When Paige Goes Does Geno Go

During the freshman year of Paige, Nika and Aaliyah Geno said that they ( that class) really revitalized the staff. It's possible prior to that time he, atleast in the back of his mind, was considering hanging it up. Nika was quoted at one point, I believe during her sophomore season, responding to a comment that Geno made about considering retiring and spending his time playing golf, that that is not happening because he had promised her that he would be there throughout her UCONN career. I doubt he has made that promise to others in the following classes. As long as any of them (Paige, Nika and Aaliyah) are around I don't see him retiring, In Paige's case that could be as many as three more seasons, Aaliyah and Nika potentially two.

Most assuredly he will continue to recruit and bring in talented players that fit the UCONN mold right up until the end of his career. Whether he is there to shepherd them through their entire careers or he has set the table for his replacement will only be known down the road, but in either case he will not relent in keeping UCONN at the top of wcbb. I agree with others that Geno and CD will go out together. Clearly some class(es) will not graduate with Geno and CD as their coaches, IMO, it will definitely not be Paige, Nika and Aaliyah's.

I doubt it. I believe Geno will have to be physically escorted out of campus. I think he's in it for the long haul with Uconn. It would take something unforeseeable for Geno to retire. That's my humble opinion.

I recall many years ago Dean Smith announced his retirement in Fall 1997 after making the FF during the previous year with a ton of talent coming back. Smith had previously said he wouldn't make his decision when he was tired at the end of a season, but if he didn't feel it when it was time to start major preparations again he would know it was time. That's what happened with him and Guthridge took over for a few years. I truly could see Geno doing the same thing. A few times last year I thought Geno looked tired, which anyone would after the insanity the team lived under last season. I also know he lost his mother and had some health issues.

Just like professional athletes, I don't like to see any coach go on past their time either. There have been many coaches over the years where I couldn't understand why they didn't move into a different role in life but those coaches were usually slipping in on the court results, recruiting and fan support. UConn is still doing very well in all those areas. I think this year will be very telling. A healthy UConn team could win a NC or be there at the end of the tournament and give him another wind.

This kind of idle speculation is wasteful and awful distraction.
Until the first tip-off in November, we can use all the speculations & distractions we can get.
Awful & otherwise

As long as Geno enjoys the kids and his teams are playing the way he wants them too, he will continue to coach, health permitting.

I doubt Geno cares about that stuff. He'll be 70 this season, and you don't want to end up in a Boeheim situation.

70 isn't old if you stay active.

.-.
NO! The only way Geno retires is when he passes Tara Van Devere in wins. He has a much better win percentage than Tara, but not the most wins in BB history. That's my take. GO GENO!!! GO HUSKIES!!!! Actually, I hope he never retires while I am alive and in 11 days I will be 90!
I don’t think Geno gives a flip about that record. Only fans care about that record. He knows that he is the greatest of all time but every analysis except that one.

He cares about championships - and nobody is close. His legacy is already established.

I think it depends. If UConn wins a couple of NC's with Buecker, then he might decide to go when she goes.
I think he wants to get through a single season with his entire team healthy. He needs that to win a championship. and we already know: that ain't happening this year.

Have no idea if the total wins record means anything special to Geno and doubt he would even discuss it. That said the numbers are that he will enter the 23/24 season 6 wins behind Tara. Even with an undefeated UConn season how many losses would one reasonably place on the Stanford team? I checked and in the last 10 seasons Stanford has lost 6 or more games 6 times including 10 (14/15) 8 (15/16) and 11 (17/18). Anyone have some thoughts or aware of early projections for this season for Stanford? Just wondering.

Unfortunately, the way things are going he might be 103 before he has an entirely healthy team.

Dont mean to nitpick but he’ll be 69 for 99% of the upcoming season. Is he saying he’s leaving when Paige does, to recruits? Not so sure I like this thread.

Boeheim plus 10 championships
Oh well, 10 1/2 because Beoheim's championship has an asterisk next to it.

Here's the thing, Geno and Tara are close enough in win totals that which ever of them coaches longer will have that record. It's worth noting that Tara took many more seasons to accumulate her win total.

I don't think Geno cares much about records right now. He often says the time to reflect upon your successes is after you are done. I think his thought process is much more involved in preparing for the current season.

That he doesn't have a healthy team or they won't win a championship?

Both. I believe they needed what Jana was expected to add to the team to win it all. And, surely, Paige or someone will get injured again. Edwards is Edwards, but she is not enough. And Ice Brady is not tall and long. Don't misread me, I think the team ( if the rest remain healthy - good luck with this dream ) ) will be very good. Final Four good. But I don't think they can beat LSU without Jana adding valuable minutes. Mostly, I am thoroughly demoralized already. I really wanted to see Jana play. And now all we shall hear about is her 10 month recovery.

Just WOW........ That's it, That's all I got

They may not be completely healthy but they will still win a championship if the keep the rest together.

Jana was going to be a role player this year either way. She has skills but to think she was going to be the heart and soul of this years team is foolish. If they have Paige, Azzi and Edwards healthy they are better than any other team in the country. You add the defense of Nika and the rest of the cast and you have maybe one of the best UCONN teams ever.

Geno will hang it up when he feels like he has nothing left to offer and his health is good. As many have posted he has zero left to prove and his legacy is solid regardless of what he does from here on out. From a succession point of view I would like to see CD take the team over for a couple of years to soften the loss of Geno on the sideline. No other coach will be able to handle the expectations after Geno and having another person have success will really help whoever the long term solution happens to be.

Right. Same thing happened to Paige. She was only a freshman. You'd have to have been foolish to think she'd would have garnered all the national awards. Wrong! Breanna was recognized while in HS that she was very special and would develop to a superstar. Jana had the stuff, Geno admitted she was highly skilled. The sky was the limit and that was snuffed out by her injury. To say it was mere bloviation that Jana could not achieve a level of greatness her first year is pure bunko. As a high schooler I was headed for basketball immortality until my lack of talent showed through. I was exposed as a charlatan and that was the end of my dreams. Jana has the stuff and we'll see next year if I'm correct.

Thats's a thing hard to discuss, I think Geno and Chris Dailey will retire at the same time - It will be a hard time, a revival - but I don't think this will happen before Azzi being drafted
