of overseeing and managing the likely cuts that are coming.

She wasn't pushed out. She had a great rapport with Malloy, thought the Republican would win and didn't get the same warm and fuzzies. She knew she couldn't spend like she did the first few years. After 7 years or so, she decided it was time to move on.

I know that when she hired Warde, she thought she had the 'rock star" that would handle athletics. She was forced to learn about them and their importance early as Warde wasn't what she had bought. Susan loves what athletics does for the university. Warde hired Diaco- she went along with it. Diaco was all show - the women's events, the hair, the slick wording. It isn't the President's job to manage the football coach. Personally, she did not know about football programs(in her defense, most Presidents don't need to know). Whomever comes in next doesn't need to know the inner workings of a football program, but do need to make sure they give the AD and football coach the leeway to make it successful.

Unfortunately, it was a big miss when Louisville was able to jump us to gain entry into the ACC & history now shows the head coach hires were more than lacking. I've been on-campus for 30 years now; athletically Harry Hartley was the President that most supported athletics; I sort of wish the conference realignment stuff would have happen while he was here. As mentioned above, SH was not pushed out. She had said when she addressed the faculty/staff when she arrived that she thought that when "things lined up", she would make a decision on her tenure here. New BOT Chairperson, new Governor....things lined up. The expectation on campus is that a new President will be in place sometime this summer. With a search firm running the search, it has been really quiet on-campus regarding the search. One of the only things that came out a while ago was that recruiter working for the search firm receives a 6 figure bonus if the candidate they identify is selected & accepts the position; nothing about candidate pool or interest has leaked out.
