Josh Brolin. Not exactly a dead wringer, but with the right hair do they could kinda make him look like Geno, and he's a fantastic actor. He did a dead on impersonation of Tommy Lee Jones in Men In Black III, I think he could pull off playing Geno as well.
De Niro is now too old and way too tired. But the De Niro of 15 years ago or so, when he was doing Analyze This and Meet the Won't Print films would have be perfect.
But since he can't, let's make it funny and very intense:
Ray Liotta plays Geno. The only other actor I can think of who could pull it off is Denis Leary, but he's not Italian. Both of them could epitomize his brash, Philly wise guy personna. Copying the hair would be critical, and the ubiquitous running of his fingers through the hair would have to be nailed down by any actor in the role.
Geno is 5-10 at best. He makes Lobo remove her heels to interview him, and she still towers over him. Pacino would have to wear lifts, which he probably does anyway. I think Burt Reynolds is also about 5-7. I saw him up close in person once. The man is really short.
Hoosier Daddy? Why, Gene Hackman of course. Aside from his height (6'2") and age (88), he'd be perfect. He's already mastered the acerbic basketball coach and He has 3/4 of the name down pat.
