Who’s winning the portal?

Not sure I'd make a guess until the end of next season. LSU was seen as one of the winners of the portal this past year (Hailey Van Lith, Morrow), and yet, they only made it to the elite 8. USC had five transfers in, notably 3 Ivy grad transfers, and only made it to the E8. In the final four, UConn & Iowa had no transfers in , NCSU had 2, and S Carolina only had one transfer (Paopao).

Two transfers, if you can count JUCO transfer Walker. Are JUCOs an official part of the "portal"??

Overall, I would consider South Carolina the "winner" of the portal season, if my interpretation has any value. To possibly come away from the portal season without a single acquisition, and still be regarded as a front-runner to win it all next season, would make the Gamecocks' portal season a raving success, wouldn't y'all say? I mean, how can you trash it?? If you try to explain the value of a strong portal season for ANY program, and what it would mean for their programs chances next season......

Kamilla was also a transfer

'only the elite 8': Where you finish in the NCAA tourney is not really the only definition of how good you are. Sometimes, you get the right draw and sometimes a key opponent loses early opening the bracket for you.

LSU '23 never had to face South Carolina and won the title with an ok team. LSU '24 at least equal or better, but had a tough draw this time with UCLA and then Iowa in elite 8.

Similarly a surprise team like Creighton or Oregon State making elite 8 is positive, but it's a disaster if you are a favorite to win it all.

I'm with you there. Personally I'm not a fan of the "portal winners" discussions. It's like NFL/NHL/NBA free agent rankings. They're great for water cooler discussions but the results are mixed for the teams in question in the end.
I agree. The way things are going though, we'll soon be talking about a Holiday trade window with trade deadline on Jan 15 to allow mid season swaps just prior to start of 2nd semester.

This argument is fluid but right now USC is killing it with the portal:

Huge.
Adds talent and experience, and USC will need a lot of the latter with all those frosh.
Will also allow the frosh to come along more slowly.

With juju Marshall tvo and Kiki, they’ve likely got 4 starters. One frosh starts, and the rest add depth off the bench.

Furthermore if those 4 start along with their top frosh Laura Williams, that gives them a starting 5 of 5'11, 6'2, 6'2, 6'3, 6'4.

Kiki & TVO were only possible because Bigby and K Williams transferred out. That really is portal mastery.

Looks like USC catapulted themselves to the head of the class! Coach Gottlieb got some players! If they buy in and embrace their roles and minutes on the team, USC is going to be a problem!

USC, UCLA, Oklahoma and Ohio State look like the biggest winners to me. Maryland cleaned up nicely too along with TCU, LSU and Auburn. Also very curious to see Vonleh play at Baylor, she’s one of the better players in the country that doesn’t get talked about enough. And Olsen at Iowa is going to be fun to watch.

Is that what they are basing this off of? I thought it was just incoming players.

edit--if we wanna do "who's losing the portal?" it's gotta be Oregon St. by a landslide
Arkansas’s right there too. Brutal off-season for Neighbors, losing 4 double digit scorers to the portal. Likely will be a bottom dweller in the SEC this upcoming year.

UCLA and Oklahoma should be on here too. Kind of a bummer though to see all of the talent consolidated in the SEC and Big Ten. I hope the ACC and Big 12 can stay relevant in the national picture long term. UCONN too once Geno retires. Having talent spread across the country is good for the sport.

His job is starting to look vulnerable, which is something I never thought I would say about Neighbors. I would probably put him #2 on the most likely fired SEC coach list at the end of next season. With that said, I doubt anyone but Pingeton is fired after next season, though I wouldn't be surprised if there was an out-of-left-field firing of someone like Joni Taylor. Neighbors will probably get one more year to turn it around due to his prior history.

With the 3 recent Portal acquisitions, Notre Dame has to be considered highly

Oregon makes a late charge. Seriously, I was wondering if they'd have enough players when the portal kicked off and they are gonna end up with 15 players on the roster. Last time they had a deep roster, ~2020 with Paopao, Jaz Shelley, Taylor Chavez, Taylor Mikessell, Maddie Scherr, I think Graves kinda struggled with it, although they did make the tournament that year. Seemed like a lot of players were not happy and did not know their role. Paopao had quite a bit of hype, honestly their whole freshman class did, but it seemed like they did not know who their best player was. I don't think they'll have that same problem. Deja is their go-to player. Philli and Amina their clear starters in the front court. It's just the other guard and wing positions there are a lot of options. Here's the lineup that I'd want to see:

Peyton Scott
Deja Kelly
Faith Ehis Etute
Amina Muhammed
Philli Kyei

But I really like their all their players. First five off the bench:

Kate Fisio
Ari Long
Nani Falatea
Salimatou Korouma
Sofia Bell

Notre Dame also made a late push as well. Liatu King and Liza Karlen is nothing to sneeze at. But I kinda feel their biggest acquisition is Olivia Miles and Prosper coming back. So they may be a 1 seed and better next year but I'd feel like its kinda not accurate to say it was the portal class.

Oregon does have a nice collection of talent but that’s been the case for most of the last four or five seasons and Graves has generally fumbled the catch. I think this is his last shot, though. I don’t see how he can survive if Oregon doesn’t make the tournament again. If he can fuse the pieces together they’ll be solid. I really like Muhammed.

Leaving in the portal is a problem, so yes you can win the portal by not having players leave in it.
Sometimes a player leaving in the portal is a net plus. If it is not a player that would be used in a contested game, the available roster spot for a player to be named later, whether in the portal or an extra high school recruit could be worth much more.

That is not as big factor if a team is nowhere close to their roster limit, but if they are, the opportunity cost can be high to have a relatively unused player on the roster.
