I'm really curious here, as we are losing all of our best players. If Alex returns then perhaps him. By the way if Alex does come back then he will assume all the pressure to lead along with improving his draft position.

If Alex does not return then someone has to have a breakout type season, and I don't know which player that will be.

As of now what is your prediction?

With so many players getting quality minutes for the 1st time it’s not going to shake out until Feb.

Great question. So much talent departed...it's wide open. I see Stewart and McNeeley as the most likely to be "the guy".

.-.
Tough question because Hurley's system isn't built around "the guy." At the start of the season in particular it seemed we had a different leading scorer every game. I would expect to see something similar this year. If I had to pick "the guy" at the end of the season I would say it was probably Donovan, but it's a misnomer for Hurley teams.

By the end of the season I felt as if Stewart was really primed to make a huge sophomore jump and Mahaney should excel in Hurley's system. I guess those two would be my hypothetical picks but on any given day it's going to be about matchups and what closing coach decides to give up what he decides to stop.

Think it’s going to be a different player every game but probably Mahaney leading the way the majority of the time.

Mahaney. Our x'fer guards have consistently been elite
This is my pick.

He's at a position where he can make the biggest impact. He's handled a big role on a good team against frequently high-major competition. Our transfer guards have usually greatly exceeded expectations.

Mahaney

One reason being that I think him being the "best" is best for us. Agree with the Cam comparisons. Seems to have a nice edge to him so far also.

Have alot of faith in the development/potential of Ball, Stewart, Johnson, Reed.

Have alot of faith in Diarra and McNeeleys ability to contribute due to experience and talent respectively

All that faith plus Mahaney being our "Best" player means we are damn good. And yes, I think Alex is gone.

Why?

Jaylin Stewart. He's going to be a star and we'll be in the same waiting pattern with him at this time next year
And Alex said his jump would be huge in Jared’s podcast

Team had a major talent exodus after the "22-'23 championship and did quite well the season after.

how do we want to define best ?
I was asking the same to myself. Who was our best player last season? Newton because he was an All American? I could argue that Clingan and Spencer were just as valuable. Maybe even Castle even though he was the 5th leading scorer. But he usually shut down the opponent's best player, which was invaluable.

Seems the last couple seasons they didn't have one best player. Which is a big reason they won the national championship both times.

Do we really need a “best player”? I think Stewart’s upside is the highest of the returning players. A question for you. Who do you think was our best player last year?

We do for this discussion. :)

with the way playtime was distributed last season, I think all the second unit guys are a lot better than what they've shown and it's just a matter of having playing time. Stewart showed a bit of that practice result but even a no game time guy like Ross reportedly practicing very well, impressing nba scouts in practice and projects as a first round prospect.

Obviously health will play a role. It won't be either of the centers because neither is truly dominant. Stewart looks the most ready to make the jump to leader. But McNeeley and Mahaney will get the chance to take big shots (and a lot of them).

reed's main problem seems to be his hands and finishing touch, but he was a versatile player coming out of high school. can do some face up and perimeter stuff and showed enough passing awareness to be on uconn's radar. he's probably a guy with the widest range of outcomes. if he can improve the turnover % and bring out the face up game he can be a serious match up problem. he is that fast and shifty for his size.
