If it isn't Cummings it begs the question, why leave CMU for Uconn OC spot if you won't be calling plays? Pay day?

That is totally bizarre...and the sign language reference, WTF is that? I read that and the Twilight Zone theme entered my head. He's either a mad genius or just mad. There's no apparent gray area with HCBD. I hope he's not in over his head. Here's the analogy as I see it - when college players go to the NFL they often talk about the speed of the game being overwhelming but that over time the game slows down for them. It seems like the head coach game is too fast right now but I hope it slows down for him quickly

I'd say being DC at Notre Dame is totally faster speed than HC at Uconn.

I disagree. A DC pretty much doesn't need to know jack about 50% of the gameplan, opponent's personnel etc. on any given Saturday. This alone is enough to overwhelm many of the coaches that can never make the transition from successful coordinator to successful head coach.

Methinks he's talking about the backup QBs (or whoever they have on the sideline) relaying hand signals in to the QB on the field. I've seen some teams employ up to 3 or 4 decoy signalers from the sidelines. Cincinnati's offense, for example, usually had every single QB plus a few position coaches shooting out random hand signals under Brian Kelly/Butch Jones. I get a good view of this from my seats near the visitor's sideline.

Someone please tell me that I fell asleep and woke up on April 1. These quotes have to be Dez's idea of a April fools day joke. If not I pray that when BD's OJT period ends we find he is a much better coach than he is a communicator.

That sounds ridiculous. How do you come up with a game plan without the 50% of a game plan and opponents personnel. For that STFU.

The D C has no input on the offensive game plan.

Head coach is CEO and is responsible for the success and failure on both sides. A coordinator is a division head and is only responsible for his side of the ball. Diaco has never been responsible for everything including, it appears, the all important job of running the copier and approving hand written letters to recruits.

And after this story, for my own sanity, I am going stop trying to figure out what in the hell Diaco is saying.

You're wrong.

FWIW I couldn't care less who is calling the plays.

B. Have to disagree. A D coordinator has roughly 35% of the responsibiltiies of a head coach. Beyond game planning, there are the media and donor commitments, the time with the AD, the time with the direct reports, the time with recruiting etc. Great coordinators often don't translate to the great head coaches as a result of the time commitments

Everyone harps on the AAC compared to who ND plays. Two totally different levels. Especially now. There is a reason a HC has coordinators to help with other areas. Look at the average opponent both clubs play year in and year out. He has been around some good HC's. He knows how to get it done. OF and DF are 50% of the game plan.

I honestly have no idea what you just said . Sorry. Here's what I know. If these quotes continue from HCBD, Warde will be removing the sharp knives from the Burton/Schenkman soon

I kind of care - otherwise how do we evaluate decisions and know who to complain about or heaven forbid, compliment? Wasn't there already a Fire Cummings thread on this board earlier this week? Based on the article, I'd say Cummings didn't make the decision that people want him to be fired for.

The 50% of the game plan and personnel I was referring to were your own team's offensive game plan and the other team's defensive personnel.

Not sure if that was a shot at me or not. Armchair QB perhaps? But you know what. I'm as vested in the success of this program as everyone else on here. 13 year season ticket holder blah blah blah. Called out the Pasqualoni shiitte early and wished I was wrong. On board with HCBD's energy but some of his in game decisions and quotes are downright bat shitte crazy. Could I do better? No way. But does something feel amiss. Absolutely. Hope I'm wrong.

Then no point in responding. You didn't even respond with anything that has to do with relevant on field football activity.

Ok. Not sure what "relevant on field activity" has to do with any of this thread but will respectfully agree to disagree. No need for message board pissing matches. We both want a successful team. LEt's leave it at that

I haven't liked Cummings since day 1 because he is a dead ringer for Dan Malloy.

Parsing these quotes from the article

"Each decision is made on a daily and continuous basis,"

"The game plan is built by Mike Cummings and his staff all week so the offense goes to the game with a scripted plan then everyone has jobs to execute that plan,"

"For example, you're doing a speech and standing next to you is a sign language specialist. Is the sign language specialist doing the speech or are you doing the speech?
"Mike Cummings details out the game plan for the day and then he's giving jobs to his staff to accentuate assets and limit liabilities."

Patterson followed Cummings' plan, which wound up being altered by Diaco to scrap the passing game because of a combination of issues including weather conditions, field position, pass protection problems and simply not be able to execute because of penalties.
But Cummings maintains control of the offense.
"He's a manager of a unit and the way we present that is that there are certain jobs that need to be done and he organizes and coordinates assets and liabilities to decide who should do the jobs," Diaco said. "From drawing cards, to writing scripts, to recruiting hand-written letters to marketing campaigns to video productions to running the copier and everywhere in between, and we also don't feel like any one job is more important than the other as it relates to calling the game."
So why was Cummings on the sideline?
"We need those four quarters of coaching," Diaco said. "We don't want to minimize those four quarters of coaching. We want to maximize those 3 ½ hours to get even more coaching done there. That's why I called him out of the [press] box and had him on the sideline."
"Mike is a demonstrative personality, the coordinator setting the energy and coaching the unit for four quarters ... so I made that change," Diaco said. "Because it's not just last game, it's all season long – the game is pre-called based on what we believe to be the profile and how we want to attack and then we have people in the chain of custody of information during the game. Don Patterson is one of those people. "

I'm sorry but WTF is he saying? Seriously.
