Where does Newton rank all-time?

It will be different because he wasn’t home grown in the program.

But man how can you deny the greatness of a repeat champion. He’ll be top 5 for sure. Is he not top 10 already?

At the moment, I second that assessment.

As for racking up assists, Newton has a lot more scoring weapons around him than any PG we've ever had. Last season he had teammates around him that could knock down 3s ( Hawkins, Karaban, Joey Cal) and this season (Karaban, Spencer and some other capable shooters). As for high percentage paint scorers, Sanogo, Cingan, Johnson & Karaban who has been scoring at and near the rim lately.

As for scoring, he keeps on improving both beyond the arc and in the paint. He's looking every bit as good a scorer as the 3 you mentioned (Khalid, Kemba & Shabazz).

Newton is an excellent rebounder and a lot taller that the those 3, though Kemba was an exceptional rebounder for his size. I think Bazz was a solid rebounder, though I don't recall Khalid pulling down many.

Ricky Moore could be in this conversation. He was a hell of a defender, good at attacking the rim, but not a good 3 point shooter. He lost a season due to an injury if I'm not mistaken and had to build his game back up. (Edited, I looked up his stats and he seemed to play a lot of games all four years, but I think he injured his knee at the end of one of his seasons and played little and poorly on a bad knee in an NCAA loss. I think his scoring was impacted after that injury where his scoring numbers went down his Junior and Senior seasons.)

Newton has a chance to be the best all around PG/CG we've ever had.
Ricky’s injury was his shoulder

Statistically, Newton is a monster and his teams are winning by double digits in record setting fashion. He has somehow quietly become a legit contender for best pg in program history. Having a 5th year is certainly a bonus in this regard, however.

Kemba and Bazz are in an elite tier to themselves.

They were the best players on national championship teams.

Tristen is closing in on Khalid.
Not so fast, my friend. Khalid belongs up there with the other two. He got UConn over the hump as a sophomore. Yes he had Rip, but KEA stirred the drink. And he did damage the next year. He beat highly ranked Arizona with Arenas the way Bazz beat Florida. Only his injury late that year killed the dream.

I think the ’who’s the best PG’ argument misses the point a bit. Newton gives this team just exactly what it needs, just as Kemba and Shabazz did for their teams. What I can say is that I personally don’t think he’s done getting triple doubles this year.

I think the basketball gods made their decision when they sent Mcghee through the Garden hardwood

If he wins 2 championships, he, Karaban, and Clingan will be the major pieces from these two.

The only other major contributor to two championships was Shabazz. (Giffey was a role player for one and the 4th best player on another, not quite there).

Among PGs, I think Shabazz gets the nod over Newton, largely by virtue of Newton having been option #3/4 last year and the leader of a balanced team this year, rather than a hero-ball guy who carried the team (which is credit to Hurley for assembling these rosters). It's also a fair question of how Kemba (a 3-year player who also carried his team, vs. Newton as a 2-year guy on fairly balanced teams) compares.
Dont forget....Neils was the key for the 2nd chip.

He continues to get better too. It’s so valuable to have a player with those skills that has seen and done it all out there, and under pressure. Doesn’t mean he will always be perfect but what a great leader.

No need to rank. Tristen is simply the next great one.
Thank you.

No need to rank while the season is in progress.

NO ONE expected Tristen to play this well when he was first picked up off the transfer portal. He fit a new level of wow starting at the Xavier game last January, and he's been consistent ever since. So unselfish. Elite closer.

Enjoy Tristen while it lasts.

At this point in time, what difference does it make?

Arrogant and spoiled, we've had many great point guards who were winning in their own way. I can't pick the top one, not possible. Can't even pretend they're interchangeable, they all blended with their teammates. They all had their own chemistry, and they all pull for each other

Thank you Tristen

and Jalen and Bazz and Kemba and AJ and Marcus and Taleik and Special K and Ricky and Doron and KO and Chris Smith... and everyone else that SPOILED us, making us ARROGANT

He’s the best outlet passer I’ve seen in a UConn uni.
He us very good, but i don’t know if you are old enough to have seen Doron Sheffer or Corny Thompson who as a rebounding big man was a great outlet passer.

Newton is top notch. Best or not is kind of irrelevant. He does have very good players around him, but they certainly need him around to facilitate and i tend to think something good will happen when he has the ball.

Newton is good but Sheffer was better. Again taking nothing away from Newton I love everything about his game but Sheffer could put a 50 ft chest pass on a dime eveytime.

Yep, though to be fair Sheffer was a PG, and Newton isn't (or so we were all told last year).

I don’t rank them I enjoy them. Hes up there though we are very lucky to have Newton back this year, can’t wait to see him paired up with Castle, how about Newton, Cam, and Castle on floor at the same time.

Probably third if we win a second title. Kemba and Shabazz are in their own tier.
Yeah I think Kemba is solidly #1 and nobody is surpassing what he did not only within 2011 but across his 3 years at UConn (solid piece of that 2009 FF team). Buzz was a two-timer, stuck with us through the ban, carried us, and had the quote at the end; so there is special nostalgia in that. And again, both of them were home-grown at UConn

We’ll see what Newton turns into this year. He was very Bazz-like last year with his heart-wrenching threes from DEEP. I think even a solid elite eight run puts him in the top 5 with Marcus and KEA, assuming we are just talking point guards

Not to sidetrack this thread, but i always thought that if 6’5” Sheffer had grown up in the USA, he could’ve been one heck of a quarterback. The arm, vision and yhe accuracy.

Wait, wasn’t there an entire thread last season with multiple pages discussing our lack of a point guard? No one believed me when I suggested we did have one. In just one season my man is being discussed as one of the greatest ever. I love this place
